Green Arrow series in the works at The CW - Part 1

Does anyone refer to him as Green Arrow in the comics? Not as a far as I know. It's either Ollie, Arrow, or GA. Villains tend to go with Arrow. Green Arrow is more a name that the media would put out there. Something-man is one the individual comes up with but has to work with the theme (and Arrowman doesn't). Green isn't a title like Detective, Doctor, or Professor for people to yell out or say in a sinister way to make it seem like they have the upper hand when confronted by the hero. And how many people do you address by their first and last names?

Of course, I'm not saying he should be referred to as The Arrow, like The Blur, The Phantom, The Spider etc. Maybe over the course of time as he becomes more known to the public, the media will dub him Green Arrow because it's catchier for headlines (depending on whether they want to present him as a hero or a menace. The Arrow makes him sound more dangerous than Green Arrow)

There are arguments for both sides, and I would have loved it if it had been called Green Arrow from a comic fan's point of view. But to grab an audience, the shorter version is fine with me.

Thank you, now that's a more logical rationale. I assumed that probably the newspapers might dub him Green Arrow rather than taking on the name itself, but the preview seemed so dead-set on him being "Arrow". One thing is, there's not really a good excuse to say "Well why would he call himself 'Green Arrow?' that's just silly!" Because in that regard, why give himself a name at all?

Because they're trying to create something better than the comic books.

They're trying to take the source material and bring it up to a whole new level.

Whether these guys have the talent to do so is another question.

This is their own spin on Green Arrow. They've called him "Arrow" to nail that point home.

Don't you think that's a load of bull?

When has a TV show ever actually surpassed the source material?

Smallville sure didn't do it, and "Arrow" won't either.

^green arrow source material hasnt really been the greatest thing since sliced bread.

And whose to say they can take some of the best things from ga long history and adapt them and show fans and new fans that ga can be good. Arman I agree I can easily see the media calling him ga when reports come out on him due to his outfit. But the cops and crook just call him arrow.

No, it really isn't. And it's really not separating itself from anything, if it's essentially Green Arrow Year one mixed with Iron Man. Besides, I never complained about the way it seems to be handled so far. In fact, I was pleasantly surprised by a lot of it. Especially, I'm glad they're bringing in the internal monologue. That's something from the comics that a lot of adaptations throw away.

All I've said is there's no logical reason to change his name in the series from Green Arrow to Arrow. I don't mind the title change, and if this was fanboy rage, I'd swear off the series altogether(which I'm not going to do, in fact, I'll probably end up at the pilot screening in SDCC). Thing is, it would probably even behoove them to keep the name Green Arrow. Because A. it sounds more like a superhero, and that's obviously big now, and B. Smallville fans will most likely jump onboard to see the character's return.

Iron Man? As far as I know Iron man is very light and comicy. It is also full of humor. Nothing like what we've seen so far.
I dont understand how its similar to iron man.

Excellent points

Just because something has never happened doesn't mean it won't ever happen.
But for arguments sake, The Vampire Diaries, How to train your dragon, True Blood and Hunger Games are some examples of TVs and Movies that surpassed the source materials as according to critiques online. But could be debatable.
Also WB has great track records for adapting books to TV shows and movies. Perhaps they haven't done exactly well for certain of their Superhero adaptations but there are tons of stuff that they did that were on par or better than the source materials.
Lord of the rings, Game of Thrones and Nolan's Batman are other examples I can think of. Not to mention their animated movies stuff are top notched. Every single one of the animated movies stayed true to the source and were excellent products. Also, their animated series are the same.
Who could forget BTAS, STAS, JLU and adding Young Justice and GTAS to their achievements.

Honestly, I'm not sure why people would get so upset with one or two changes.
Would you guys rather a production that didn't change anything but didn't perform to your expectations (I'm sure you know which one I'm talking about lol) or stuff that changed a little here and there but were spectacular.
Until now, WB's greatest accomplishment of their Superhero franchise didn't stayed true to the source but managed to be a great watch.

Smallville's changes weren't very good at all.

Arrow's reimagining of GA as The Dark Knight meets Bourne actually has potential.

I'll keep an open mind about the show but I've never been a fan of making things "dark" and "gritty" just because it worked well with Batman. This show seems to be a reimagining of Green Arrow much like Smallville was a reimaginging of Clark Kent's teen years so I'll definitely give this show a shot.

True, but wasn't longbow hunters, a series everyone refers to as some of the best GA stuff, dark and gritty.

If this was any other hero I would defintely agree, but GA kinda lends himself to it.

Super heroes without powers almost always have to be gritty and dark. There are probably exceptions somewhere I'm sure but I do not know of any off the top of my head.

No I don't mind changes as long as they are good and logical changes. I am open to certain changes. But on one hand for comic based cartoons/live action tv/film. There is key things they need to get right in who/what said character is. So the fans get to see the stuff they love from the comics brought to life.

Also I agreet not everything needs to be realistic/dark/gritty. Just cause that works for batman that is batman. That is what take nost fans like for batman. But you try and put that approach in other characters like say spidey/flash/etc... characters that is the wrong way to go about a character.

As for a subforum I don't think it will get one. Didn't one of the mods mention that awhile ago.

Aw man that sucks. Smallville had its own subforum as well. Couldn't Arrow have one too?

We would have to bring it up to the mods its there call on these things.

Perhap when the show starts and this thread gets lotsa traffic, we might get a Green Arrow forum.

Kind of surprised no one has posted this yet...review of the pilot.

Katie cassidy comments on playing dinah:
From collider-
Katie Cassidy Talks Briefly About Her Role As Dinah Lance In ARROW

The actress shares her thoughts on playing such an iconic character in Arrow this Fall, reveals when filming continues on the series and also comments on her excitement to premiere the show for fans at this year's San Diego Comic-Con. Josh Wilding - 6/13/2012

This Fall, the CW will debut Arrow; a show focusing on the adventures of Oliver Queen, a.k.a. Green Arrow. Katie Cassidy (Supernatural) will play Dinah Lance, a character better known to comic book fans as the Black Canary. Talking to Collider, the actress confirmed that she will be returning to work on the show this July and had this to say about playing the well-know DC Comics character. "It’s a little intimidating, yeah, but when you’re so in it, you have to let that stuff go. You can’t think about it ‘cause then it just gets in your way."

"I try mainly to just focus on character and what my character’s point of view is, with each person, and try to figure out story," she added. "I’m just there to do my job. I’m really excited about it! I think it’s going to be really, really fun. I’m working with a great group of people, and everyone is amazing and really talented. I’m really lucky to have given the opportunity to do that." As for the recent announcement that the show will premiere at this year's San Diego Comic-Con, Cassidy said, That will be awesome! I feel like I’m still not in the headspace for that yet, but it’s the perfect place."

It would help it survive to season 2 if the wait-and-sees supported it from the get go

Only if the wait-and-sees have Nielsen boxes in their homes.

If this show survives, I'll check it out in season 2 maybe

If you are not intrested in watching the show now, I doubt you will be watching it during season 2. I don't even know why you came to this thread if you weren't interested, unless it was to dissuade anyone else from being hyped up about it (that's a nice way to put it without saying trolling).

Warner Bros. today released what the key card art will look like — a variation of the international promo art that surfaced a few weeks ago. Arrow won’t be the only key card art we’ll be seeing… they’re also doing cards for 666 Park Avenueand Revolution.

Arrow will have a panel on Friday, July 13 in which cast members will appear and the pilot will be screened. Pilot screenings are also scheduled for Comic-Con’s Preview Night.

You can have a larger look at the key card art at KSiteTV.
