On BvS being a revenge tragedy, that essay had it completely right. Terrio explicitly said he based his script on the structure of revenge tragedies in his interview with WSJ.

Makes it even clearer to me that I didn't watch this film within the proper context the first time. Definitely plan on seeing it again this weekend.

Exactly right. Terrio and Snyder did not throw stuff at the wall to see what stuck. This damn movie is purposeful.

Just put on the Dark Knight Returns Deluxe Edition to watch, I forgot the epic Man of Steel trailer (#3) was on this disc. By far still the greatest trailer I've ever seen for a film.

:hmr: Such a great trailer!

You know watching the anime do Dark Knight Returns film is so awesome after seeing BvS. Even though I love BvS and wouldn't swap it for anything I have to admit I'd love to have seen Snyder to an adaptation of the graphic novel. Especially after what he did with Watchmen.

The acting throughout the movie was phenomenal. I very much enjoyed Jeremy and Affleck in their roles and Gal was pretty good too.

Loved the soundtrack as well, especially the music during the brief introduction of the JL characters.

I also would like to see that. But I think what Snyder did with bvs (suit, batman and superman fight, and the other call backs to TDKR) I think that's all we'll get for awhile which is unfortunate. I would also like to see him do a Batman: Hush movie to.

Just found a very interesting essay about the movie.

Batman v Superman: the modern revenge tragedy.

Holy mother of God.....or should I say Holy Martha.

MIND = BLOWN

THANK YOU HILDENBURG!!! Thank you so damn much!!

I'm so happy right now. I've just finished reading that article (while listening to the BVS soundtrack on a loop, haha) and I strongly feel that the author should get an award for her service to the fans!

I have no words. That may be the most beautiful piece of analysis on a movie that I have ever read!

EVERYONE should read that and they might start loving the movie for what it is instead of what they think it should have been. I am now finally beginning to see BVS for what it really is, a new take on old characters and themes, put forward in a unique and original way (just like MOS was) instead of being a retread or retelling of old and established versions of the characters that we already know about.

I wanted to see so many things in this movie that have happened in the comics and cartoons and now I realise that was my failing as a viewer. Expecting this movie to be a perfect cinematic representation of the established versions of the characters and their established stories was wrong and tarnished my viewing experience the first time I saw this movie.

Now that I see the movie for what it was and really understand it so much better from the point of view of what it was basing itself on and trying to be (the greek revenge tragedy story model), I can actually love the movie unfettered by my pre-conceived notions and expectations!

I think I have found my peace with Zack Snyder's latest masterpiece, a movie I've wanted to love since its inception 3 years ago, since I am a huge MOS fan. Thank you so much for sharing that article, it is exactly the intellectual stimulation and guidance I needed to see and appreciate this movie for what it was.

I'm going to see it a second time this weekend and now I know I will appreciate it a whole lot more thanks to my newfound understanding and viewpoint! :)

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! :D

PS: I realise now this movie IS actually too smart for most people, including me, but I have kept an open mind and improved my knowledge and my understanding so I can appreciate it correctly now and I'm so happy about that.

Seeing as the news came out today about Hans Zimmer retiring from superhero movies. Who would you guys like to see take over the reigns for most of the DC movies?

Something just popped in my mind that I thought I saw. I forgot to bring it up after all the discussions took place and I was engulfed in that.

In the beginning where young Bruce falls in the ground and when he first sees the Bats hanging upside down under neath, did anybody else notice that all the Bats eyes were glowing red? The first reference to Darkseid? Not sure if anybody else noticed.

Also, concerning trailers, I still think Man of Steel trailer #2 was easily the best trailer in the genre. I watched that trailer constantly on repeat. Very emotional. The soundtrack was a great choice. Zimmer's theme was much more bombastic, deep and heavy on the bass.

With Zimmer gone, we need more choir-esq, chill inducing themes for Superman that inspire.

I think even a fair amount of Snyder haters would love for him to do it aswell. It won't happen anyway at least not anytime in the next decade. Between Batman v Superman, The Dark Knight Trilogy (especially Rises) and even the Burtton/Schumacher films we have had a ton of homages/references/influences to it.

Batman: Hush would be awesome and could totally work in this DCEU given where the characters are at.

