TMOS Reviews Thread - Non Spoiler Review and Discussion - Part 7

Whoa whoa whoaaaaaaa WHOA now! Ok, where the H, E double hockey sticks did these bad reviews come from?!? :( :( :(

Sweet geebus this sucks...and I mean bigtime!

I mean, obviously I'm not going to let other people tell me whats what with a movie (I've seen movies that people said sucked but I loved) but something is happening that I feared. Now I first heard of this reboot and I was kind of excited but not all THAT excited because I was so disappointed with Returns I didn't want to get my hopes up.

I saw the 1st trailer, and I was like "Oh, great...fantastic. We get Superman..with a beard...in a lumberjack shirt...crab fishing in Nova Scotia".

Time went on, days, weeks, months...and bam. The 2nd trailer hit. I was blown away. I was even more blown away with every single tv spot, featurette and piece of footage I've seen. The score by Hans Zimmer is absolutely breathtaking, beautiful and original, it's full of energy and power to me.

Now? There is a chance this movie could ****ing blow. It's not like people are saying "Yeah it was cool, but it wasn't mind blowing" or "I really enjoyed it, but it could have been better blah blah blah" but saying "It sucks" :(

I'm kinda bummed and you know what? I was just joking around with a friend of mine saying that "You know what? I think I'm just going to stick with trailers and tv spots man in case this movie blows."

I umm...I actually think this maaay be something I will actually do.

Wow...I feel like the reviews and receptions from both critics and fans are so polarizing that I don't even know what to expect when I see it this weekend.

ITA. One minute I'm reading a rave and the next minute it's the exact opposite. I am still really excited to see it.

I thought it was great. Maybe my favorite Superhero film, and definitely one of my favorite films in general. Right up their with Batman Begins and The Dark Knight for me.
Lol. Quite the opposite reactions I assumed you and Anjow would have.

Critics (for familiar characters): It's good, why change it?
Critics (for movies in general): Why not be more original?

I tell you what guys, I'm hyped and will be seeing this a 3rd time. It's a huge hit with the audience and captures the essence of what the man behind the "S" is all about. I'm getting Facebook messages LEFT AND RIGHT from my friends (non-believers) who are eating crow and loved the film, putting it up there with the Avengers and TDKTrilogy.

I must admit, the movie moves into a direction I never viewed or pictured it from the trailers and personally, that's a GREAT thing. Loved it.

I'm posting my Facebook status I just put up since I'll be writing a full spoiler review tomorrow:

Just got home from my SECOND viewing of Man Of Steel in one night and whoever has already seen it once, I urge you to go see it for a second time to soak in the imaginative and creative genius of this re-imagining of the Superman-mythos. The new wrinkles work and you simply can NOT appreciate the deepness of this movie unless you see it more than once. I have already seen it TWICE and plan on going a few more times. It's that good. Henry Cavill not only embodies the comic-book essence of Superman, but he BECOMES the man behind the "S". One helluva performance by our lead man. Amazing. 9/10 (room for a sequel.) Don't get me started on the action or CGI aspects. Words don't do it justice. Go see Man Of Steel and "Join him in the sun."

Again, not what I expected, but for the second viewing overall when you get a better understanding of an outstanding story and wrinkle to the mythos, the pacing isn't even an issue any longer. I love and apprecite this film. BALLSY baby! Ballsy.:word:

Not only is it on par with IM (and better than Avengers if you did Superman mythology), but if you are a fan of TAS you are going to be completely blown away by Cavill as Superman.

So would it be safe to say that as a fan of STAS/JL/JLU and the related DCAU films, I'll love MOS? If so, awesome!

Although I grew up with Chris Reeve as Supes (and concede that he was awesome), my favorite versions of the character have all been in animated form. :)

If you are a Superman fan, and mostly into the modern comics as well as TAS I am quite sure you will enjoy MOS.

Just saw it...I think its very good, Snyder made a film for the fans. The comic book fans. Also, the general public will love it.

I can see why this is a mixed bag with the critics...Without spoiling anything:
  • I think the film delivers in its Superman, Henry Cavill
  • The story is very good...Its a unique origins story that I can totally envision seeing as contemporary. It works
  • The action scenes are unbelievable...Not cheesy either, just so epic in scope.
  • The chick playing Faora is so sexy in her scenes
  • Cast was great and just a real epic Superman film
  • Pa & Ma Kent were great

The things that I think that were needed:
I think the pace is very frantic...Things happen so fast in the plot that it seems Snyder followed a storyboard directly. There needed to be some calming down scenes, but I can see why they went with this "OH ****, world is about to go to hell we need HELP ASAP". The film needed another 15 minutes to balance out the pacing and transitioning, include some more conversation scenes.

I think its a bit gruesome in parts, but young boys are going to fall in love with this superhero film...I think now that they got through Man of Steel...They can flesh out these characters in a sequel for sure.

Def. am hoping for a Director's Cut if there is one...Snyder does usually have these, I think it would really benefit it.

Overall, I am happy and ecstatic that Superman was done right! Will probably go see it tomorrow with the gf now

8/10

So would it be safe to say that as a fan of STAS/JL/JLU, I'll love MOS? If so, awesome!

