Man Of Steel Soars @ Comic Con - Part 2

When I first read it, the art looked refreshingly different to me and quite surprising, though it did take some time getting used to, mostly due to the thin outlines and "the blockiness" of the characters' frames in some panels, but I thought the character designs were really nice, as was the usage of empty space.

For instance, both Jor-El's and Clark's piercing blue eyes looked stunning and I appreciated how much Leinil Yu focused on them. Perhaps it was the writer who suggested it? There's plenty of others who only focus on Superman's physique, the costume, the flying, and so forth, but the face itself is lacking of emotion or, rather, the artist can draw only so many different expressions. They're not particularly... subtle. It's disappointing when the palette of emotions is kind of narrow and repetitive, especially when the story itself is great!

But in Birthright, I liked how expressive the eyes were and how they made the characters more real. The facial expressions overall I thought were better than some of the other artists' portrayals of Superman. That dreadful "dead look" in his eyes or when every character, particularly women, look interchangable save for hairstyle and haircolor, can be a big turn-off. And, ok, the eyes may be a small thing to give this much attention to in my post, sure, but they really stood out to me here. :-) They've always been very important to me when it comes to Superman. They're just as important as his other physical traits.

I hope we get some close-ups of Henry's fierce eyes in MOS because, hey, Batman's not the only hero who can bring a bad guy to his knees with a single glare! 'Sides, a lot of acting can be done through the eyes alone. If Henry's emotions can flicker in his eyes from one to another as fast as, say, Tom Hiddleston's in Thor, I'll be one happy bunny! In the scene with Odin when it's revealed who Loki really is, Tom's emotions shifted from surprise to pain to disbelief to anger in a matter of seconds, and they all showed in his eyes.

This Birthright page of Clark's first job interview at the Daily Planet is one of my fave because of all the tight close-ups of his eyes. They say so much even without dialogue:

I'd like something like this in MOS. The third panel in the third row is the reason I own the original artwork page by Leinil Yu. :D I just love it. The shifting between the "insecure" and "intimidated" look, and the almost resigned look when he makes his decision ("Sigh, now I have to start the Clutzy Clark shtick"), is amazing. That last eye close-up is my fave because he looks determined. "No, I can do this, " he thinks. He's determined to make a lasting impression on Perry, hehe, and he sure did! *catches falling pens and makes a spectacle of himself* LOL at "Leave the pens." Didn't take much for Perry to fall for the false persona! Clark's just that natural of an actor.

And I also absolutely loved Dave McCaig's coloring from the get-go; colorists are underappreciated in general, aren't they?

Sorry for being kind of off-topic, eep.
you can explain it all you want- i still didn't, and don't, like it at all.

nothing beats curt swan and jim lee (for tomorrow era)
i liked Jim Lee's For Tomorrow work for a time, but in my opinion, i personally like Gary Frank's pencils of Superman more

^damn you are right lol

man i know you absolutely love reeve and his costume and original films but this screams bias lol

lol, that may be... but i still like it more

Frank's rendition looks realistic, and beautiful :)

A better looking Lois...lol. In real life Margo never looked liked that...though I still love her protrayal of Lois.

Hey, I was just making conversation. ;) It's cool if you didn't like it. I don't like the classic The Dark Knight Returns while everyone's obsessed with it.

I think that may be because Frank's Supes looks like Reeve...lol

I don't mind the Reeve resemblance (though Frank has some problems drawing young people/kids' faces but it's no biggie), but when some of Gary's sketches were first released, it reminded me of an article or interview I've read once about comics not wanting to mimic the movies because they want to be a separate thing entirely, and how a Superman actor's resemblance should "never" be used as a template or too big an inspiration for canon Superman.

When Superman Returns came out, I remember how Pacheco (I think) said he wasn't allowed to use bits from the SR costume in his art (like the belt, for instance) or make Superman too much like Brandon Routh. Though, personally, I see a tiny bit of resemblance, it gives Superman a more youthful look (which isn't bad! I thought he looked dashing). And then we had Gary Frank drawing a VERY Reeve-like Superman years later, a Lois that looked enough like Kidder, etc.

And I wondered why this apparent rule didn't apply to Gary Frank. Is it really just someone in editorial not liking a particular movie costume design or actor, so they don't want them to be used? Does it depend on who's the more popular portrayal? Because "No resemblance to movies and actors" doesn't look like a strict rule to me when we've got several storylines with a Reeve!Superman now (and successful ones, too).

