I dunno if it has changed but last i read civil war didn't make as much as iron man 3 which you kinda wonder what happened there, I heard a theory BVS hurt the movie purely because they are both comic book movies and the casual audience don't see them as any different to each other

Too many superhero movies.

Too many superhero movies.

I think more of "too many blockbuster" movies. Seriouslly, every week is starting to be release some big budget expected-to-be-huge-at-the-BO movies.
2017 is looking to have even more than this year.

Man, this sucks. I loved this movie and I'd love to see more of this new cast. I think a new fresh creative team could really work wonders with these new X-Men.

Or maybe its the new cast. It didn't pay off at the box-office with Matthew Vaughn at the helm and now with Bryan Singer.
Fox should try X-men and Fantastic Four in one movie.

The ship has sailed when Fant4stic bombed.

Yeah .. or maybe X-Men in general. I mean, look at FC, great and amazing reviews, the best out of all the movies, and it didn't outgross the previous movies. Now the same.
Overall, good reviews, bad reviews ... = not that much money at the BO.

But I agree with you. Whatever it would have been, be it with the OT cast, XMA would have been better. At least 650 million would have been a lock, I think.

They just can't continue recasting characters or introducing a younger version of a established character... and expect more people to show up. Familiarity sells. And few months ago, I've listed a dozen prequel films that didn't earn more money than the last movie at the box-office. X-Men: Apocalypse is just the latest film to that list.

The piracy conspiracy is pure MCU fanboys refusing to accept that the MCU may not have as good as legs as they thought. There have been pirated copies for pretty much every major film since the internet.

90% of the pirate copies that usually come out within a film's first 6-8 weeks of release are usually of crap quality where it's just a guy video recording the theater screen. Those are the types most people will avoid because the the picture clarity and sound is too poor.

The ones that are out now for X-men and Civil War after 1-2 weeks of domestic release, are practically dvd quality. Piracy is a lot easier for people nowadays who own android phones. There are numerous piracy apps that are similar in design to netflix that allow people easily stream/download good quality versions of movies and tv shows for free. I work for a cell carrier, and I see tons of people, young and old, who have those types of apps on their phone when they come in for repairs. With devices like chromecast and apple tv, it's not hard to beam pirated content from one's phone to a tv set.

I don't know how you can ignore that this won't effect the box office. It might not be the most devastating that effects it, but it will chip away at the movies earnings.

I agree with this. Between February and the first weekend in May, there have been 5 movies that have earned over $300 million dollars. The GA have spent most of it's movie going money a lot earlier than usual, and when you factor in the uninteresting marketing for this movie, along with bad early reviews, it was an easy decision for a good amount of people to simply pass on it.

Seems like that sorta thing happens either way, just look at the MCU currently, no film has topped the 1st avengers yet, avengers 2 made less, and civil war made less the Iron man 3 and they ain't prequels but somehow the box office while still very high is still gradually going down.

Although an argument could also be made that to much familiarity is when audiences get bored, look at 2 of the surprise hits of the past 2 years, guardians and deadpool, both unfamiliar projects with characters the casual audience do not know but people clearly went to see them more then alot of the more familar projects.

Shhhhh! No place for facts here! It's crazy how people are downplaying the box office of this film like it is doing well. It's not! They had high hopes for this film and it is not living up to expectations! This film will be lucky to get to $500M WW! :o

I think it will reach $500 million worldwide especially if it does well in China. But God! It is such a big drop from DOFP's $748 worldwide gross.

There's a reliable guy on another BO forum that says this may get around $6.7M for Friday

When they get ou the SW movie they say that the second opus is always "the more dark and complex", DoFP was more dark and complex than Apocalypse. They clearly tried something lighter and more funny. But people prefer complex information, as through language or so. Segmented, cut. Computer generation, we are the code.

dare i say i but its probabpy the opposite, quicksilver was the stand out for many but thats not because he is a complex character., infact the trailers probably made it seem more darker and complex then it actually was.

I doubt merging a fading franchise with a dead one would lead to positive results at the BO. In any case, it's highly unlikely FOX would be able to merge two separate cinematic licensing agreements without getting approval from the Mouse.

The release date was not good, I mean, the movie is facing competition from Ninja Turtles, Angry Birds, Jungle Book and WarCraft not to mention Civil War (which is still in some theaters.)

Coming out in the same year as BVS and Civil war didn't help, the hype train for comic book movies are going full force now but how much hype can the casual audience take before they need a break

What if Civil War and XM:A had each other's release dates ?

Those that would pirate a movie would already pirate it. Quality has 0 effect on it. There isn't a sudden surge of those going to pirate the movie.

Yeah, the last few months are full with hit movies that "everybody should see". I mean:
"Hey, Deadpool is coming out and I must see it."
"Hey, Zootopia came out and had amazing reviews, so I guess must see it."
"Hey, BvS is coming out and I must see it."
"Hey, Captain America: Civil War is coming out and I definitelly need to see it."
And next up XMA, TMNT 2, not to mention something like Independence Day 2 and Legend of Tarzan coming out.
It's just in so little time, so big movies coming out that GA thinks they have to watch.

Back in my day, long ago, it was "Did you saw Avatar? YOU HAVE TO SEE AVATAR 20 TIMES!" only for a whole year or so.

I do hope Deadline's numbers are right. Because that would mean that TMNT would only win the weekend with the Thur previews.

From what i hear the theaters are not packed for TMNT, i doubt it will flop though

It's looking at making half of what the first one did opening weekend, though.
