85th Annual Academy Awards (2013) - Part 2

I bet giving Argo best picture made the Academy guys cry
It looked like Affleck was going to cry throughout the whole ceremony, and in his acceptance speech he let it all out.

That was a pity win to shut people up. Good for Ben Affleck though. I wonder whats the actual Best Picture win. In the minds of the Academy a holes

Because a nomination in itself is almost as big an honor as an actual win.

Yeah, but getting nominated only to lose multiple times gets tiresome.

Dude, it's just an awards show. He's not breaking down the establishment or sticking it to the Man.

Nah, we need a hipster!

Has there ever been a year where the major awards were this scattered?

2006 if I'm not mistaken.

I certainly prefer it this way as I often feel that when some movies when 10 awards or whatever its based on pure momentum rather than truly being the best in that specific category.

This. I think its more fair with the awards being spread out instead of the same film winning a dozen awards.

Shatner appearing, in costume, was bizarre.

Either his way of making fun of himself (since Kirk is what people in general know him just for) or making himself feel better since he couldn't work out a way to come back in the new Star Trek movie series. Probably both.

Macfarlane is a huge Star Trek fan. That's probably why Shatner is in the show, and Shatner doesn't turn down a gig, not of this size/porportion, and this much exposure. His ego wouldn't allow it.

Here Macfarlane does a good Kirk impression. Starts at 1:15

But the top award winners get to talk longer than the bottom award winners. So David S. Cohen here has no argument.

Eddie was Marius, the one who fell in love with Cosette. I thought he was a terrific Marius (his "Empty Chairs at Empty Tables" is a killer), and I thought it helped that they moved Eponine's arc around from how it was in the stage version so he didn't seem as much of a dope.

In the show, Marius finds her dressed as a boy on the barricade, she tells him she did it to be with him, and he still sends her off with a note to Cosette. She's the one who gives the letter to Valjean, and then she goes off and sings "On My Own".

In the movie, they kill her off before all that. Marius never knew she was there until after she'd been shot.

I love her song - and there's an opening to it that's missing in the movie, as well as a verse that's missing from her death scene.

Ah I see, I think you are spot on about the way they reworked Eponine's arc, the other way makes Marius look a dick and would hurt the rest of the movie as the Marius/Cosette romance was kinda hard to digest to start with.

The way "On My Own" is performed is so sad, I felt Sam Barks really conveyed the haplessness of Eponine beautifully, with just enough resolve that it made her death even more tragic. :(

"I Dreamed a Dream" killed me in the movie, though. In the show, she sings it after she loses her job. In the movie, it's after the prostitute scene, where she's in this place where she couldn't possibly be sunk any lower. That was brutal.

The imagery I think really made that song more powerful, it was hard to watch and the agony in Fantine's voice as it partially breaks during the song really increases the impact.

Not sure. I thought I heard she was doing another movie.

Musical movie or regular?

Rhianna going back to that piece of trash made that joke open season.

I'm so happy for Life of Pi. My favorite film of the year. 3 Tech Awards and the Directing Prize!

I think Barks signed on to another musical movie but I remember not being impressed with whatever it was. I hope she doesn't fade into oblivion. She has potential.

Of the 6 big awards I'd have only picked two of them for sure, Ang Lee for Best director and DDL for Best actor, the latter being such a forgone conclusion given who he was playing.

I had no issue with Waltz winning but I thought it would be TLJ.

Anne was as close to a favourite as DDL but I can't shake the feeling she won for a single song, I need to see The Master before I could really quibble though.

I thought Chastin just edged Lawrence but neither performance was that special IMO, I think Chastain had some stronger scenes though. Still, from a business perspective it made more sense to give it to the young actress who is going to be a big star for the next few decades.

Best picture seemed like a case of wanting to give it to one of the "US beat terrorists" movies and they picked the one without torture. I thought Life of Pi was head and shoulders above any of the other nominees and will be a film long remembered.

Badgering Ri Ri ain't gonna make her leave Brown. Her and Brown were raised to think that domestic violence is natural. I think they will get marred in five years to be honest. And that they will stay married for a long time until she gets sick of it.

That being said Seth is a comedian and I liked the joke. I like edgy diry jokes. That joke wasn't too far to me. The A-hole from the Onion calling a 9 year old the C-word on Twitter is the thing that has me fuming. That person should be fired.

These gifs are making McFarlane look like a total disaster. The disdain shown in that Lawrence gif is particularly hilarious.

I hope she takes on a non singing role as well, I'd like to see what she can do without music.

Sadly true and I don't think she's the sharpest knife in the draw either, so the joke played as a slightly mean yet accurately funny one.

Someone said something about the kid from Beasts of the Wild?

The Lawrence and Theron reaction shots during the boob song were taken from somewhere else as they are both wearing different dresses to the ones they had on at the Oscars.

Honestly, I kinda think it was the reverse with the BP logic.

I'm betting if ZDT had taken more of a stand against the torture in the film, and made itself more preachy, it would've been much better received.

But instead, it was honest, and I think that made a lot of people uncomfortable.

no one answered my previous question

is she a good actress or can she just sing and her 2nd film being another musical doesn't help matters

Also, speaking of things that are tiring due to their persistence not to learn any better...

People who know they won't like the Oscars, yet watch them anyway while constantly complaining about how much of a waste of time it is need to stop. Its akin to repeatedly trying to pick up an electrified muffin totally unaware of why you're being shocked every time you touch it.

Yup. Those were recorded during the rehearsals the day before.
