TMOS Reviews Thread - Non Spoiler Review and Discussion - Part 7

Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel is The Godfather of superhero movies

Wow. Funny how diverse the reviews for this film are. For a movie currently sitting in rotten then have reviews like this come out.

isn't he known for being a troll? if a movie is crap he'll say it's great, if it's great he says it's crap.

his good review is a bad thing

I see, wasn't familiar with his history. So basically we have critics for a living who troll. Does he get paid for this?

I never knew there were critics that you want them to review the opposite of how you may feel about a movie. Very strange. Any more like him?

Here's the summary at the end of it for those interested:

"I walked out of Man of Steel with profoundly mixed feelings — I loved the fight scenes and all the stuff with Kevin Costner and Diane Lane, but a lot of the rest of the film left me cold. So I went back and saw it again a few days later, to try and get a better read on it. And I walked out of the second screening with... profoundly mixed feelings.

The overwhelming feeling I had after the second viewing of Man of Steel, though, was: We're getting really, really good at making superhero movies. We've had a steep learning curve, and now this genre is absolutely reaching the apex of its potential, in terms of pure craftsmanship. Unfortunately, that also means the genre may be losing some of what made it distinctive and compelling in the first place. This film will probably make a billion dollars, and it kind of deserves to — but it's also going to hasten the inevitable slow death of superhero films."

Well, that's the final nail in the coffin for me.

:funny::funny:

He loved jack and jill

And his grown ups review is simply amazing. He calls it a Renoir-lite. Let me quote it because its brilliant
The mocking personalities are never guileful; the insistence on friendship resembles Leigh’s insight and Renoir’s grace but crossed with
stand-up comic candor. Grown Ups is nicely subtle about mid-life regret and lifelong promise.
Unassuming as it is, Grown Ups’ best moments suggest a humanist work of art.
Goddamn he might be a troll , but he's funny at it.

The only thing that makes sense is that hes a troll. A pseudo-intellectual poseur perhaps, but theres no way he actually believes the **** he writes. No way.

The fact that Armond White likes this movie would be the kiss of death. But today is opposite day, so its all good. ;)

Here it is:

Not a scathing review as it was implied. Glad to hear that the emotion is there. Not everyone is going to love the massive amounts of action. That's down to personal taste really. Maybe too much action for a non-fan but I'm sure I'm going to enjoy, most of it at least.

I actually believe he's only honest when films get mixed reviews ;)

Armond white chooses "rotten" films to be positive towards, it means nothing....ignore him the same way you'd ignore a negative review from him.

doesn't it suggest MOS is rotten?

I hyped Man of Steel for YEARS on my favorite rock-n-roll band website's forum. Here's what one of my buddies had to say in that community:

"Well, I just got home from seeing it... WOW!!! What an incredible movie!!!!!! To me, this is the best Superman film I've seen. The original was great back in the day, but does not stand up to the test of time.

I will say... after watching it in RPX 3-D, I would definitely recommend seeing this in 2-D. The action will make you dizzy as hell and it's distracting. They could not have found anyone better to play this role, and I'm a believer. He IS Superman! Lol!!

This has now taken the title as MY favorite superhero movie. I will definitely be going back and seeing it again with the MRS.
:woot:"

Just got back from MOS and I LOVED it! :atp:

Please everyone do NOT listen to the critics! :cmad: Go see it!

Some thoughts:
-The first half hour is a bloody mess! :csad: This is the only part of the movie where I will concede to the critics. It plays like some sci-fi B-movie only worse. It is unbearably choppy with so many zoom in shots that you can barely tell what is going on. I tell you I was worried, but I knew the movie was supposed to get better and it did. :yay:
-Once Kevin Costner comes on screen the movie settles down and I started enjoying it more as it no longer seemed to be going a mile a minute, but it was still slightly choppy.
-Once Cavill first flies with his Superman suit is when the movie takes off and never looks back. From this point on the movie is simply great. The zoom in shots and choppiness are gone. The second half is really like a completely different movie. It does not even feel like it has the same director.
-The acting is phenomenal with not one weak link in the cast. Even the acting in the beginning was good despite virtually everything else being bad.
-Shannon is awesome and he is not upstaged by Antje Trauer as Faora. She is good, too, but he is the main villain and he gives a great, multi-dimensional performance.
-MOS is a mixture of comic book, science fiction, and traditional movie making. It combines the best of everything. The dialogue may have been a little corny, but I thought it had a great storyline.
-MOS has a heart and you care about the characters. There is emotion and humor, too. So I am not sure many critics even actually saw the same movie. :oldrazz:
-Henry Cavill is better than I could have ever imagined. I knew he had the perfect Superman look, but I was surprised about what a fine actor he is. He is simply a perfect Kal-El/ Clark Kent/Superman in every way. Zack Snyder deserves extra points for picking this guy :awesome:

I am sure I will have more to add in the coming days as I am seeing it again tomorrow. Can't wait!!!

:supes:
