Person Of Interest - Part 2

A lot of people on the POI Facebook page really want it to be Number of the Week with no mythology or change. Same on Tumblr, still whining about how the show isn't the same. "Waaahhh I'm quitting! Reese is leaving! Shaw is the devil!" Ugh.

I love how Jonah Nolan tricked CBS (and the whiners) into a sci-fi/action show with a HUGE mythology.

I miss the number-of-the-week structure, but to be honest, the show is so good right now, that I don't care.
I do think, however, that after all this second machine plot is done, the show will return to the number-of-the-week, but with a twist.

These people don't know what's good for them. :o

It seems to be returning to it next week with Reese and Samm Levine on the plane. lol

I swear, if Samm Levine turns out to be someone connected to the show's mythology... :wow:

Oh nice, didn't know that. I don't see the promos!

-While Control was interrogating, I was hearing this high pitched beeping, thinking it was just some random, annoying sound. When Root actually brought up the Machine communicating to her through Morse code, I literally flipped my lid. They actually incorporated the Morse code into the show's audio levels, and I could hear it (did anybody else hear it?). Jonathan Nolan, you magnificent son of a *****.
I just watched this again and I could hear the beeping right from the beginning. I didn't notice it at first until the very end of the scene, but if you listen closely you can hear it right at the start. It sort of sounds like the soundtrack, but it's not. Great catch!

Can anyone translate the morse code beeps?

Control: "You say the machine looks out for you? Then why are you in this cell, why has it let this happen? This friend that you love so much? It's abandoned you.."
Machine: SORRY.
<break>
Machine (During dialog):
INCREASED PERSPIRATION. HEART RATE AND BREATHING ELEVATED. INDICATIVE OF FEAR.
Root: "She's been telling me about you... You're scared of me."
2 OCLOCK. 2007 ANTERIOR CRUCIATE LIGAMENT TORN. SURGICAL REPAIR PARTIAL SUCCESS. 2010 PHYSICAL THERAPY DISCONTINUED AGAINST DOCTORS ADVICE.
Root: "All these guards watching... by the way, that one has a bum knee."
And right as she jumps on Control:
8 OCLOCK.

Thanks for posting that. The interesting thing is the machine apologized to Root.

What's scary is that the machine is a couple steps away from Skynet.

The thing is that Finch designed it to protect everyone. So it sees some use from the government for protection from major threats I suppose.

However, what if the machine got fed up with humanity? Remember Ultron in the Avengers ultimately saw that in order to protect the Earth it logically had to destroy the human race.

And now Decima has their own machine.

One of the questions is, if one machine does something to change some event, does the other machine have that information too? Like, if the people are the ones that 'create' the events our guys try to prevent, the events created by one machine, are those taken into account by the other machine?
My head hurts, I hope I explained myself.

I think this goes to what VileOne is talking about. What exactly is the machine's purpose? I like how they are showing flashbacks to Harold building a machine that is designed to be a helper. That makes its purpose benevolent in my mind. Though if Decima gets their machine on line who's to say what that machine's purpose will be.

Just so I'm clear how did Decima find out about the back-up drives Harold's friend created?

Right, right.
It also reminds me of VIKI at the end of I, Robot.

I still remember the movie, Colossus: the Forbin Project, where you had two supercomputers, Colossus and Guardian, who were created to protect their respective countries, and they decided it was in man's best interests for them to join forces and take care of humanity THEIR way...

I mean that's a good point. Ultimately the government is no longer controlling Finch's machine.

What if Decima can't control Samaritan/

The thing I enjoyed about "Number of the Week" episodes was how things would be seemingly cut and dry and then out of nowhere a new series villain would appear.

This show is great! I'm guessing Harold has already changed his name, or just the last name by the time he visits his father for the last time.

I don't know why I didn't think Decima would get involved again. I automatically yelled, "Fredericks!" when he appeared at the end.

I liked Hersh and Collier's conversation. The morse code thing was slick.

As much as the show has changed, it's a good thing. It's not letting major events occur with no impact. Carter's death has left the team somewhat fragmented, as it should. Root has progressed beyond her villainous role. More of Harold's backstory is shown. They're not falling back into the typical routine. This is storytelling at its best.

Agreed with everything you've said here.

At the same time, I enjoy the fact that things established back in the beginning of the series, like the friendship between Finch and Reese, are still being emphasised. I really loved the "I am inordinately happy to see you" moment, because I believe it's probably the first time that Harold acknowledges their friendship out loud, especially when you consider how private and paranoic he was established as initially and how Reese repeatedly referred to him as his only friend towards the end of season 1 and at the beginning of season 2.

amazing episode. i could hear the phone making the noise but it didn't dawn on me that it was morse code until root started talking about it.

Watched that part online again and you can definitely hear some type of noise. I must have concentrated so hard on the dialogue or just thought it was part of the score when watching it live.

Just saw the latest ep, this show is extremely bold with it's characters and the depth of the mythology it's creating, the line between science and sci fi is narrowing each week.

Root's ear. :( Amy Acker was brilliant again this week, she has made Root into so much more than she started out as, the way she delivered the lines to Control was chilling.

Speaking of Control, I wonder what she is hiding at that address and I couldn't help but wonder if her name is a nod to The Equalizer, a show POI was compared to when first announced.

The direction things are going with Reese is interesting, I wonder if he might become the first of the core group to feel the machine is more trouble than it's worth and too dangerous to allow to exist.
