Supergirl Tyler Hoechlin IS Superman - Part 1

I think that might have (of course not seen in this episode) that she might have told him stories with this time they have spent together, and that is what he meant. Because before that line he says....
"I didn't realize how nice it was to be around someone like me, just to be with family...." and I know everything there is to know about Krypton from the archives in the fortress, but I really like it when you tell me stories about home, you make it real, so maybe while I'm here, you can tell me some more about my parents."

So, my interpretation of all we know from last season, and these first two episodes....leads me to the opinion that I gave.... :)
That's certainly possible, but not the impression I'm getting from their interactions at all. Yet another reason I'm hoping for more flashbacks this season to fill in the backstory/relationships a little more.

As far as Alex, I don't know....it seemed completely her because she has always laid it all out on the table...and when it comes it COMES.... lol
True, I just felt like Alex usually articulates her arguments in a more mature way than she did there. The dialogue they gave her almost sounded more Kara-esque to me, lol. The argument itself was solid, just the way she said it didn't sound like how she would normally say it to me, if that makes any sense.

I think Karas talk of leaving was a shock...

I think it's awesome that Superman on the small screen is generating such a positive buzz.

If something comes of it, like a spin off, that's great. If not, I hope that Superman is a recurring character on Supergirl. He's done a great job so far.

I know some folks prefer the DCCU version of Superman - and I think Henry Cavill is very good. However, IMO the story and overall characterisation of Superman in B v S didn't give him much to work with.

Henry's actually quite a funny guy, if you see interviews with him - kind of reminds me of a very young Roger Moore (personality wise). I think if given the right story and right interpretation of the character he could be just as good as TH. But for now, I have to say I prefer the lighter take on Superman - I mean he wasn't all laughter and smiles, but he was a lot more fun.

I totally agree with this Matthew Vaughn quote:

“What I said was, Nolan is very good at doing what he did. Batman, and the subject matter of Batman, deserved to be dark," he explained. "But I don’t think Superman should be dark. The clue is in the costume for what it should be like. You should always respect source material, and if you’re going to reinvent it, reinvent in a way that’s done with respect, not just for the sake of doing it… it’s a bad, hard world right now. My job, and I think other directors’ jobs, is to give people two hours of escapism.”

I rate Vaughn very highly, as a maker of great fun, escapist films ( Kick Ass, X-Men first Class, IMO the best X-film, and of course Kingsman ).

And of course he and I are clearly on the same page when it comes to film-making in general (not that I'm a film-maker but I suspect we appreciate the same kind of movies).

“Most of the movies nominated for Oscars put me to sleep. They’re like TV films,” he says. “I’m the sort of filmmaker that grew up in the ‘70s, and I watched ‘Star Wars’ and ‘Indiana Jones,’ and I sat there exhilarated and having the time of my life in the cinema, and I want to continue that tradition.”

But that's just IMO of course.

Oh no doubt. Hell it was a shock to me, haha.

I would like to add that there is a bit about competing with an alien for someone's affections too.

Competition between siblings for their parents' affection sometimes happens especially in the initial days.

And as Alex says in the pilot or LiveWire, after Kara came, it would appear that her role was protecting the newcomer and make her feel at home (as most elder siblings are expected to do even if the newcomer is not an alien) while the Danvers tried to make her feel at home. To top that expectation the newcomer had all these powers. It would have been natural for her to think that she would never reach Kara's level in her parent's eyes.

And then, you have the fact that despite the resentment, Alex ended up loving Kara because Kara is Kara! So, you have guilt on top of resentment because hey you are resenting someone who is such a great person.

And then, Jeremiah dies, and Eliza depends on her more, and she doesn't get to hear any word of support or encouragement. It is all on her.

I think she would have in time, accepted the fact that that is what she is supposed to do; and that Kara would always be first in her mother's eyes. Accepted it because she ends up loving Kara herself. And she decides that she would do her best to protect Kara.

But then, Clark comes and suddenly, it is all about Clark for Kara. And during that loft conversation, Kara even says that Clark makes her feel less alone
and she feels like someone finally gets her. (which suggests sporadic connection with Clark at best).

It must have hurt Alex really badly. And when Kara said that she would move away to be with Clarke it would have been like telling Alex, no matter what she does, she will never be enough for Kara. That Clark will be Kara's family. Add to that what Kara said in Falling and it is not surprising she laid out a case for why she could be enough; why she could be as good as Clark for Kara. Because she is thinking she is losing someone she loves, again, to someone she cannot compete with. Because she thinks that love is something you have to deserve by doing certain things (intentionally or unintentionally, her parents taught her that).

Laying the numerous reasons why she is good is not what she should have done.

Because Kara deciding to go was not about that at all; I think it was about her running away from new boss, Cat going on leave etc..

And also because, while Alex is saying in thoroughly complicated way that "I am good enough to be loved by you." What Kara is hearing is "You have been such a burden on me".

What Alex should have done is tell her I love you and let us figure things out or call her out on that running away thing, but I think Kara saying she is moving away to Metropolis as if Alex didn't matter at all was, as you guys said, a shock.

