I think JDF may have been the big star at the Phoenix comic con? The guy said that they had fought before which was a delusion of his.

Not even remotely surprised.

You mean like having the first LGBT superhero ever...oh wait...

It did stuff fans have wanted the TV show to do for years like character development, especially coming off of stuff like Super Megaforce.

Coming off the current Nick run in general. They're getting better, I guess, but this movie was a breath of fresh air and that's more than enough for me.

But better character development isn't the exciting marketing tagline to reboot or adapt a franchise for.

Power Rangers will always have a big stigma against it. And I'm not sure Kaiju are as big of a pull in America as it will be in the rest of the world unless it's a Godzilla.

I really liked it, people were expecting Transformers-esque non-stop action and were let down. I expected a decent film with character development being it's over 2 hours long, and I was satisfied. It gave us a proper origin (even Zordon/Rita had an origin!) and if they do more, we'll be getting more action now that they're rangers.

Absolutely.

Definitely agree. It was my favourite movie so far. I enjoyed it more than Wonder Woman and the other movies I've seen this year so far. Still playing catch up though and have a lot of movies left to see. I mean just a week or so ago I finally saw Beauty and the Beast. Still haven't seen Logan, F&F8 etc.

I'm jealous and happy you've seen WW already Reel Man.

The "just wait for the sequel" doesn't fly in the world of Netflix and a 1000 distractions. If the movie doesn't show confidence it what it has, why would people jump for the sequel.

Could just end up with the Prometheus - Covenant scenario where the former now looks better in retrospect.

How are they going to do more action with the same or less budget?

Their budget wasn't the problem with the action. It may have been a problem with zords but certainly not the action.

Character development is great but not when it takes up majority of the power for a franchise that is known for action/zords. It is something that needs to be balanced out and the action in this movie sucked.

They threw everything at the end and was just rushed. It was unsatisfying and just sub par. The Martial arts sucked and the zord stuff sucked.

I think the problem is we are so used to superhero movies rushing through the origin story and having 3/4 of action. Naturally you bring something that doesn't fit the conventional mold of what people expect. Reminds me a bit of how Watchmen was advertised as a regular popcorn type superhero movie. People went to see it then got something other than what was expected.

It has nothing to do with superhero movies.

Power Rangers the franchise comes with its own expectations. It would be like calling a movie Baywatch then having 3/4 of the movie in a office building because that's how you build tension in Diehard.

Even if the budget is only 90 million. That's like 10000x what an episode of Power Rangers got and what is the most memorable part of the action?

If they were going to pour all their money into that last 30 then they had to come up with action that made the audience at least say," whoa, it was worth the wait."

Like said before, I'm glad they had good character development, but that basically means they spent 100 million dollars to settle an internal argument about whether PR is a goofy product.

Having a well paced movie is not a problem. Batman Begins, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Thor, Captain America, Superman: The Movie. None rushed the origin. None were 3/4 action.

Once again, making it so "it's all about friendship man" in order to morph is dumb. They took out all the fun of morphing.

They should've been able to morph earlier and take part in a putty fight on a town or some such. However, during the fight everyone is kind of doing their own thing and they aren't gelling as a team yet. That way you set some action apart early and you get to see them morphing and learning to control their powers.

Super Sentai Shinkenger understood this. At first, the team had a lot of tension and they couldn't really get along at first. Some of the characters were sort of aloof with each other. When they tried to form the megazord the first time, it was a failure. They had to get on the same page.

Morphing also looked like garbage in the film. It was boring. There wasn't a fun morphing sequence.

Exactly. I really enjoyed it for what it was and hope we can see more in the future (despite a sequel looking unlikely at the moment).

I'll definitely be picking it up when it releases.

People expect spectacle with a property like Power Rangers. There's no getting around it. It's an action franchise

And the silly thing is the 2 are not mutually exclusive. You can have a movie is with kick ass action and spectacle and still have good character development or at the very least good characters

Making a feature length movie based on a property known for martial arts and giant robot/kaiju fights and not featuring enough of that is f***ing stupid. And now they're paying for their stupidity

Keeping my fingers crossed. I might double dip and get both the US Best Buy combo set and the Steelbook from here. In any case, Im hoping we'll have some good news around the home video release.

Power Rangers 2 May Yet Happen, Thanks to Toy Sales

By Becky Fuller 7 hours ago
A Power Rangers sequel could still happen, despite the first movie’s box office under-performance. The big screen reboot of Saban’s Power Rangers didn’t exactly go as planned; the movie received mixed reviews, grossing a meager $85 million domestically. Though it enjoyed a healthy opening weekend, ticket sales quickly slumped. In China, where expectations were high, Power Rangers didn’t fare well at all, taking just $1.2 million on its opening day, and a total of $4.2 million thus far. Altogether, that puts Power Rangers with a global figure of around $140 million.

Figures like that sadly mean any subsequent Power Rangers movie sequels are unlikely – something director Dean Israelite couldn’t have been expecting, when he added a mid-credits scene that hinted at the arrival of the Green Ranger in future movies in Power Rangers. In fact, it wasn’t just one Power Rangers sequel planned; multiple movies were rumored. Hope is not lost, though, because ultimately, Power Rangers’ toy sales could be its saving grace.

Power Rangers 2017 Cast and Alpha 5 Power Rangers 2 May Yet Happen, Thanks to Toy Sales
The main cast of Power Rangers (2017)

A report by Toy News states that NPD data has Power Rangers listed as the number one action figures brand, with a massive increase in sales this past year. In the last year to date, figures are up 122.8%, with April 2017 listed as an increase of 185.9% on the same month in 2016. That puts Power Rangers as the 11th best seller across all toy properties. In fairness, those figures cannot all be attributable to the Power Rangers movie; Power Rangers: Ninja Steel has enjoyed huge popularity on Nickelodeon this year, with a second season, Power Rangers: Super Ninja Steel, confirmed for 2018.

Given that kids are reliant on adults taking them to the movies, and Power Rangers was rated PG-13, it seems likely that Power Rangers: Ninja Steel is why the toy sales have lifted so massively; kids can enjoy free access to the show whenever they like. However, such an increase can only be looked upon favorably by Hollywood execs, who might just think a second movie in the franchise will be viable, especially if they can tie its release to the back of a Ninja Steel season.

Power Rangers is, arguably, deserving of a sequel due to its groundbreaking depiction of superheroes, which is hugely influential to a young audience. The Blue Ranger, Billy, lives with Autism, while the Yellow Ranger, Trini, identifies on the LGBT spectrum. Going forward, if another Power Rangers movie does happen, it can only be a good thing for these characters stories to be expanded upon.
