I do wonder if BC made a significant difference in that overseas. If so it would bode well for Dr. Strange.

i do think BC had alot to do with the overseas money look at this one not doing that well and the 1st one

STAR TREK BEYOND debuted in China with $31.3M this weekend--107% higher than STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS.

I definitely hope this film isn't a failure. Kind of sad to see so many strong summer films from this yeat bombing even more than the likes of Terminator Genisys.

I can't believe the marketing team dropped the ball so hard. Skyfall milked the hell out of the 50 year anniversary and made over a billion because of it. How many people even knew this year was Star Trek's 50 year anniversary?

:down

Not till now lol.

Happy birthday Star Trek!
Here's a f***ing big fat box office crap for ya

On this day in 1966, Star Trek made its television debut:

I said this before but I highly feel it had to do with the fact that ST is split between companies on film and on TV now.

This is technically the 50th anniversary of the TV series and maybe Paramount just wanted to be petty?

It's unbelievably petty but also sounds believable.

"Well, if we can't get the profits for the whole cake then f*** it. We'll half-ass our half. Someone will buy it. S***."

I mean did Paramount really bring their A-game for The First Avenger when it was clear that would be the last Marvel film they release?

So there really is NOTHING for the big 50 is there? Spent all of their time tweeting about it.

Seeing all the clips from the original TV show over the past few days has made me really hope that the new series gets back to the early basic premise of exploration. Hopefully we'll learn more about the new show soon.

In previous years for previous anniversaries, there was much more made of the occasion. For the 50th you'd think someone would make more of a song and dance about it. Seems really quite pathetic actually.

A tv special with a sneak peek at the Discovery build up would have worked.

It's bad to see how well Doctor Who is doing in keeping the franchise fresh unlike Trek.

I really don't think it would have mattered what weekend. They didn't even mention it. Bond did it so well.

Bond was like people who tell everyone it's their 50th birthday and throw a party and invite everyone. Star Trek was like those people who don't want anyone to know it's their 50th birthday and want to keep it low profile because it's just another day to get through.

The Trek anniversary was mentioned lots of places last night, including all the news broadcasts I watched. The Decades TV network ran some special programming.

If they'd released it this weekend and made something out of it, it might have made more money. But they wanted those Summer action movie bucks I guess.

I'd like to be optimistic about Discovery but I think the fact that people will have to pay to watch it is going to cripple its ratings.

I can't help but worry that Discovery is pretty much set up for failure even it it's fantastic.

It would've been pretty risky. September is not considered a big month for opening those types of movies.

That is very true.
As disappointing as the box office was for Beyond, Paramount was wise to move it from its original release date July 8.
it would have been up gobbled up by The Secret Life of Pets.
So, as bad as it is, it could have been far worse.