Just wanted to add this bit of defense to Alex's behavior out here. Don't want everyone to thinks she was just jealous.:csad::huh:

As for her thinking Clark abandoned Kara, I agree with Kelly. From her POV, it must have seemed so to Alex. So, she used that in her scorecard.

I am the regular lurker who signed up just to defend Alex.:gngl:
I am sorry about using the Tyler thread for this but this is where the discussion was happening.:thf:

I'd love to have this as an avvy!! The second one of course...

Watched the first episode the other day. I thought Tyler did a really great job in the role. My only complaints really are aesthetic ones. He doesn't quite look like Superman to me, though he does look pretty good as Clark. Maybe if they gave him the spit curl it would help, I don't know. Of course, acting is more important than the look, so maybe after seeing him play the role a bit more, I could see him as Superman a bit more.

Really though, my main issue is just those damned cape claps. Nothing else about the costume is particularly bad; the belt and the boots look goofy in stills, but I barely noticed them on the show. But man, those clasps... such an eyesore. They look even WORSE from the back, like he has a couple of iron-on patches on the top of his cape. I really, REALLY hope that they get rid of them when they inevitably bring him back.

Yeah those weird clasps seem to have been inspired by Supergirl in Superman: Unbound animated film.

The "S" design too.

92% of voters want a tv spin off for Hoechlin. 8% said they'd rather stick with Cavill.

You know these sorts of polls are virtually meaningless, right? Not only is the sampling nonrepresentative, but there are built in biases (e.g. the demographics of the individuals who visit the site) to take into account. The poll is irrelevant from the outset given that the two versions of Superman pit against each other were not presented on the same playing field. Even Tyler Hoechlin acknowleged in his interview with Empire that the demands of playing a seasoned Superman as a guest supporting character are vastly different than the monomythic arc Cavill is playing.

But isn't that inherent bias kind of work in it's favor as the people who aren't fans of the series and just the GA outside of fandom are kind of irrelevant anyway?

There are more people who watch and care about Superman than those who visit and vote on polls at Digital Spy. I, for example, am a huge Superman fan that runs a Superman blog, but I didn't vote in the poll because I do not regularly visit Digital Spy. There's also no way to account for age, gender, and race breakdowns in the sample. Because the sample is nonrepresentative, there is no way to limit bias in the sample. The poll doesn't tell you what the general audience wants. It tells you what regular visitors at Digital Spy want. Those who visit Digital Spy likely do not represent the general audience, thus the results of a Digital Spy poll only tell you about the preferences of readers of Digital Spy.

Superman did not abandon Kara. That is a harsh judgment call. He is Superman and in being so, is unable to abandon her, but also unable to take care of her considering his self-appointed task as hero.

Never mind the fact that she. just. lost. everything. Including the very reason that her parents sent her to Earth in the first place for.

Abandonment is a bag of kitten on the side of the road. Or a baby left on a doorstep in the middle of the night.

What best describes this is fostering.
I like to think of it as Superman being in the military and stationed overseas. A relation of his just died, and now his only relation is staying with family friends seeing as he cannot do so because of his job. Keeping in mind that his job, were she with him, could very well get her killed.

Let's go a little more easy on Superman, alright. You know who he is and what his values are, and what he would never do.

I was breaking it down in reference to Digital Spy and people who've watched the episode. Just summarized the numbers based on those voters on the percentage of folks who wanted a spin off.

Right, and it's interesting to know how many Digital Spy readers would like a spin off. I liked Tyler Hoechlin as a guest star but am not sure about him leading a show written and produced by Berlanti's CW crew. But, generally, it's fun trivia that isn't that meaningful to me because its significance isn't that far-reaching.

I think Kreisberg could do a pretty good job. He worked on the DCAU. Not giving Hoechlin a show at this point wouldn't be a smart decision as he's made so many headlines with critics, fans and journalists raving about his Superman. I'm sure CW execs are paying attention.

Those results say a lot between the movie and TV Superman.

I am still hoping Tyler's Superman marries Lois and raises a child named Jon.

If we can have two Flashes on TV and film, there's no reason the same can't happen with Superman.

According to trolls who...I really hate with a passion, but, they might have a point here...this Monday's episode of Supergirl, post-Superman, is when the ratings will drop. And I mean really drop.

I sorta have this thought, this point of view theory, that deep down inside, regardless of how good the show could be, people don't want Supergirl without Superman in it. If Supergirl had Superman as a supporting character, someone who could appear in most of a season, but the series and its story still on her because its still her show, no problems at all. The reason isn't because she's a girl, its because of her connection. A connection that cannot be severed. I mean we all love Tim Drake's Robin, but a Robin series won't work unless Batman is in it too. Even with the same rules that he's a supporting character on the show who appears in most of the season, and the series itself still focuses on Robin as he is the show's main star. Same thing here.

I want the show to succeed further and continue on, and not be cancelled due to low ratings that won't support it anymore. But I feel that the show needs Superman to be part of the show full time in order to do that. And TBH, I want Superman on the show permanently too. But that's just me and my theory.

Superman, like Batman, casts a huge shadow and commands vast star power. He's too iconic to be pushed aside. It's a good analogy with Supergirl and Robin in trying to sell them without Superman and Batman and you can't.
