He looks to be in nice shape to me.
I guess I'm the only one who enjoyed the mullet. Some artists made it work just fine, it thought it looked cool
I have a toy of Clark with a ponytail, lol.
As a kid, I used to think that Electric Superman was cool, and also had a toy. I still think the design is cool, just not for Superman....Looking back, it really is odd how they "reinvented" the character to make him "cooler"... ?
I guess it's just because when I watch, I couldn't give a hoot about the silly costumes or the funny poses... those are just part of the 'comedic' side of the show. It was angled to be a rom/com, so I don't even notice it anymore.
But it's the message behind all that colourful dressing. There are so many moments of exploration into what being this man would actually be like. So many times where he says something or does something that makes me think 'THAT is what Superman is about'.
When I watch Dean Cain, I believe he IS Clark Kent/Superman. I also completely believe he is in love with Lois Lane. He has me convinced 100%.
Isn't that what being a good actor is?
The fact that his Superman portrayal isn't as drastically different as Reeve's proves nothing of his acting skill. That's how he was ASKED to play it... The point is, the audience is suppose to see that Clark is acting whenever he puts on the suit. That's how the show portrayed Superman, as very much the disguise. So we see the over the top macho poses, we see Clark's attempt at standing taller, putting on more confidence etc. People complain it makes him seem like a characature of a person.... but that's kind of the point... your supposed to see Superman as something unreal, your not supposed to look at him and think for a second he could be a normal person.
Now, I don't want MOS to be the same. I don't want Cavill to take a leaf out of Dean Cain's book or anything.
I feel Dean Cain played THAT interpretation perfectly, and that Cavill will play a very different interpretation and hopefully do it very well too.
Because I think that a Superman film should have a more complicated look at who he is (Superman/Clark/), because I don't think it is just as simple as one is a disguise over the other like so many interpretations try and do. Lois and Clark made Superman a disguise, almost to the point where he became ridiculous. STM made Clark a disguise, beyond the point where he was ridiculous.
This time, I hope they show that both personas have elements of disguise and reality in there.
FreeRadical said:I liked the electro design too, but for Superman it was a bit...out there. Almost looked like a male version of Livewire. Might have worked for The Flash.
The mullet was an interesting design, especially since modern screen versions of Superman/Clark e.g Welling, Routh and Cavill have longish hair, and not the usual short back and sides.
Hopefully Cavill will keep his Superman body shape, or at least close to it, like Will Smith did after he filmed Ali. It's disappointing when an actor trains hard, then all the gains are gone. Christian Bale's body must take a hammering with the constant weight gain and loss he goes through. Tobey Maguire just gave up after the first Spider-man.

I never really watched the show, but I definitely dont hate Cain either. Just the show, the suit-design and that the producers were willing to ridicule the character with that suit-design. That crap didnt even look cool in the 90s.
Great post. It definitely seems like that's what they were going for, Superman as this big disguise. Heck, the show is called "Lois & CLARK", not "Lois & Superman". My guess is that he got the role because he made Clark work, and Superman was a secondary character? That's the vibe I always got from the show. Anyway, after reading your post, I really want to check this out and see what sticks.
I will report my thoughts latert:
I've gotten so used to seeing him in Superman shape, it's kinda weird seeing him out of shape lol.
You're kidding, right? I'd love to be that out of shape.I've gotten so used to seeing him in Superman shape, it's kinda weird seeing him out of shape lol.
I completely agree with (and just generally love) this post. Now, I don't want MOS to be the same. I don't want Cavill to take a leaf out of Dean Cain's book or anything.

What's the polar opposite of Chris Reeve's Superman?
about his muscles and body from the poster.
1. posters are photoshoped.
2. this is in what shape Cavill was when he filmed Light and Day. like it or dont like it. who cares. this is how he looked. end of story.

I've often wondered if at first, when in public and using the persona of superman, Clark should act cold, not cold as in distant or robotic, but he shouldn't have instantly recognisable 'western' or 'modern man' characteristics - think of an African tribesman meeting the American public for the first time or a man from ancient Rome being transported to a modern day city, instantly we would feel he doesn't belong here! Still doesn't mean he has no emotion - I just want him to appear 'alien' so when lois talks with him, compared to her time with Clark, there is a huge distinction between the two - clark is a humble, decent young man, raised on a farm. Superman is indeed all powerful, non human but sincere. Makes a great reason for the public to be skeptical! He's not some teenager in a Lycra suit with added confidence knowing he can websling away from bullies!

Well, outside of the comics, there was Superman TAS.
TAS was probably the only decent Superman property to come out of the 90s because it didn't fall in with the current trends happening in the comics and media.
After Superman died and returned in the comics, they completely ruined his character for almost a decade.
Even the wedding was considered by half of DC, according to Paul Levitz, as a major mistake. Hence why the Lois and Clark marriage was finally retconned in New 52.
Electric Superman, ponytail Superman, domesticated Superman, Lois and Clark the series, Tim Burton's Superman... they basically had no idea what they were doing.