Does anyone know more about the matter? This isn't a critique, it's just something that's been on my mind for years...

Insterestingly enough, early Renato Guedes art of the character was also based on the Donnerverse Superman and looked exactly like Chris (a panel or two was lifted straight from the films), and it got published (granted, this wasn't in Action or Superman). Later, when he was a regular penciller, he did change his design of Superman a lot.

And I'm glad I'm not the only one who wants some close-ups of Henry's eyes! :D

I thought this was on purpose because this was a run that was co written by Richard Donner (Director of the Superman movie) and Geoff Johns

Jim Lee would be one of the best Superman artists of all time if he could ever learn to draw the ****ing "S" shield correctly. I don't know why, but he can never, EVER get it right.

i didn't like it either... put superman in a bad light

dont get me wrong, i still love Lee's artwork from For Tomorrow- but he seriously lost a lot of respect from me when he redesigned Superman

Roach may be correct because I believe there was an arc co-written by Donner. I thought it came out before the movie, but it could have been released afterward. I'm not sure now. Though, I clearly remember when Lois and Clark was on TV Supes and Clark both changed noticeably in the comics, particularly Clark, so if they do have a "no inclusion" rule they're very choosy about when they choose to follow it.

lol...you're not alone about the eyes...Superman has some "beautiful comic" blue eyes so it's good when they are highlighted. It subtly reinforces his alieness....imo

The portrayal is ridiculous, I can't get behind it at all. Superman looks like a posturing idiot and is written completely out of character IMO. It's been a while since I've read the comic but I distinctly remember being very disappointed with it.

Thanks for the info! Yes, that could be it, and I guess Gary Frank didn't see the point in changing the Reeve design after the run with Donner was finished. Because Geoff Johns wrote Superman: Brainiac but Frank's Superman still looks like Reeve. :)

Indeed, Clark's eyes are something else! In the Donnerverse, I loved that shot of Reeve in the Fortress when he's having dinner with Lois, and the camera lingers on his impossibly blue eyes. And I always wanted them to be blue in the Animated Series because they gave Bruce Wayne these almost otherwordly light blue eyes and Clark's were just black, and the difference was made even more obvious whenever they were on screen together. Argh!

If we got a close-up of Henry like this, zooming on his eyes:

My reaction would be:

Lolololoolololololol...you and me both.

I haven't seen a good picture of Henry Cavill. Does he have natural blue eyes?

edit:

Speaking of Supes eyes in cartoons... What shot is that from? You should also check out Young Justice on CN. I just recently caught up with that show and they look like they gave some thought to Supes and Superboy's eyes.

Yes, his eyes are blue/grey-ish blue, depending on the light:

He has Sectoral Heterochromia; one of his eyes has a bit of brown in it. :D

The shot is from Superman/Batman: Apocalypse, basically a Supergirl origin story, but DC/WB didn't want to have 'Supergirl' in the title because they thought boys wouldn't want to buy something with 'girl' in it (they did make sure the little pic on the dvd that was of Supergirl was the "sexy bad girl" version of her). The film has one of the nicer Superman designs, methinks.

Yes, I love Young Justice and have been following it from the start! :woot: It's a wonderful show and I love Superman and Conner in it.

EDIT: Hahaha, we used the same pic of Henry! :D

looking at jim lee pic i posted should we see superman red eyes ?

how awesome would it be for his eyes to get red and goes all wild man on zod!!

Hmmm...nice :woot:

I never watched the Tudors, so I'm not really famililar with him. Though he has some nice eyes...and other parts. I hope they do just a bit of CGI to make them a bit more striking as Superman. Not a big deal if they don't.

Ahh... I have that on blu-ray, but I'm still undecided on how I feel about it. I may watch it again and see if I have a different reaction since I have only watched it once.

I think the eyes for Superboy and Supes in YJ are the best I have seen for any cartoon incarnation of Superman.

Guess I'll have to post another picture just 'cause....

:hrt: :woot:

His hair's pefect here, I love it when it's at this length. And his bottom eyelashes are like Clark's in Birthright - Leinil Yu's one of those rare comicbook artists who draw male heroes with noticeable eyelashes! *chuckle*

The hair also looks darker on the pic than in what we've seen of MOS so far. Is it just me?

Wouldn't it be great if Superman shot a glare at someone that was so intense, it would make the other person pee their pants from fear of being burned to a crisp? Haha. I'd love to see him rooting someone to the spot with his eyes alone.
