Chapter 37- “One of Us, One of Them” – Discussion Thread 9/29/08

That's the thing. I don't think it's a matter of training. Like someone said earlier, you can't teach someone to wiggle their ears. You either know how to or you don't. It's what makes Sylar so special. He can just flip on switches. I don't think anybody else has that level of control over their own biology.

Parkman's psychic though so there's at least some kind of leeway in his ability to take on other abilities (at least those similar to his own) but I don't see Claire learning how to fly out of the blue.

Plus I'm thinking that's what the Nikki clone experiments were about. Unlocking different powers in one individual. Testing the theory. Apparently they didn't all have the same powers no matter how many they cloned, but I'm getting ahead of myself here. It's just odd that an EXACT biological clone (if it is a clone but come on...really...) doesn't have the same powers.

I don't think his powers are advancing, and honestly I can't think of any comic book telepaths who have seen the future as a part of their telepathy, but I could be wrong, I think Matt was using his powers to channel the African's ability. If he see his visions of the future in his mind, then there's no reason Matt couldn't use his powers to see them.

This was the exact same way I read the scene and I am really glad I am not the only one who saw it this way.

That everyone already has these powers and it's only a matter of unlocking them.

I get what's he's saying here, but I think he worded it wrong.

What this poster is trying to say (I assume) is that the people that have powers, all have the ability to take their powers to the next level (i.e Matt's mind control, Claire's No more feeling etc.) but they all need to push themselves, or be put into situations where their adrenline is pushed to a high level, or even beyond their limits. Remember, Mohinder finally broke the code and learned that the powers are activated from the adrenal glands, not the blood.

All of our Heroes have the potential for their powers to expand into other branches that their original powers encompass, they just need that extra push or motivation. Claire got that motivation or the last push from her attack by Sylar, Matt got his extra push from the guidance and herbs that Usutu gave him.

i see what your saying i just feel that the next evolution in mind reading and having people see trapped in mental visions would be seeing the future

That's actually not what I was trying to say but it's a good point too.

What I mean is (using Sylar as an example) is that everybody has these abilities IN their brain and they're lucky to unlock even one, therefor using that much more of their brain. Maybe 11 or 12% as opposed to just 10 like regular human beings. Now here's Sylar who comes along unlocking door after door after door by just looking at brains and finding where they are. Finding the switches to open them. I think that it's POSSIBLE to unlock these parts in others as well but I don't think it's a matter of training. You either can or you can't.

In Matt Parkman's case, he's a telepath so it's probably through those abilities that he's learning from his spirit guide (don't know his name) how to use this ability. I don't think someone like Claire or Hiro can learn other abilities out of the blue. They have what they have and that's that. But guys like Sylar, Peter, and Matt have room for improvement because of the way that they can tap into other people and learn.

Just caught the episode:

- Daphne is pretty cute :D

- I totally forgot what's in that box Claire's hoarding.

- Hiro's stupidity never ceases to amaze me.

- Can't believe that out of those 4 new villains, they've already killed 2 and imprisoned 1. Here's hoping that black guy plays a bigger role later.

- Hayden's acting inside that hotbox was painful :(

- Dr. Simmerman made it sound like there're a whole bunch of Nikki clones running around. Interesting

- Love that they're adding depth to Sylar. Was really starting to get bored.

- I was right about Jesse's sound manipulation

Well, there was a future dream by Mama Petrelli that had him ripping Claire's head off, so I'd assume he does play a bigger role in the show at some point....which will ultimately be rather anticlimactic.

I assume that the cloning thing IS what it looks like, Zimmerman did think Tracy was Barbara (Most likely another clone). Maybe Zimmerman has powers? I can see him as a Mr Sinister type figure, a genius with biology and genes.

Yeah, I could see some Mr.Sinister in him

Yeah, I don't want that "Villains United" future to come true. Zzzzzz

I think people are missing the point here. That everyone already has these powers and it's only a matter of unlocking them. Sylar can see how things work so he knows how to activate these things in himself by just looking at the brain. For other people to do the same it takes work. For Parkman it must be easier since he's already telepathic so maybe seeing the future is just an extension of that. I mean some people even have the same powers as others (like West last year who could fly and apparently there's another flyer around). I believe that they're going somewhere with this.

Very good theory, Savage.

I know of a couple of telepath/precog combos but they are rare. A child of the New Gods back in the 70's or 80's had precognition, postcognition and telepathy. Captain America also ran into a telepath/ precog girl in his own series. She called herself Snowfall, she was actually a 12 year old girl named Ginny(sp?) Snow.

Meredith is cool I will agree, but Sandra Bennett is one of the most well written characters on the show, how you can dislike her is slightly beyond me.

Yea, Sandra Bennett is probably the most well written, non-superpowered character on this show.

She's great, the actress as well.

she's tough enough, in spirit and her confidence that you can believe that she could actually survive living through the crazy events of their family's past.

Plus her cattyness with Meredith as to try and protect Claire was pretty awesome.

She smells funny.

And I'm glad I wasn't the only one who made the Zimmerman/Sinister connection  :D

Ugh... people who believe the 10% myth.

WE USE ALL THE BRAIN PEOPLE.

Seriously. If they all now have every power in that very stupid myth 90% of unused brain... show sucks and I'm never watching it again.

Myth?? Cant say Ive ever heard that that was a myth. Ive always heard that if we used 100% of our brain it would become pure energy. I think Einstein said it but im not 100% on that

Yeah, that would suck indeed :csad: Haha, I remember in college when a professor clarified that we use all of our brain, but sometimes only 10% is needed for one particular function, I was like, ooooh :O
