Argo and Town seems to show promise in these quailties for affleck, but yes he has too much baggage and recognition
In those movies, he was the main character and the LEAST interesting actor/performance. I don't think he has much depth as an actor. He's much better as a writer/director, but even then his work in those areas is a little...overpraised.
Well this just proves that you just plain don't like the guy. Gone Baby Gone and The Town are far from simplistic and safe. The Conjuring is safe. Friends With Benefits is safe. Just because they aren't non-chronological-ambiguous-ending-indie-faux-intellectual, doesn't mean they're "simplistic." Making an interesting, entertaining and tense movie is HARD.
I liked The Town and Argo. But they were overpraised. Argo, especially, was very safe, yet filled with problematic political stances and artistic choices. He's good, but he's nothing terribly amazing.
He makes entertaining movies, sure. But they're prestige popcorn films, and that's NOT a bad thing. But they are simplistic and lack emotional or artistic complexity in many ways. That's a different discussion though.
The general public never hated Affleck, they were sick and ****ing tired of the medias coverage of his personal life. Gets your facts straight.
Yeah, they kinda did. But the obsession with the tabloids and his personal life tied into that. He had YEARS of movies bombing at the box office.
Gone Baby Gone's ending is certainly not safe.
We just got one of the hottest directors in Hollywood for the next Batman film. We have an Academy Award winning director to take Batman from Nolan. Make no mistake, Ben's directing the next Batman film. That's why this is exciting. Batman/Superman may suck, but with Goyer and Snyder writing, its chances were slim anyways. Maybe Ben can give those guys some pointers too. Who knows.
He won an Oscar for co-writing Good Will Hunting and co-producing Argo. Calling him an "Academy Award winning director" isn't wrong, but a little dishonest.
And now with this casting choice, future Batman films will have the director of Gone Baby Gone, The Town and Argo. Ben's got that Oscar. I'd rather deal with Ben as Batman and have him in the director chair, then even get Bale back and have Snyder.
I'd be ok with him directing a superhero film. I don't know about Batman. But it could maybe do something with the genre behind the camera.
I think that people remember his earlier movies, and tend to forget that this guy went from movies like "Pearl Harbor" and "Daredevil" to movies like "Argo" and "The Town".
Because in those movies he's typically the weakest or least interesting performance. And the MAIN character. When you think about the best performances in The Town you probably think of Jeremy Renner, Jon Hamm, Pete Postelwaith (sp?) and Rebecca Hall. Argo had Alan Arkin doing his Alan Arkin shtick, John Goodman was quite effective, all of the actors playing hostages did solid work. Affleck doesn't really linger in the mind like the rest of the performances. He's a little blank and bland as an actor, he has a very limited range and can do well enough with it, but he can't stretch himself much.
I just think that Batman is outside of his range. If I'm wrong, I'm wrong, but I'm not confident in the choice as it stands.
