TMOS Reviews Thread - Non Spoiler Review and Discussion - Part 7

^ I'd prefer a WF. But tonally, and thematically MOS NEEDS a true sequel. It can then move from the sequel to WF, with maybe Wonder Woman as an appetizer. Produced by the director of The Man of Tomorrow trilogy.. ;)

WB wants to get on the Avengers money making but they have done a crappy job of setting it up so far so it will be interesting to see what happens in the next couple of years. Whether they choose to setup the other characters with their own films or just toss them into one film and hope for the best but that would be tough to pull off. The only character they could throw in there and have people just accept is Batman. I wonder if they will go as far as including Ryan Reynolds as Green Lantern.

I totally agree with everyone..

GOYER must go... or,

Be shackled by a whole bunch of other writers...

If WB decides to have goyer pen the entire MOS 2, they'll be killing off the franchise...

Glad that those who liked the film admit Goyer was a problem. And while the film wasn't what I'd hoped, I can definitely see why some love it. I hope the film does well, but I don't want Snyder and Goyer around on the next one.

Goyer and Snyder stays. They did a great job. Wanna bring in some help sure.

If they failed at something it was technical. But they did a great job Big Picture wise.

The BEST origin approach would be more linear, MORE drawn out, have more Ma and Pa Kent scenes as well as others of his childhood, have more of a social commentary on paranoia and fear, set up the invasion, AND spend the last fourth on the action, with a nice and thoughtful follow up.

But this sci-fi Krypton-heavy approach is really good too, and allows more stuff to be saved for upcoming movies.

I think Zack needs a stronger editor. MOS had this weird pacing to it. Brisk, but drawn out.

Goyer HAS to go... or at least be outline guy to Jonah Nolan's script... I'd give Snyder one more chance... ONE more chance.

Zack's direction had its flaws as well, but he had his moments - he got good performances from most of his actors, including some effective emotional moments, Krypton was incredibly realized (especially when you compare it to, I dunno, Asgard, which looks like a city made of plastic compared to this), so his costuming/production design/cinematography was on-point, and his action scenes were awesome to watch. So I’d be ok with him staying if they brought on another writer. Especially since I suspect that if they were to bring on another director, he/she would try to emulate his visual style to a degree and what he did with the action here, and frankly, that's a recipe for disaster, imo.

Goyer...can go.

Just got back and I must say that amid the negative critic reviews, my expectations were pretty low. But the movie was great. Cavill was excellent as Supes. The ONLY time I sorta rolled my eyes was when kid Clark was in the closet at school and ma was talking to him. Otherwise I think the story, action, everything was fantastic. 7-8/10 for me.

I actually teared up during that scene ( the only time I was grateful for 3d glasses) . Something about the scene just hit me because I related it to a personal experience.

So u finally watched the movie??? I thought u will only watch it today?

I don't Goyer is going anywhere. They might bring in another writer and credit Goyer with the story.

As far as I'm concerned the problems aren't with the direction, but the editing and sometimes the script, though I like most of the lines.
I'd want Snyder back for MOS2. The man has awesome visuals, spectacular action, and finds a lot of talented unknowns.

I just came from the movie I loved it the only nitpicks are my eyes hurt from the eye straining finale I still loved it though. The Clark Lois romance felt forced, and very unnatural. And how did Clark know to go north where the ship was, that was never explained. I Didn't find the movie dark at all. There were a lot of funny moments, but if you weren't paying attention they flew over your head(pun intended) I give it a solid 8 out of 10

I was quite scared with the Rotten Tomatoes score but now my mind is at ease now when I saw the 8.4/10(beating The Avengers by 0.1!!!) on imdb. More people take that site more seriously.

Earlier this year I've said to my friends, who btw are more into Marvel and the only DC character they're into is of course Batman *sigh*(I'm a balanced person I like all heroes from both Marvel and DC), that Man of Steel looks like the most epic movie of 2013, they shook their heads and disagreed saying *insert reasons why Superman sucks blah blah blah* or "Superman beat Goku, he sucks" etc etc or that his trailers looks so boring. Then as the new trailers came out particularly Trailer 3 where we first hear "Ideal of Hope"(one of my favourite orchestral pieces by Zimmer by far), their jaws dropped and I just grinned.

With those Rotten Tomatoes scores I was afraid that they would be saying "I told you so" in my face again or even worse fear for the Justice League movie's development status, but I guess now my mind can be at ease a bit seeing that imdb gave it a more worthy score. Now all we need now is for it to make enough at the box office.
So IT SEEMS that imdb scores is more correct then RT critic scores, right?
Even audience score on RT has it higher THEN THE CRITIC SCORE.

Fans and the GA are raving about this movie. Lots of positive twitter feedback and metacritic user score is 8.8, imdb is 8.4, and RT user score is 4.2/5. This is truly a movie people are loving and seeing it over and over again
I read that some are saying that score metacritic user score,THE audience score on RT AND IMDB score is more correct then the critics score from RT.
What do you think?

i give credence to both .. plus any other site where i'll find some crowd reactions to get a collective feel on the film

having said that, RT is at 57% .. however the audience reactions on RT sits on 82% right now .. obvious disconnect .. IMDb @ 84% .. again more audience centered .. & again showing the disconnect at this point in time

so my feeling is that MoS was made for catering to the audience .. shocker

Interesting, that's is what i was thinking more so when i saw trailer 4 before the movie came out.

