The Dark Knight Rises You Have My Permission To Lounge - Part 7

Homecoming will probably be the first watchable Spider-man movie since 2004, but otherwise, it just looks so perfunctory. GOTG looks like it suffers from 'bigger, badder, bolder' sequilitis. Ragnarok looks fresh. It looks like they are taking Thor in an interesting direction, at last. And dat cast. Seriously. Plus, how can you go wrong with some Hulk gladiator action?

It feels like Thor has to earn his worth again. Instead this time he will have toil the brutal battlefield of alien gladitorial battles instead of the scorching bore and enormous emptiness of New Mexico. With a battle hardened Tessa Thomson challenging his personality, instead of a disinterested Padme. It feels like they are gonna combine the most interesting parts of Thor, with dashes of gladiator and GOTG, producing the most interesting Thor movie already and the most exciting release of the year for Marvel.

We will see. Doctor Strange also sounded bold and out there when early press materials came out and in some production stills. And then other than a great sequence where Strange tricks the bad guy in a clever way, it all felt like a slightly Harry Potter-ized version of Iron Man to me.

With that said, if Waititi, whose other movies I love, can pull a rabbit out of a hat and make a bold movie in the Marvel system, I will be a happy camper, because I am seeing it regardless.

Just a thought: Logan is probably what The Wolverine would've been if it was directed by Darren Aronofsky as it was originally meant to.

Yep, I've been saying that for a while now-- Logan is what they wanted The Wolverine to be. As someone who was incredibly excited about Aronofsky being on board initially, and then being really let disappointed in the watered down end product... I couldn't be happier that Mangold and Jackman made the most out of their last shot.

I still really like The Wolverine. I think it's much better than some people give credit for.

Nowadays I feel like it gets unfairly grouped with Wolverine Origins.

The Wolverine was great until the last act. But yeah I agree that Logan is what The Wolverine wanted to be.

My favorite thing about The Wolverine is the Japanese setting.

I wish more cbm's would take place in more interesting countries.

Even Logan had a few over the top moments in the last act. But thankfully Mangold was able to keep a stronger command over the tone this time.

Wonder Woman trailer was fine but Gadot has not convinced me yet and I'm starting to think that she may be the weak link in the cast just like Cavill in Man of Steel.

I think it has the potential to receive a slightly better reception than MOS

That's the highest compliment I can give in regards to WW, at the moment.

As much as I loved Logan, it still hurts that Aronofsky didn't take on that project. A proper attempt at the Claremont/Miller comic is still something I really want to see. But it's not likely to happen now.

Looking at his filmography, Hugh Jackman made quite a career for himself working under a good number of skilled directors.

Speaking of Huge Ackman. His co-star Zac Efron, in The Greatest Showman, has a taste for tees I think a certain someone here will appreciate.

Revisited Raimi's first two Spider-Man movies. It's been at least several years..

Spider-Man (3/5) - fun time, nostalgia. The dialogue and Goblin are the two things that bring this movie down. I love DaFoe and he's a solid Norman, but he's a terrible Goblin. The suit is goofy, he overacts everything, the dialogue is straight out of a bad cartoon when Gobby speaks, and he's directed like a cartoon just as much as Schumacher directing villains. There's no intimidation factor which is a shame.

Love seeing Macho Man again and there's some laugh out loud moments in that wrestling scene (Bruce Campbell, "where did you get that tank top? Did your husband buy it for you?") but come on. As a gigantic wrestling fan, this scene is still insulting and beyond cringeworthy. It's like Raimi has never watched wrestling before he shot the scene. Fans, especially in this modern era know it's a work (scripted, not trying to kill each other). Even counting to 3 without a cover? Lmfao awful. Very lazy. It's like those people who go "wrestling? You know it's fake right?" :) yes, we know, just like you know that a movie is fake! Haha I know it's probably nitpicking but not if you understand that side of the industry. More effort in the details Sam!

The dialogue throughout the movie is corny exposition. Aunt May annoys me in this more than MJ. I always liked Dunst in the first film.

Maguire is soo good in this role. The suit looks great. Actors have chemistry. All the Peter/Uncle Ben scenes are top notch. The robbery, Peter making the choice..that's how you do it! Good laughs in this movie.

Spider-Man 2 (4/5) - Better than the first on every level. Even the flaws are still an improvement. Flaws? Random subplots that feel rushed like MJ's marriage. A similar third act with the damsel in distress, and a villain being controlled (the whole "split personality", talking to himself and answering). Aunt Mays hero speech is both emotional but heavy handed at the same time. All Harry Franco does is whine in this movie.

