The way the character was written in TDK was more fitting for Gyllenhaal than Holmes, but it was to big of a personality change from Rachel 1.0 to Rachel 2.0. It's just too jarring to me, it's almost like a completely different character.

So he could do whatever he wants with the character without being tied to the comic book lore, I assume. But I'm still not fond of Rachel Dawes.

He certainly wasn't tied down with his interpretation of Selina Kyle (and neither was Tim Burton, who probably took the most liberties with that character, making her supernatural and all). Case in point, he could've used Andrea Beaumont. She shares the closest character resemblance with Rachel Dawes, as she was someone Bruce grew up with more or less (teenager to adulthood) and she was also someone he would've left his Batman career for (and almost did). Nolan wouldn't have to include her alto ego as the Phantasm, but possibly hinting at such a path, as well as including Beaumont's backstory and her connection with Bruce, would've been loads more interesting than creating a character out of the sky blue.

I don't think the change would have been that jarring with Holmes playing her again instead of Maggie. I think people change, and the development would have been similar on screen but just with the same actress instead.

I agree. I would have preferred Beaumont as well. Though, as you noticed, he might have feel obligated to do at least some nod to Phantasm in that case or he'd be aware that there are fans who'd expect him to do so and he wanted a clear path entirely... then again, he certainly took some liberties with other characters.

As for Selina Kyle, he didn't deviate all that much from the core of the character, she was still a sly, cynical thief, it's just that she was looking to retire in this story, same as Batman as a matter of fact. I'd say that she was at worst a bit whitewashed. I don't like Hathaway's performance, but that's another thing altogether... Burton's version was a complete bastardization and I can't stand it.

But I don't think Holmes would do well in most scenes in TDK. It's not just the fact that she is a bad actress, but the overall vibe she gives off wouldn't fit them very well. I'd say that it would be best if they cast for "Batman Begins" someone who would fit both directions of the character well enough to compensate such a change in writing. Of course, we'll never really know whether Holmes would do a good job or not. My bet is on "not" though.

Gyllenhall played Dawes as no longer enamored with Bale, so I don't mind the lack of chemistry there. She's become an unobtainable goal to Bruce, while she and Harvey are comfortable enough to get ready to marry.

Playboy Bruce/social animal Bruce is always a variable that'll be kind of weird; Keaton went for eccentric to excuse the crazy, Bale went for apathetic *****e, and I'd argue that even Conroy's animated Bruce's changed from more doofy philanthropist to suave but detached.

With Affleck, there's going to be some change-up. They have to determine whether they want playboy mode to be sincere at all, or just a play act by a master actor.

Did not like the change personally. I didn't think Maggie's acting outweighed Katie's for this particular role to have made this a successful change of actresses.

The acting wasn't better at all and in TDK she was more the damsel in distress and the love interest as opposed to an actual character who was aimingnfor something that got tied into the Batman plot. And let's not talk about the physical downgrade from Rachel 1 to Rachel 2.
I honestly was on board all Katie's scenes with Bruce until she kissed him, I felt there was no need to go the romance route.
From stills I like seeing Diana and Bruce together, it looks interesting st least.

Agreed on all counts of this post

He does look like he's about to eat someone's lunch

Certainly a man of large stature

I really want to see the Matches Malone persona onscreen at some point.

This is true. I think it's neat that this time around, we'll get a look at a more intellectually/physically fantastical and more aggressive rendition of the character. We've had a solid Gothic take with Keaton and the Heroic approach with Bale. And Keaton and Bale did very well with their assigned take on Batman and have left their own unique mark on him that people extol to this day. I hope that by the end of Affleck's run as Batman, his take is as recognized and celebrated as those of Bale's and Keaton's.

I think Batfleck will win over the comic fans, and I think the GA will love a Batman who can dodge heat vision and take on Superman :)

Ironically, I think the shot with the most character is that of Bruce hugging the girl.

His eyes are so intense, yet strangely calm. I get hypnotised every time I watch that part.

BeastFleck mode resumes. I wonder if that's an indication that he'll soon be making an appearance in another DCEU film. Maybe Wonder Woman? Hmm.

Well I don't want to see no skinny Affleck at the BvS World premiere. :o
