The Dark Knight Rises You Have My Permission To Lounge - Part 3

Really? From what I've read he is the fourth most important character after the Cap, Bucky, Tony trio. Guess I'll find out in two days.

Technically, yes he is. But I do not think he really gets enough screen time to be fully explored. Neither does, say, Spidey, but Spidey is made such a scene stealer in his sequences that it hardly matters. The only three with a lot of development are Cap, Bucky, and Tony (and honestly I still don't really care about Bucky, which might be the film's one noticeable weakness). The rest are pretty supporting, but it is more problematic for Black Panther since he is given importance throughout the story, yet we hardly know anything about this guy in this particular movie.

I'll be seeing Civil War tomorrow night. That is, if I have time to make it to the theatre. Usually I finish Saturday shifts at 11 and the film starts at 11:30 (but the cinema is 10 minutes away by car).

I will say that even if it's amazing, I don't agree with the consensus that it broke the "third movie curse" or that it's a perfect trilogy. In order for that to apply, the first two films had to have received great reception. While TFA's response was decent, I wouldn't describe it anywhere near "great". Same is true for the Iron Man films. Even if IM3 had been a bit better, the rule still wouldn't apply due to IM2 being underwhelming.

Rises is still the only film to have "broken it", and even then it was only to an extent since it caused a huge division among fans. It's the only one that crossed the finished line, but it got there with some injuries in the process. X-Men: Apocalypse might be the first to cross that finish line with no injuries whatsoever.

Was there a lot of critical acclaim for tdkr? If so, could links be provided?

Rises was a very successful film by every standard - box office, critics, general audience reception - except for fan reception where it was very divided.

Saw Civil War... It's totally broke the 3rd movie curse.

It had everything I wanted out of a superhero movie, the seriousness and the fun all wrapped into one.

In fairness, guys, Cap is not a trilogy. First Avenger doesn't lead into Winter Soldier, and Winter Soldier sure as heck doesn't lead into Civil War. Same as the Iron Man movies are not a trilogy. Iron Man 3 is more of a sequel to the Avengers than the first two Iron Man movies.

Yeah, if Apocalypse turns out to be a hit, then you will have a true trilogy to compare to TDKT.

Except First Class kicked things off with an average movie :p

So i saw Civil War tonight. My favorite Marvel movie. Such tremendous balance. Every character had good motivations for what they wanted or why they were behaving that way. It wasn't so black and white and the actors delivered that.

My only problems were with some of the shaky cam during the first action scene. They seemed to fix that. And i thought
they still played it a bit safe at the end. This is Civil War and i felt like they did to War Machine what they did to Nick Fury in Winter Soldier (with the fake death). It's like they're afraid to kill characters off. Fury isn't even in this. He's almost irrelevant now, so why not? In here, i liked the message at the end but felt like every character was once again left there to heal, kick ass for another Avengers, when they could have easily killed Hawkeye or War Machine off. Or at least end the film with Cap and Tony still at major odds with a lot of negative energy coming from Tony. But the final 5 minutes was still well executed for what it was. I still had a smile when it finished.

I was so happy the finale wasn't some typical Marvel or DC finale. You know, explosions, buildings crushed by ships. So glad that Bucky, Iron man and Cap didnt have to battle a death squad either. They were killed and then that amazing twist was revealed. What a great payoff for that first scene from 1991. Downey SOLD THIS soooo well. Puts Affleck to shame when you see him getting hot about Supes and all the death that went down.

Beautiful scene between Black Panther and Bruhl's character.

A great debate between both sides of the Avengers early on in the film. Such good back and forth, substance, reality, maturity. This is what we hoped for in Batman v Superman. I think i can speak for all of us who chime into this thread, when it comes to that.

Great chase between Panther/Cap/Bucky. The airport? Great fun, bad-assery, hilarious Ant-Man and Spidey.

Falcon stole it for me with his line to BP "do you like cats?". Trying to figure out what his thing was. :funny: so good. Great little moment where Bucky and Sam are in the car too. Bucky asks him to put his seat up. Then these two creeps smiling at Cap after that kiss. These two need a buddy comedy.

Spidey was AMAZING. But how did Tony know it was him

I'd rate the theatrical cut of BvS a 2/5. Civil War gets a 4.5/5 for me. Infinity Wars is now the first Avengers movie that i'm looking forward to seeing in the cinema. Thanks Russo Brothers.

I liked CW and found it to be very enjoyable. I would give it 8/10. Right now, I put it up there with IM 1, TA and TWS, which are the best Marvel movies IMO. I think all of those movies are of similar quality and it is hard for me to put one above the other. I am going to have to re-watch them sometime soon, and maybe then I will be able to pick a favourite.

Who else thought Panther had many parallels to Batman in BvS? [BLACKOUT]Being consumed by vengeance. Almost killing the wrong mass murdering man. Even going as far as to spare the villain.[/BLACKOUT]

Boseman was fantastic. He had that same rage and fire in his eyes that I saw in Bale and Keaton. None of that blank face thing going on like Affleck.

Very true. Black Panther is the one character who I thought was short-serviced by the story (Spidey, Hawkeye, Ant-Man, etc. were supporting players). But Boseman was fantastic and unlike a certain Bat actor of recent note, he does indeed have a life behind the eyes that rages with intensity.

As hot as Elizabeth Olsen is, I always snicker when she tries to talk with that accent. She constantly slips.

Yup. I will say this, though: IM3 actually tries to give some sort of closure to the solo IM series, which I didn't think was the case with CW.

Man, Tom Holland fricking nailed the quipping. It was geeky and endearing. Not that knife nonsense from the first ASM movie. That was straight up bullying. Not Spider-man.

And it's good to see a Peter Parker not acting like James Dean.

Interesting and thanks for the link. For whatever reason (and I guess I was wrong) I didn't think tdkr had much of a critical reception as Batman Begins or TDK. I just seem to remember a lot of people pointing to Batman Begins as a successful reboot (which I don't really remember hearing that word a lot until after Batman Begins). TDK reviews were of course plentiful. I guess the main thing I heard about tdkr was that it broke the third film 'curse' however I didn't hear how it had taken the genre to a new level like tdk.

Just got back from seeing Civil War - thoroughly enjoyed it, unsurprisingly. I think I've gotten a new appreciation for the Marvel movies after seeing the wreck that is BvS which I have, upon further ruminations, pretty much come to despise.

But enough about that - Boseman as Black Panther stole the show for me. Loved his arc and while I'd agree that he didn't have enough screentime, the arc itself felt very satisfying and 'earned'. Dude is very charismatic and likable in the role, also.

I liked the Cap v Stark conflict (TeamIronMan, just for the record), but couldn't really be arsed about Bucky tbh, as DACrowe was pointing out earlier. I did like how the conflict was fleshed out in the film, though, and how there wasn't really a right or wrong side - I confess that my being on TeamIronMan was based more on emotion than anything else.

Spidey was quite the scene-stealer, as others have pointed out - I was kind of not feeling this version when they first revealed him in one of the trailers, but the movie sold me on him. Looking forward to the solo movie. Oh, and Marissa Tomei...:hmr:

Can't wait for the solo Black Panther movie as well - who's directing that?

Ryan Coogler of Fruitvale Station and Creed is directing Black Panther. That, plus Seeing Boseman in this role has me pretty pumped about his solo film.

I think I've found my new favorite superhero tune.

^ I find myself pretty partial to "Cap's Promise" so far.
