Nolan said the gas keeps the pain just below the threshold so he can function.

''Keeps his pain just below the threshold''

AnneFan beat me to it. :)

There's a rumor that [BLACKOUT]a fire is involved[/BLACKOUT].

Really?!

It would seem more like smoke or something that suffacated him. He doesn't really have any visible damage to his body, that I can see. ANy time I see a gas mask, I think lung problem.

I mean, the dude looks like he's in top peak physical condition.

It doesn't mean that the fire burned him or something. And there are some scars, but the seem more like from being experimenting on. I don't really know.

You mean, aside from the scar going down his neck and the weird marks on his head?

I was wondering that myself!

Plus he has scars on his shoulders and down arms which are not mega obvious from what we have seen, but you can see here for instance

I wonder if that is supposed to be scars, or just the heavy body make up needed to cover up Hardy's tattoos.

He does wear makeup to cover up his arms and chest; but with all the pictures we've seen and the scars we've seen on his head, neck, arms, and going down his back... no, something happened to Bane. Something terrible happened and altered him in a way that he has to wear that mask on his face to survive.

Whatever it is, whether if it's venom like derivative or something that just blocks out his pain, like in "Knightfall" his mask serves purpose: to be support obviously, but a sign of fear and domestic honor across the country to others. No doubt the "Fire Rises" involves his past. I believe Bane shall defeat him and send him across the world to his ungodly prison. The place where he was transformed and finally became recognized; if Bane thinks he is stronger than Batman, it's only PLAUSIBLE to think he'll give him an ironic death and kill him the place where only HE survived.

From what we've seen, Bane likes to be put on a pedestal. :awesome:

A long time ago there was a rumour of a young Ras with the LOS burning a village and out of a pit a child emerges with flames on them, maybe explaining how Bane is bald and needs the mask. Not ready to believe that yet, though. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

I still think there could be Bane flashbacks. Along with my theory of the place that Bane imprisons Bruce was the same prison Bane was imprisoned in at a time. Showing their dual journeys of "rising."

What if Bane's ultimate, unspoken plan is for a real man-to-man confrontation with Bats, to see who is the better warrior?
What if he's such a strategist that he sees his ultimate challenge in Bats, so he wants the "prime of his life" Batman?
That's why he refuses to kill Bats when he has the chance. He sends him to the prison where he himself was kept, knowing it will either completely break Bats, or make him into the best he can be.
When the final confrontation happens, Bane lays there, defeated, looks up at Bats and says, "I had to know", then dies.

Also, I've been wondering, the "You have my permission to die..." line...Who is Bane saying that to?
I know he has just fought Bats, but is he saying it to Batman, or Bruce Wayne?

It could lend more credence to the rumor that one of the persona's will be "dead" at the end of the movie...

Even if Bane cannot feel pain normally, he needs to react lol.

Like, if you broke his leg he may not feel it but he sure can't use it. :p

Not really.
I crushed my foot in an industrial accident, shattering almost every bone in it, and stripping the meat off my big toe, and managed to walk across a 75,000 square foot warehouse to the office, then drove myself to the ER.

Could you take on Batman though?

Not to brag, but quite possibly.
3 years as a varsity wrestler in high school (regional champ my senior year)
3rd degree black in Shotokan Karate
5th degree black in Gracie Jui-Jitsu
3 years of Tae Know Do (I only took it to rehab a torn hamstring)
LEO basic training, and 13 years of covert ops training
So possibly, yeah, I could take Bats, or at least give him a heck of a purple nurple..

That is impressive...still couldn't take on batman though but that's not a slight against you.

Could you imagine if Hardy looked like this?

And his sinewy shoulders.