OK the good stuff. J.K Simmons is perfection, again but even more here. There will never be a better Jameson. Maguire is perfect. The action and effects are incredible in this film. Alfred Molina isn't hamming it up as much as DaFoe and Doc Ocks looks good. I always complained about the corniness of the horror hospital sequence but this time I dug the hell out of it. I guess watching it in the context of the film made it a better experience.

This movie is still pretty character driven. The humor and music is superb. Organic webs or not, Peters dilemma and how he loses his powers, only to get them back when he's inspired again..just works so well. What else? Great opening credits and ending. The comedy is so well done. Love how the hero and villain relate to each other. The move into a crappy apartment was a wise choice. "Rent?" :)

Aunt May is an improvement but MJ is now getting annoying. It's like a reversal of the first movie in that sense..

Wow Dunst lost a lot of weight and changed her hair. How come I don't remember this change?

I prefer Spider-Man 1 over 2. It's better paced, Dafoe hams it up to awesome levels, and it isn't bogged down by excessive drama like in Spider-Man 2.

Also Mary Jane is so unlikable in 2. If I was Peter I wouldn't tolerate her at all. Ridiculous behavior.

The lack of discussion about the WW trailer shows it really made an impact with the regulars.

Oh btw Spider-Man 2 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>every other Spidey movie.

It's not hard to be the best movie of that particular franchise. But I have a feeling Homecoming won't be as good either.

I have such a fondness for Spider-Man 1, but I'd be insane to think it was better constructed than Spider-Man 2.

Still some of the best comic book movies ever made in my opinion.

Some of the drama feels forced in Spider-Man 2. Like MJ being mad at Peter. God I can't stand her in SM2. She gets ridiculously over the top mad at Peter for not showing up to her stupid play, even though she told him she's getting married while knowing that he loves her.

When she finds out he's Spider-Man then she wants to be with him and just abandons her fiancé (who seemed like a nice guy) on the altar for Peter after he said he couldn't be with her.

And while I'm all for character driven movies, SM2 really drags at points.

Even with their flaws they're tons of fun and there's heart and chemistry. And most importantly, you feel for the protagonist. They're not masterpieces. I wouldn't even call the first one a good movie but it's decent enough where you can enjoy it on multiple viewings. But at least they have all of that going for them. That wasn't the case with Marc Webb movies and most comic book films in general don't have what the early Raimi movies had.

I agree about MJ evolving more and more into a irritating character. The worst line is when Peter tells her he's going to see her play and she says to him "don't disappoint me." Rewatching the movie, I literally said "f*** you!" to the tv right after she said that hahah.

About your criticism of S2 dragging. I can see that but for me those scenes in the middle are probably my favorite parts of the movie. Those scenes are why that sequel stands above a LOT of comic book movies. They usually can't wait long enough to get back into some expensive action sequence, but S2 took its time developing the main characters more. Peter Parker needed to breathe and spend some time away from the hero gig long enough so when he comes back to it, it doesn't feel rushed and pointless that he retired in the first place.

She doesn't get ridiculously over the top mad. She just gets upset that her supposed best friend can't make it to see her big break on Broadway, when everyone else in her life, including her abusive waste of a father, was able to make it at least once.

When she finds out he's Spider-Man then she wants to be with him and just abandons her fiancé (who seemed like a nice guy) on the altar for Peter after he said he couldn't be with her.

But you excuse her kissing Spider-Man and being in love with him while she's dating Harry and clearly doesn't really want to be with him in SM-1? In fact in SM-1 she goes from Flash, to Harry, to wanting to be with Spider-Man, to wanting to be with Peter all in one movie.

Leaving John at the altar was hurtful to John, but at least she did it for the right reasons. In SM-1 she couldn't make her mind up who she wanted to be with. Her lust for a guy changed as frequently as the weather. Her bad behavior in 1 is only surpassed by SM-3.

And while I'm all for character driven movies, SM2 really drags at points.

I disagree. It was consistently great and well paced. Good balance of drama and action.

When Spider-Man Homecoming hits theaters, You know there's gonna be some people hailing it as the best Spider-Man movie ever, no matter the quality of the story and villain.

Been there with the terrible ASM movies. It will blow over, unless Homecoming is legit awesome and the best one.
