The Winter Soldier "Yeah, it's going to be fun"- The Black Widow/Scarlett Johansson Thread - Part 1

I'm seeing the movie and therefore Widow soon. :awesome:

So expect to see me here giving my thoughts.

Scarlett Johansson was terrific. Black Widow was a terrific foil to Cap in this. I am so glad they didn't make Cap and Black Widow become romantically involved. That would have been too easy.

She was fantastic in this movie. This is BW's best appearance in the MCU to date, BY FAR! Scarlett got most of the laughs in my theatre with her quips and sarcastic remarks. Also her
kicking Sitwell off of the roof
made the audience that I was with laugh out loud. Oh and the running gag of her trying to set Cap up on a date was really funny. It was cool to see her more human and vulnerable side as well, and despite that, she was still a badass. That is how you right a good and well-rounded character.

I loved Widow in this she was every bit as bad ass as she should be. I loved how they changed her personality up a bit as the character can be quite cold/bland (depending on who's writing her) in the comics and even in her first two film appearances. The illusion trick she pulls was straight out of Deadly Origin and I loved it.

I thought it was funny that when this clip of her was first released everyone was like the effects/wire work was bad cause she looks like she's on a wire but in the film she actually is hooked up to a wire here to get to a lower level.

Bring on that solo film!

And the wire's wrapped around a guy's neck.

Yes, loved that. Widow was fantastic again. She really owned in combat. Using her gauntlets to stun, hitting that goon over the head as a coup de grace, etc. Her dynamic with Steve worked well, felt very right. She blended seamlessly into his world.

I just really wish that she had an epic fight scene in this film. Would've been cool to see her being able to go toe to toe with WS just due to her training before having to retreat.

I absolutely loved her in this one. man, bring on that solo film if it happens. :) I loved the relationship between her and Cap. It was cool.

Agreed - this appearance just stoked the fire even more. I still want a solo Widow outing.

Every time I think about this movie, it's almost always on the tip of my tongue that Scarlett *stole* this movie, even from my Chris, and it doesn't even bother me. She was so good. So. Effing. Good.

And whoever thought she didn't have chemistry with Chris in their other movies? Yeah, no. They were smokin' together as platonic buddies with a current of… "something else" running between them. It's not that I even "ship" them, but jeez they were great, great, great together.

Shipping...that's a dirty word round these parts.

Cap/Widow's chat in the car was a lovely little scene. They had a fun dynamic.

I also enjoyed their back and forth evading the agents in the shopping centre.

Those were pretty enjoyable. Putting those together was a great idea and you could really see the stark differences they had in the beginning melt away as the plot unfolded.

I am really interested to see what they are going to do with her next. Everything about her is out in the open now so she can't go on that many undercover missions anymore.

That's never stopped her in the comics before.

IF I hadn't spoiled myself before seeing this film, I would have thought for sure that Steve and Natasha were going to have some kind of romantic moment take place between them when they were talking to each other at Sam's house after having washed up, let alone having a real passionate kiss at the end of the film in the cemetery scene.

I feel like Natasha and Steve are definitely the "Harry and Hermione" of the series where, despite having such obvious and strong chemistry with each other, they still remain platonic friends

I know some people are going to complain about the widow/cap relationship but I've heard a lot of female fans of doctor who say that the one thing they want with a new doctor is some form of chemistry or sexual tension so it makes sense marvel will pop something like that in.

Not all female fans like that of course but for some it really enhances the movie (and for some guys too)

I love tasha. Do you think we will see a fabulous new hairstyle for avengers age of Ultron? I love that every time we see her she has tried something new

The set pics showed she has the Avengers hairstyle again.

I liked the little cameo of Widow's Corvette. Lovely car, I had a smile when she pulled up in that, and took off fast.

I am not going to compare Avenger's Nat to TWS Nat, only because I think they were equally awesome and it's only personal bias making any difference for me. I just wanted to say, though, that I think one of my favorite scenes in this movie was
Natasha witnessing Fury's surgery. I can't remember the precise wording, but she starts sort of muttering something like, "Please don't do this. Don't do this to me, Fury." and even after you can see her lips still trembling, like it's some uncontrollable reflex and for a woman usually so in control it must have been killing her. That, along with the way she acts when she finds Fury gave Steve the drive, asking him why he went to Steve's apartment - you can see how important Fury was to Natasha. And you could tell how it hurt her that Fury would trust Steve over her even when she was all too compliant in going around his back earlier. That whole part packed a lot of emotions. Like a metal fist punch to the face worth.

While she had more personality in this film than in previous appearances, I think characterwise she took a step backward here, and felt more like a collection of spy elements than a character, if that makes any sense. Her motivations weren't ever really explored, she just sort of did "spy things", like misleading Cap, etc. She's a lot more "flirty sex appeal" and less "capable spy" in this, though she's still very capable in the physical sense.

I don't think Marvel quite knew what they were doing with the character when WINTER SOLDIER was filming. Is it too much to ask that Black Widow get some kind of development and exploration beyond "I have a mysterious dark past"?

I found myself hoping she'd be secretly in league with Hydra and revealed as a double agent, just so she'd show some decent character evolution and development.

Honestly, this movie was the best chemistry Chris has had with any co-star since CA:TFA. ScarJo('s performance) brings out a real cheeky side to his that balanced the whole good guy/Boy Scout thing that Steve Rogers has. Ditto Anthony Mackie.

Not sure what movie you were watching, but everything she did, from her mad hacker skills to her combat work to posing as
Jenny Agutter in the WSC scene
was more than "capable spy."

I mean, her motivations were pretty clearly laid out in the scene at Sam's house. She didn't want to be brainwashed/controlled by a puppet government so she switched sides. Now her central conflict comes in that she realizes SHIELD that she's been working for were the bad guys all along, pulling her strings to do their bidding without her realizing it, and the only person left that she can trust in her immediate presence is Cap.

Her motivations were really very strongly laid out, moreso than her being present for mere "flirty sex appeal."