Anyone else notice that as the bats were lifting Bruce from the cave, from underneath, the silioutte of Bruce is the form of a giant bat amongst the bats?!

I noticed that on first viewing and I get giggles every time I see it.

Dat dude, Snyder.

I remember them glowing red but I thought that was actually me misremembering it lol

I honestly loved this Batman, Affleck killed it he really did.

I did not notice that, man people give Snyder shut but he makes the most beautiful imagery. You could attach his films on silent and enjoy them immensely.

I missed that!

Well, I'll catch it on Round #3. :woot:

Yes. He did.

I readily admit I was one of the "WTF" people who expressed exactly that when he was first announced as the new Batman.

So glad I was proven wrong.

Oh yeah...plain as day. It gorgeous. Look for it next time.

I remember calling you back down off the edge on Affleck:woot:

It took me a few hours after his casting to mull it over. Once I removed his A-list celebrity and tried to look at it from a casting standpoint, I stripped Ben Affleck from my mind and couldn't help to think how uncanny his look was to Bruce Wayne. Like Cavill, he stepped right out of the comic books with his looks.

The only casting that had me sweating really was Jesse but at the same time, I was somehow intrigued to think what he could bring to Lex because it was so out of the box.

People can say what they want about Snyder whatever, but the man is a maniac at casting!

Goodness. That is exactly how I saw the movie.

Exactly! This guy felt the same emotions and made the same connections that I did! I fell for the movie and loved it and this review captures my feeling perfectly.

That Mark Hughes fella is quite something! I loved his review and I'm just posting the link here in case some have missed it >

Review: 'Batman V Superman' Triumphant

His deep insights and wonderful articulation of his viewpoint have helped me understand and appreciate this film a lot more than I initially did! :)

The thing with this kind of movies and the characters in them is that we (the fans) are almost always expecting them to be a representation of what we have in our minds, of the cartoons we've seen, of the comics we've read (I personally don't read comics, but you get my point). So, if the movie is not in sync with our ideas and our preconceptions, then the movie sucks, because that's not my batman/batman wouldn't do that or because that's not my superman/superman wouldn't do that, Zack doesn't get these characters, he should be fired. And we're seeing that kind of reactions now. These characters mean so much to so many of us that sometimes it's difficult to let go of our preconceptions and see them in a different light.

And that's the point you made: the majority of the people who have those complaints are not appreciating this movie for what it is (or trying to be), they're tearing it apart because it is not what it should have been, according to them. Most of the 'purists' believe the comic books are some sort of a Bible, and any interpretation that tries to go to new/different places will be, most likely, considered blasphemy. Again, this is not Batman/that's not Superman.

I prefer to be surprised, to experience new versions of these characters and join them in new journeys and adventures. To be challenged by them. Why would I want to see a story that has already been told to detail in a comic book or a cartoon? In the end, that's what makes these superheroes iconic and relevant – their ability to change with time, their ability to overcome whatever conflict and to rise, no matter how deep they have fallen. BvS is about that. Snyder is showing us, through both Clark and Bruce, that we can always find our way. That's pretty inspiring! Isn't that what Superman and Batman are about? They should inspire us, and they do that in this film.

Zack Snyder is deeply honoring both of them here.

Without a doubt Henry Jackman but he seems tied to the Russo Brothers in Marvel. I love his work.

I totally agree that Zack is honoring both heroes and I feel so stupid for loving MOS since I went in there with an open mind while not being satisfied with BVS for the same liberties that MOS took with Superman, since I had too many preconceived ideas about what this film was going to be or should be.

I feel hypocritical, to say the least. (Batfleck would agree) ;)

I'm just so glad I found this new perspective that course corrected my viewpoint and has allowed me to enjoy this masterpiece of a movie a lot more! :D

Thanks a lot once again!

Wow great essay about the Modern Revenge Tragedy.

I knew I loved this movie but yet can't articulate why I loved it without the "wow" action scenes I was expecting like in Avengers and Xmen films.

I was saying it before, people are expecting a pop corn flick but got a modern Shakespeare instead which cut the fan base in half.

But yet for all the people who hates this direction, they can't stop thinking and talking about this. Like Watchmen, this movie will stick and will be analyzed by future generations.

It's the movie that went against the flow of what is expected. It's the Anti-Cliche movie.
