The Dark Knight Rises Tom Hardy as Bane XVIII

"Capisce" is so passive-aggressive, it makes my blood boil! :o

High on the list of my most disliked words.

Heh, yeah,I despise passive aggressive BS, I find it very common here in the U.S. amongst the younger crowd (speaking as an American raised over seas.) I usually confront passive aggression with active aggression and the subject in question usually wilts like plastic in a furnace. Good times... no, great times!

Anyway...

Hey everyone. I'm new to the forum and saw the discussion of Bane's physique and someone mentioned that he was fat.

He isn't fat, exactly. He has the body of a power lifter (as opposed to a body builder). Power lifters train for, well, power. Power lifters go for brute strength, plain and simple. Hardy's physique is meant to embody not beauty, but pure force. In order to get a six pack, you ultimately have to compromise on strength. You can get a lot stronger by pumping iron and stuffing your face and letting your gut get bigger

Here's two photos of the same guy.

Who would you be more afraid to meet in a dark alley?

ADDENDUM: Apologies if this was mentioned already. This is a continuation of another long thread, I could not read all of it.

i'm really pleased with the route they've decided to take bane. i never thought that i could ever be this interested in a batman rouge other than the joker. i'm truly intrigued to see the final result.

That's the same guy? Which is the more recent photo? He ultimately looks better as a body builder. But I understand the "look" of Bane and why he looks that way.

So banes voice sounds the same as in the heinz field video?

I don't know, but the fact that they're both rednecks scares me even more. :barf:

I think that staying close to the comic book style would be going for the body builder look, but as mentioned the power lifter look is suited to Bane's character to get results.

Since seeing this version of Bane come to light, I've actually started going to the gym myself and will hopefully get as close as possible to the final look when it comes to the Premiere. I'm going 5 days a week and working on mostly upper body (arms, chest, shoulders and back) with the odd class of MMA to tone up everything else. It's making sure I can get the outfit together that's going to prove the real challenge.

I can tell you this much, Bane may not be a 8 foot monster in this movie, but he is massive. He has a presence that hasn't been seen in a Batman movie before.

Tom Hardy is all about presence on screen so I ain't surprised.

He makes Bronson look like a small child when compared to Bane, the concerns about his size and presence will all be gone after people see the prologue.

I'm Bane will at least be as intelligible as Watanabe(sp?) in Inception, and I had no problem understanding what he was communicating, even if I couldn't tell exactly what he was saying. And I'm thinking that it might be cool if talking is a labor for Bane, like he has to focus to be understood or he just sounds like a monster. I kind of like the idea of him huffing and puffing before saying something very important.

Now, in one of the descriptions I read, it said that Bane's men willingly sacrifice their lives, staying behind on the doomed plane while Bane leaves with his hostage. Anybody thinking these guys are his own personal cadre, the League of Shadows, or some combination of the two?

I don't see the Watanabe comparison. Watanabe didn't have a mask over his face for the entire of Inception. Or anything making his dialogue hard to understand.

At the very least, I wouldn't mind Bane being just a mercenary who is hired by the League to take down Gotham and Batman. The League's just using him, but Bane knows this, uses the situation to his advantage and then makes some changes to what the League wants him to do.

It's not about a battle of power but skill.

Hardy is slimmer for a reason, Batman could exploit a bigger guys weakness in their lack of endurance and speed, while someone with a similar body type to batman (and similar training) would prove a bigger challenge, and that is the point of Bane to provide a REAL physical challenge, you can't have that in a plausible manner with someone that with batman's intellect he can easily figure a way to outmaneuver and ultimately beat him.

That's not an actual issue. You skirt any of those problems the same way any all productions do: Hollywood magic and suspension of disbelief. Why do you think most people do not question how clunky and heavy the batsuit is? Because its not readily apparent and it is presented as suitable gear for combat.

Bane being 7 or 8 feet tall would not have suddenly posed a threat to his depiction as a powerful intellect.

I'm gonna take your word for it, because if you can say THAT about him, than he's gonna one hell of a challenge for Bruce. Can't wait, 3 days until the early screening in my city :yay:

Time to stop lurking and get involved. I'm confused about the prologue. I was under the impression that the prologue was set before Bane gets his mask, and that he would receive the injuries in the prologue which lead to him getting it. So why then is there all this talk of not being able to understand what he's saying behind his mask? Why would he have the mask before he gets the injuries?

Irrelevant, there is no solid rule when it comes to Nolan and suspension of disbelief. He approaches some things in a way that require it, and other things that are more grounded and naturalistic. Just because you can point out various elements he has taken liberties with doesn't mean he isn't allowed to approach other things with plausibility. He has obviously gone that route with Bane and I couldn't see any other way he could have made it better (visually) with a more bulked up actor.

Those reports were wrong. According to the prologue he has his mask way before the scene even takes place.

Oh and welcome to the hype. :yay:
