TMOS Reviews Thread - Non Spoiler Review and Discussion - Part 7

This amount of action simply wouldn't work in any other SH film. For Supes, it does. Also, don't act like there's no emotion to this movie. There clearly is, they just don't spoon-feed you it through a tube. The emotion-side of it was fine for me. I have no issue the way they used flashbacks to tell his story. If you don't like flashbacks that break up the continuity of the story, you may not agree but I saw what they did and it worked on my end.

Agree! A couple flashbacks teared me up a bit, I really felt for this Sups! See, the problem with SR was the story, with MOS the problem is NOT the story in the least, its an amazing story, the problem in MOS is the editing. I feel some scenes could have been added to give it more depth, while others could have been deleted to make room for these scenes.

I just wish the flashbacks kept up, even through-out the fight scenes, that would have kept all thee emotional bild up through-out the first hour flow into the rest of the movie, and it would have kept that connection to the character going through out the film.

For me, the movie went from an awesome batman begins through the first hour, to more Hollywood blockbuster the second hour, cheesier and not mixing aswell as it should due to editing.

Overall yes I have my complaints, but I thought it was a very good movie, just not great. It is however a great start for a sequel to work off of. :)

My friend just posted on facebook how his crowd went absolutely ballistic (in a bad way) because the theater showed a bunch of old trailers in his showing…INCLUDING the Man of Steel trailer itself.

Then when it went dark and the movie started?

…it was Star Trek: Into Darkness. :o

That makes me glad I only had two endure the same trailers twice. What a mess.

Not that it matters to anyone, but I am going to share this. I am at work now in Manhattan, NYC. It's about 4:30am here est. I just got off the phone with a co worker who does my shift on my days off. This guy is not a geek, or fan boy in the slightest, though he has a passion for 80's horror films (to give you an idea of his tastes, he reeeeaaallly hated the EVIL DEAD remake). But I had turned him on to MOS by showing him the trailers and he had been mulling over actually seeing a midnight showing here in NYC. He called me at 2:45am est because he had to rave about it to someone. He said it was a great action film, and a good sci fi super hero movie. His girl, who he took with him rated it a hair bellow AVENGERS. I know for some here the AVENGERS comparison is the kiss of death, but these two are not CBM movie fans, and something with broad appeal is more their cup of tea I think. If so, then this will have legs and will rake it in. Another thing to note is that the weather all day here on the northeast end of the country has been very cold and very rainy. Yet this co worker told me the line was around the block and the theature was packed. So take from all that what you will. I myself will find out Monday. Puddings and tastings people. Puddings and tastings....

You know....fair enough, dude. I disagree with you completely and feel superman deserves soooo much more. But if two super dudes brawling is all you wanted and needed, this is the best movie for you.
so u want melodrama?

what u want exactly?

The movie does have pacing issues and some lack of character development but make no mistake, this movie is about Superman.

Pros: Cavill was spectacular in this role he hasn't gotten enough praise. Costner really surprised me! His performance to me is memorable. Crowe is awesome, Shannon was great, didn't care for Amy Adams I don't know what is with all the praise but that's just my opinion. Diane Lane was good and Faora doesn't have enough screen time for me to care. The action is spectacular, some scenes actually make you weep such as the emotional ending (not the very, very end) but prior to that.

Cons: It seemed the zoom cuts were a bit too much but got better as the film moved along, some of the action/super fights were hard to follow at times like Transformers hard to follow, lack of character development, too many flashbacks I thought, some plot issues, some corny dialogue here and there. I guess it was the way some things were said.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed MoS for a second time, which was better than the first viewing. The action is top notch and felt very real and very intense. Any shot of Superman flying was also intense and at times a little too fast to follow, lol. For a run time like MoS it definitely goes by pretty quick. Many scenes/shots have stuck with me one example is the "My name is General Zod" scene, I had goosebumps and theatre was dead silent. I'd rate it a solid 8.5 out of 10! Not perfect but it is one of those movies I could probably watch repeatedly.

Cannot wait to take family out to see it this weekend for my third viewing!

