RoboCop Reboot - Part 3

This Robocop is like the Chinese Democracy of movies.

I don't hate the new one but I don't love it either I need to see it in action to make my full opinion. Though I would've much preferred this.

This design is used in the beginning, I believe. Remember, he goes through multiple suits!

I hear ya. But we don't know the rating yet. I don't like the new suit so the surgery would be a big seller for me.

The leaked script is pretty much PG-13 with some graphic scenes

Checked the Wikipedia page, it says the movie will be released in UK 7 months after the rest of the world
What's the idea behind that?

Via the blogging on the main page: They are/have shown footage, and it sounds as thought the crowd are loving it.

yea sounded cool.
seems more relevant than ever now, because its discussing drone usage.

yea, i hope someone was recording. i have high hopes for this.

AI has advanced so much in the 2 decades since the original robocop, it makes sense to have a reboot/remake now.

i still love the original, but am open to seeing a new imagining of it.

Also hydraulics have advanced so much since, so I hope this robocop can actually run this time. haha.

Yeah, what I also like about this one is that it is a new fresh take from another angle while keeping true to the principles the original were built on. The original, for it's time, felt like a 'What if?' scenario in terms of imagining the technological capabilities for the future. While this is still very much the same, it is also incorporating things that are very real and relevant in the modern world today form a technological ability and standpoint.

Btw, sounds as though someone got busted at the back for trying to record the footage, according to the blogging. :csad:

SDCC 2013: RoboCop Panel Live Blog

After some alleged bumps in the road during production and a release date shift, “RoboCop” is finally making its way into theaters on February 7, 2014, and in honor of the upcoming release, Sony is bringing it to Hall H for San Diego Comic Con.

We’ll have all the latest as it comes in, so don’t forget to keep refreshing this post to ensure you’re following along in real time as the panel progresses.

5:09 The panel opens with a clip – a message from Samuel L. Jackson. It’s commercial for robots patrolling the streets in Teran. He’s furious that Americans are “Robophobic” and then we cut to material in the states with Michael Keaton’s character who’s having a discussion about these very robots. Then it jump back to Teran where the seemingly organized and successful situation blows up in Jackson’s face with the robots firing at innocent civilians. Before concluding, the piece jumps back to Keaton who admits that the robots feel nothing. Even if they were to murder an innocent, they’d feel nothing.

5:13 – We’ve got director Jose Padilha and stars Joel Kinnaman, Michael Keaton, Abbie Cornish, and Samuel L. Jackson on stage.

5:15 – Keaton calls his character the ultimate pragmatist.

5:16 – Jackson calls Pat Novack “Rush Sharpton,” a guy with an opinion who isn’t afraid to state it and will do whatever he has to to get people to believe it.

5:17 – Kinnaman says his character doesn’t die. He’s amused from the throat down. Over the course of the film he has an internal battle with the AI and his own soul or humanity. That was the challenge for Kinnamn.

5:17 – Cornish says the idea of love, marriage, and having a child ground the film. She says it was kind of nice to play a woman who really caught for a man.

5:18 – Footage time! Costner says people want a product with a conscience, something that knows what it’s like to be human. Alex Murphy’s car alarm goes off and explodes with him nearby. Then it cuts to Keaton’s Raymond Sellars saying, “We’re gonna put a man inside a machine.” Alex goes into surgery and Gary Oldman’s character explains that if he survives, he’ll be confined to a wheel chair. From there, we go back to Keaton who’s helping design the look of the robot. The Alex/RoboCop comes in – it’s much like the original design, but sleeker and black with glowing red eyes. There’s a black and white shot, seemingly from RoboCop’s perspective, of cops invading a hallway and loads of heat sensor imagery. Eventually Cornish’s Ellen Murphy stops RoboCop and insists that she knows Alex is still inside. A doctor character notes, “Somehow he’s overriding the system’s priority.” A powerful trailer!

5:25 – It’s time for the audience Q & A. Padilha points out that if a cop shoots an innocent victim, that cop can be taken to court and/or reprimanded, but a robot can’t be held accountable.

5:27 – Jackson says he’s here to “juice us up” and get us pumped for the release of the film.

5:28 – Keaton says technically his character isn’t a villain, rather an antagonist. He calls the role complex because he didn’t want him to be a cliche bad guy. He calls him mentally healthy, but whether you agree with him or not is another issue.

5:30 – Last question. Was the purpose of the story to show that technology should be feared? Padilha says that at the end of the day, you should never fear the gun, but the guy holding the gun and it’s similar with technology. But he also points out that that means we should be concerned about technology and that his movie addresses this concept in a big and fun way. He also says technology will meet living beings soon enough. More and more we have interventions with people putting chips in brains to recover vision, so RoboCop is in a prime position to address that.

They're aiming for a PG-13, folks. The director said at Comic Con.

according to the CBM roundup the first reactions are slightly mixed/closer to positive.

Ya from the reactions I read no one was head over heels it was more of mostly "it looked better than I expected but not amazing". I am still optimistic and really hope it's good.

Sounds positive.

Kinnaman is fast becoming one of my favourite actors.

As a huge fan of the original, I'm hopeful this will be good and from the reactions to the footage, this new take on RoboCop may actually succeed... even with a PG-13. Fingers crossed.

Speaking of the pretty-much-confirmed PG-13 rating, in the end, I don't think a movie like this has to be as violent or gory as the first film. The original film works so well and I love everything about it, including the violence. However, from everything we know about this new take on RoboCop, this really will be a different spin on the story of a man striped on his humanity and rebuilt as a not really a machine but as a control product. I just hope the main focus is on the story, the characters, the structure and the tone.

Let's hope this is a pleasant surprise like Dredd, and not a letdown like the new Total Recall.

So apparently from what I read in a panel recap: Murphy isn't shot, he's blown up in a car bomb

The footage they showed sounds simple but effective, there's time for money-shot's later.

Just that quick footage tease that says to unsure fans "See everyone! This doesn't look so bad after all!"

Sounds okay to me.

The original had a few ridiculous scenes including Murphy being shot... and of course the toxic waste melting guy.

the toxic waste scene is truly disgusting to me to this day haha.

Pg-13? Man that really annoys me part of the appeal of the original robocop was the shocking and over the top violence to hear we won't be seeing that is very disappointing.

Neat little video I stumbled across. It appears Robo's visor lights up when he takes aim:

Sounds like it, though it could be a case of the cutting of the trailer making it appear so when in fact it isn't the case. I can say that if they have gone thi route in the final cut, then it is different from the leaked draft.
