That's why i have no faith in Joel Silver's 'trilogy' idea for his Escape from NY. It's the SAME mentality.

That is a common problem. Either they use everything interesting in the first film, and the sequel becomes a bit of a cash-in (Into Darkness). Or they first film is made withe the anticipation of actually trying to do something interesting later.

By the way I really like Into Darkness, but on repeat viewings it doesn't really hold up.

'Into Darkness' felt small as heck didn't it? I even preferred the cinematography from the first film. JJ wasn't invested.

At least robot fans have some other cool stuff to look forward to..

It's the "tentpole" mentality. Going into a remake/reboot franchise with the predetermined outlook that it will lead to sequels, merchandise and lots of tie-ins. That stuff needs to be earned. It's like they're setting themselves up for failure
True. Something like the Dragon sequel feels far more earned, substantial and nature in its approach, even with its self-contained first film.

It definitely feels small. It is strange because it is trying to be more personal, but the story they went with is only personal for the audience who understands Khan.

Yup. Exactly.

That's why I've gotta give props to Stallone. He finally made Rambo and Rocky sequels that were in vein of the originals after spending years going the Hollywood route with the characters. And instead of continuing to try to cash in on the characters he launched the Expendables franchise so mainstream movie lovers can get 80s styled stuff without continuing to tarnish classic franchises

Interesting with Rocky that he actually retconned his own franchise, thus eliminating Rocky 5 from the canon. Kinda.

Hm. I never saw it as a retcon but I'll have to rewatch to be sure. What did it change?

The son right? In Rocky 5? Didn't he have a mental disorder? And it vanished in Rocky 6?

Really? I don't remember that. I thought he was just a punk kid in 5

I swear to God his kid was autistic in the fifth movie.

Nah you're just remembering wrong. He was a normal kid in 5

don't worry, we all want to forget that movie

Honest question: How many of you guys go into a genre movie like this and one of the first things you think is "I want a sequel"?

Not really. Sly in an interview tried to explain how V still fits within the continuity and why Rocky acts like Fred Flintstone for a majority of the film. Basically that Rock was essentially suffering from post-concussion sydrome for a majority of the film and that doctors misdiagnosed him because in the early 90s there wasn't enough research on head injuries and concussions.

Plus the fact that by Rocky Balboa he's living a rather modest life, etc. definitely suggests that Rocky V is still considered canon.

As far as the son? In V he was basically having daddy issues and lashing out by hanging out with a tough crowd. And no, he didn't have a mental disorder. Haha.

$20m for the 4 day weekend should happen, even with the poor numbers.
It'll be lucky to crack $19 million from the estimates I saw. $17-18 is more in line with predictions.

Disappointing but I kept my expectations in check because of the long history this film has in getting out to theaters. Still don't know what I'm going to think of it yet but the critics and audience have spoken and I'll be waiting for the Netflix release instead.

Can I ask where? Because I am reading $22-25m for the 4 day weekend.

I see what happened. The numbers I read were the weekend numbers, not the 4 day weekend numbers total.
