Surely we don't need the spin-offs to be massive moneyspinners. They just need to be profitable, good movies and well received by fans and critics. If they make tons of money, then great. But as long as they make a profit and are good movies, they have done their job. That's the case with The Wolverine - it didn't do that well in the US but it has made money overall.
The other thing is that Fox has already announced Wolverine 3 and X Force, so we ARE getting these spin-offs or lead-in movies. It's no longer just a possibility that can be debated, it's a fact.
We also got an announcement/report for X-Men Origins: Magneto, Deadpool and even Young X-Men. Those films didn't see the day of light.
If Fox managed to put those in limbo (Deadpool) or managed to move from another project, X-Force being released is not certain at all. We don't even have a release date for that and 2015/2016 is starting to get crowded. By the way, Disney just booked the memorial weekend of 2016.
And yes we don't need every film to earn more than 500 million dollars but the studio/producers haven't thought of spending $50 million in a smaller X-Men film? Is that gonna change in the future when the other studios are releasing bigger films?