That's a shame. At least the audio didn't cut in and out during important scenes and action sequences like mine did. The audience began to groan. After that, it stopped but man... It's SO annoying I wanted to get up and tell the projectionist to rewind it. This same problem happened with TDKR, they were supposed to rewind it because there was a technical error instead the idiot fast forwarded through the entire movie on accident supposedly and people went nuts, we were all offered free passes to any movie we wanted as a result :)

Ha, nice! It's slowly clawing its way out of rotten territory.

I didn't read this review, but it made me LOL: Man of Steel suffers from too much Lois Lane just as Iron Man 3 suffered from too much Pepper Potts.

:D

Wasn't Lois supposed to be a prop and as underdeveloped out of all the characters? LOL. Adams was excellent. Love this Lois Lane. She did her part the way it was written very well.
Her interaction with Jor-EL was simply AWESOME.

We really should not have cared one way or the other about the RT score in the first place. Besides it being immaterial to the actual quality of the film the obsession with MOS' fresh rating has brought out all the worst clichés of fanboy/girl excess. "It's a conspiracy against Nolan, and Snyder and CBM's in general!" No it's not. "These old foggy critics are to blinded by love for the criminally overpraised and super cheesey campy Donner/Reeve era film and are unfairly vindictive in their assessment of MOS!" By old foggy you mean somebody in their late 30's early 40's? And you can count Nolan, Raimi,Singer and just about anyone who has made a hit comic book superhero movie in the last 25 years sans possibly Burton and Schumacher, as people with great attachement to S:TM/SII since they have all said they used those films as a touchstone to bring CBMs to life. "This film is going to fail because of the critics and their reviews!" No. It's probably going to make many $100's of millions. C'mon... be honest.... This is really about how we fans can't pull the RT score out for debates and alpha fanboy smack downs, isn't it? And it's also about how even though so many of us present a personality of being put upon iconoclasts awash in a world of mainsteam mediocre entertainment, a lot of us still want the validation of both the critical elite and the wider audience, for some damned reason.

A little disappointed. Really pleased with Cavill and Shannon. Lots of action and we really get to see the power of Supes and how cool flying must be.

But something was missing that I can't quite put my finger on. Maybe too much story caused the movie to have to rush through things too much. I found the action to feel empty...I was not emotionally invested like I would like to be. Maybe Goyer and Nolan should stick to writing Batman stories. They seem to want to "transcend the comic book genre" and that won't work with Superman. He embodies comic books. I would love to see a Superman movie written by Joss Whedon....he loves comic books.

So...6/10 for me. My girlfriend actually hated it. (She loves comic book movies too)

I umm...I actually think this maaay be something I will actually do.

so you listen to the negative reviews? and you wont go...

why dont you listen to the positive reviews and go?

do whatever you want but WOW :woot:
It's not like people are saying "Yeah it was cool, but it wasn't mind blowing" or "I really enjoyed it, but it could have been better blah blah blah" but saying "It sucks"

and yes even most of the negative reviews say "Yeah it was cool, but it wasn't mind blowing" thats why they give a 3/5 or B-. but still choose to give it a rotten, which makes them look like.....

Sure there are some that said it "sucked" but thats the minority.

Most of the people loved it and the general audience LOVED the movie. Just look in the "Crowd report thread" on this forum.

Again, I think the most common rational critique is that there was a 'hollowness' to the movie...like something was missing that kept it from resonating. I share that opinion on it.

Metro (UK's free newspaper given out to all train and bus passengers all across the country) gave it 4/5 :)

just came back from the midnight screening

WOW!!

9/10

i don't get the critics. they complain about lack of humor, emotion, etc. but i felt this movie delivered. the action was insane!

To HOPEFULDREAMER, the biggest MAN OF STEEL booster on the boards I say( CROWE VOICE ) Our hopes and dreams travel with you.

My guess would be that the story is probably too plot heavy and light on characters and other details.

It's what Nolan and Goyer did with Batman. It focused too much on the big picture.

I usually don't say "who cares about the critics write" but this is one of the rare cases that this phrase works well.
They liked SR because it was similar to 1978 movie and they don't like MOS because it is very different from Donner's vision.

Heavy on the info, but light on the immersion. Yeah...TDKR suffered from this as well. It's weird and kind of unique, as it strangely makes the film feel both too long and too short at the same time.