I read THE MAN OF STEEL was going to have more action THEN the AVERAGE superhero movie so far and i had a funny feeling that some critics will not rate it has high because alot of action alone will bring the ratings down for some critics.
Same thing with comedy, critics will bring it down because of the lack of comedy and romance.
BELIEVE me, if man of steel had more comedy and romance and less action the average critic rating would be 4/5 or 4.5/5 instead of 3/5 stars.

When you have the reps from rotten tomatoes saying the score isnt right being 57% and yahoo and business insider saying the negative critics got it wrong, that tells you something. This movie doesnt deserve 57%. The fans numbers tell it all

They've got audience ratings of the first Transformers film at 4.1/5. Go figure.

I don't trust anyone's opinion but my own and maybe I'll corroborate reviews of others once I've watched a film.

Folks like Kermode and Waid have the same opinions as me and to be honest I've never really disagreed with what they have to say.

Though Kermode's irrational hate of Star Wars is a bit disconcerting.

I know,that's what i thought.
I seen the movie three times and plan to see again and no way superman returns is better then man of steel.

Saw it last night again for the second time, liked it even less than the first time. Movie just seems so off. I like the idea and where they were trying to go with it, but the execution sucked...

This is going to sound stupid, but Supes never really saved anyone. I know he saved the city by stopping Zod but I'm talking about catching falling people and whatnot. He caught the guy in the battle at Smallville... Besides the bus thing as a kid and the people in the oil rig he never really has those heroic moments. I'm talking SM2 moments where he's swinging after the train and Doc Ock is throwing people left and right and Spidey saves all of them, plus stops the train. I wanted to see something along those lines.

Also, I didn't think Zod's finale battle with Supes was as long as people are making it out to be. It was cool, but it lost it's magic after the first viewing. Whereas watching the SM2 finale never gets old. It's just so much more heroic.

Man Of Steel Gets An A- CinemaScore

Back when Man Of Steel was getting blasted by many critics, Comicbook.com predicted that the movie would play much better with audiences, and we were right. Man Of Steel has received an A- from viewers on CinemaScore, which is an excellent rating.

While critics seemed to harp on the fact that it wasn’t the Richard Donner version of Superman that they fondly remembered, the general public seemed to be much more accepting of director Zack Snyder’s new take on the Man Of Steel. Many critics had also complained that Man Of Steel had too much action, but audiences tend to actually like lots of action in their, you know, action movies.

Casting also likely played a huge role in the public’s positive response to Man Of Steel. Even the critics that panned Man Of Steel for the most part seemed to acknowledge great performances by Henry Cavill, Kevin Costner, and others. If audiences can relate to the cast and find a movie entertaining, then they will generally score it high.

All the critical bashing might ultimately play to Man Of Steel’s advantage. Viewers who enjoyed the film might feel more inclined to share their enthusiasm about the movie on social media in order to counter all the negativity from critics.

Saw it last night IMAX 3D. Overall opinion is that the film was slightly above average if I'm honest. I really wanted to love the film, my expectations were high, even though having read reviews over the previous few days I was preparing myself for some of the criticism of the movie. However I did go into the screening with a completely open mind.

What I liked. The scenes of Clark as a child getting to grips with his gifts. His interactions with Ma and Pa. My partner was crying during Jonathon's death scene, and I also found that really emotive. I thought Jor El was portrait well and Krypton was extremely well imagined, and came across well in 3D. Henry was fantastic in Superman mode. I also appreciated that we finally saw Superman being "super" on screen, and boy was he super (fast,strong,effect,etc....) I also think ALL the cast did a really strong job.

What I didn't like. Lack of a real Superman score (I do appreciate Han's music was subtle, modern and probably appropriate) but I wanted more, I wanted hairs on the back of my neck moments thanks to the music. I didn't get that. The pacing was completely wrong, the introduction of real world or Earth was poor. Can't believe I'm saying this but wanted more Earth origins, more smallville. There was TOO much action and it was confusing (ala Tranformers) Too loud (ala Tranformers), too many crashes through buildings (ala Transformers) There wasn't enough 'saving the day' moments for me, and I didn't like the introduction of Superman to the world (loved Donner's intro). The Kryptonian ships looked terrible as well. Too much 'alien' things going on throughout the movie (and I appreciate the whole concept of Superman is about an alien). I would have liked a wee Superman montage as well. (however you have to move with the times I suppose.) Dialogue as also really clunky, poorly written IMO.

Also, I can't see a Justice League working with this version of Superman. I think Marvel did an amazing job making The Avengers work, but I can't (for the moment see how Warner/DC can make JL work) Just for the record I'm no Marvel Fanboy.

I just don't think there will be too many real Superman fans leaving Multiplexing around the world fully satisfied after watching MOS. It was good, but man it could have been so much more, I just think Zack tried too hard to create an action packed movie, and forgot about other things while doing it. I would want a new director for any sequel.

7/10
