TMOS Reviews Thread - Non Spoiler Review and Discussion - Part 7

Nice review Tony. I don't think Shannon was miscast, just Zod had next to no dialogue and little complex development. I was expecting a lot more out of the script but didn't get it. As you said Faora was more menacing. Zod had no action or personal triumph to put Superman on the backfoot.

When he did finally fight he got beat up.

I have my problems with the movie but you cant compare Joker to Zod that's a very bad comparison.

Not trying to compare the two characters. I'm just saying they are both wantonly killing innocent people, the Joker because it's fun and it gets a rise out of Batman, Zod for very different reasons, and obviously he's way more powerful than Joker and has the power to wipe out the humans.

My point is that it seems like in Batman they made it even more of a point that he was not an executioner. I understand Superman didn't have much of a choice, but to me it's always been more of a thing that Superman doesn't kill people than Batman.

My mind is set... MOS is the best action flick of all times. It has it's flaw but it was emotional when it needed to and pack all the kick ass stuff i wanted to see Superman do. the GA in my showing love it and were clapping and cheering at the end of the movie... First time seeing this done at the Theater.

I need to own this bad boy on Blue Ray now... lol

Thanks, and you may be right about Shannon. A bad script can be a handcuff to an actor.

I am responding from the mobile version of this site and not sure how to block the spoilers. Sorry to ruin the movie I did think this was the Man of Steel spoilers section. Not sure why they would put a non spoiler thread.

Zod had lots of dialogue and he was developed just fine. If you left the movie not understanding his character then you didn't pay attention well. He was about his own agenda and that was it. He was willing to do whatever it took to make sure he got his way. He explains that in the movie

Kermode is my favourite critic, but he has in the past been fabulously rude about Snyder.

Yes, he's admitted in the past to disliking him. But he did one of his "Kermode Uncut" videos recently where he said he was really looking forward to Man of Steel and was hoping that Snyder surprised him and that he was going to go in with an open mind.

He's a fan of the character so he was hoping for the best.

And his "Zack Snyder" voice does make me chuckle, I must admit. Not as good as his "Danny Dyer" shtick but still:o

Yeah he has a reason I get it, but they could've gone deeper. And you have to admit he never had Superman on the ropes ever.

I've seen Shannon be more menacing in his other works.

Ok, I'm officially staying out off superherohype forums until after I watch MOS because apparently, people are ignoring the part about this being a NON SPOILER thread. I'd point out the offense, but I'm not gonna reveal the spoiler again. Grrr.....

Quick, who wins? General Zod vs. George Mueller/Van Alden

And despite the announcement that Snyder would return for the sequel, that is DEFINITELY subject to change. Same with Goyer.
The low RT score along with good/great box office would be the best combination for me. That means there will be a sequel (which I want) but WB might decide Goyer/Nolan should stick with Batman since Superman is such a different character.

I figured out something that was bothering me. Superman is not the smart character here I remember from the comics. This Superman's solution is to "hit hard...then if that doesn't work, hit harder". I do appreciate the "determination is what makes him a hero" angle and am glad that is a part of a Superman movie, but isn't he supposed to be a genius in the comic who uses his brain to solve problems too?

Part of me is wondering if this isn't setting everything up for a World's Finest or JL movie. In order to make Batman necessary at all you've got to downplay how smart Superman is, right?

I almost think they should have skipped the [BLACKOUT]kiss between Supes and Lois at the end too...reminded me of the one in the Captain America movie between him and Peggy. There really wasn't enough going on between them to make that logical.[/BLACKOUT] Nothing wrong with waiting til the next movie...and in fact that would have been cool in my mind.

Sounds like Spider-Man 1 "With a 2 hour plus running time, you expect plenty of character development, and while Kal-El is developed well enough, his surrounding relationships, especially with Lois Lane are poorly established. The Daily Planet staff, in particular Perry White (Laurence Fishburne), while minor in the bigger scheme of things, is only there as a token gesture and seems utterly pointless."