Yes. I have every season of all of those on DVD btw. I actually think that is the type of fan MOS will attract the most from Superman junkies. I could see where traditionalists and Reeve/Donner fans will be thrown for a loop.

I think someone said, it's all about expectations...

MOS may have the craziest expectations of all movies of all time... for 2 reasons:

1. It's Superman
2. The way the marketed it, like it was to be the perfect CBM movie of all time...

So, the slightest imperfection would turn it from a fresh to a rotten.. I think most critics would be more forgiving if it were not for the 'expectations'.. because most GA enjoyed it...

Take transformers... Although it makes tons of money, but people don't go around calling each other to 'watch it'.. they just watch it, because it's an OK summer blockbuster with tons of action.. but so far, with MOS, the people who liked it, seems to be crazy over it... So, I don't think it's as bad as the critics made it out to be.. at least it can't possibly get 'failing marks'...
i tend to agree with u.

just like it is a superman film, it must make 1B!!! any less is a failure. hehe :D

Critics are getting overly critical nowadays...

For the record? I actually loved Hangover III. If the movie makes me laugh? It being a..you know...a comedy? Then well **** it, it succeeded.

Man I really hope this movie is everything I hope it is. You obviously can't have too high expectations but sometimes? Sometimes if the g-damn studios gussy up the trailer and make you cream your pants in anticipation you'd hope they actually deliver! I guess that's Hollywood for ya...

What my friend (a non-Super-fan) posted to me. He's not the best at grammar or sense of punctuation, so bare with him! Lmao....

I must admit thats supes lived up to the hype. The cgi was amazing. In terms of super hero movies i put it right up there with the avengers and the batman series. I also put it on the same level as ironman 3 in my terms of my enjoyment (i know a lot of people would disagree but i love RDJ as tony stark). If you have ever talked to me about superheros then you know that i loved ironman 3 and the avengers and the batman movie. Finally dc put out a movie to start there justice league film series. I really enjoyed it. I still aint the biggest fan of supes. I still dont think he is the ultimate super hero ever. That goes to silver surfer but i must admit i do have a new level of respect for him. that movie wasnt the kid friendly movie of the 70s/80s whenever Reeves donned the cape. I was shocked at the ending too. I def didnt except that. It was pretty action packed and louis lane was pretty hot in an ordinary way. Like i mean she wasnt a super model but def good looking. It along with ironman 3 is one of the few movies i actually want to go see again. If i do would you want to tag along. I would love to see it with you a true supes fan boy. Also i wish that batman wasnt a stand a lone character. Bale would be badass teamed up with Cavill or however you spell his name. I would like to see a green latern reboot cause i love GL or a Man Hunter movie. I love Man Hunter too. I think them having Nolan looking over everything really helped it out too. Either way now i am excited for a Justice League movie.

In terms of writing, Goyer actually did a decent job with dialogue on this one. I agree that he tried to make the plot ambitiously complex. There could be some confusion on first time viewing in terms of the codex and the gravity weapon. I don't know if that is editing decisions or the script though. However I feel there was enough balance found, that made this a very good origin film and great first effort. A strong 9/10 for me.

Also...what effects house did they use? Because this movie looked like they had to go bargain-basement on quite a bit. The snow and steam/breath was almost comical, and a lot looked standard-fare video game. Not one of the better showcases out there.

HAHA... I know you're trying to be sarcastic..

But you're right, many fans thought it either made 1B or is a failure..

I predicted 1B based on my own internal metrics (mostly guesswork, based on hype, it's superman, tons of action, internaionally recognizable character, etc)... that's why i stuck with my 1B prediction even though the critics didn't like it.. For me, it would have been a success if it made 600M (becaue the studios would have made their money back)...

But I sure got into a lot of heat from people who thought that was a ridiculous figure... anyways, right or wrong.. its' all for the fun of it...

By the way, the crowd clapped at the end in my theater

There's always the possibility that critics are just getting sick of seeing comic book movies.

kalmart I thought the special effects were fantastic but maybe you have a more precise eye for such things. I just know it worked for me, and the entire audience clapped at the end. Lots of comments were being made about "most action in a movie ever" from multiple people. Just saying

By the way, the crowd clapped at the end in my theater

Mine as well. Packed too. Midnight showing though not sold out, I'd say 85% full but shown in 3 theaters. Dude next to me was up on the edge of his seat with his mouth open the whole time, lawls.

Ah, what a relief. A truly inspiring Superman film for me personally. I generally do believe the GA will eat it up.

You're right.. I think critics have forgotten the main reason people go to the movies.. 'to escape daily lives and be entertained for a couple hours'.. so, if it's entertaining, the audience would love it.. they don't usually judge it too harsly based on so many 'points that a movie maker should follow'... it's not an exam... it's just 'enjoyable or not'..

For that reason, I loved Fast 6 as well.. it's a no brainer.. you leave all logic behind and just go for the fun ride...

Is a gross amount of action all you guys really needed to like this movie?

My crowd was pretty flat and seemingly pretty bored through a lot of it. Lot of people leaving and coming back. Some claps at the end, but crowds where I am don't really cheer much for movies unless they really are amazing. Comedies get a good reaction.

motown you must have missed my other posts on other aspects. I was commenting on action based on kalmarts comment.
