The Avengers The Avengers Box-Office Prediction Thread - Part 1

Abomination is more powerful than anyone in The Avengers though, save Thor and possibly Loki in terms of overall power.

Yeah, but they didn't utilize Abom and Hulk on the scale we are gonna get to see Hulk in TA. It's gonna make all the difference to see Hulk not constrained to two sets for his fight. That really makes it seem like a small scale in TIH. Avengers won't have that problem.

Good point :word:

I swear I didn't even know that was one of his catch phrases until a few years ago.

It's too early to tell for me. If people love this movie and flock back again and tell their friends, it could surpass expectations. A $350M domestic tally and $750M international gross isn't out of the question.

Those numbers should be the floor, at this point. After all the marketing, anything less would be disappointing.

I'm a bit surprised really..i didnt think people would be lining up to sit in a theatre for close to 10 straight hrs of movies prior to a midnight showing of another one..ah well, this can only mean good things

I'm not. I went to one of these things for LOTR. It was the extended editions for Fellowship and The Two Towers, before we became the first on the Eastern seaboard to see Return of the King. And everything was sold out for this event across the country within the first two weeks when they went on sale. This was an event that covered probably close to or just over 12 hours of movie sitting. Fan loyalty cannot be denied!

I remember when Harry Potter pulled the same thing, I wonder how great that one did.

Agreed, although the floor for world wide gross for The Avengers is 800 million for me.

Forget what I said, turns out school holidays finish the week before it opens down here. I am baffled as to why they are releasing it earlier overseas then.
Is not the Euro cup happening this year?

An industry analyst has predicted that The Avengers could set an opening weekend record in North America.

With demand now for The Avengers officially not just high, but fanatical, the movie's box-office prospects are not just great, but perhaps epic.

Exhibitor Relations analyst Jeff Bock says it's "entirely possible" that the Robert Downey Jr.-led Avengers could top The Dark Knight for bragging rights as the biggest-opening superhero movie ($158.4 million).

Bock foresees a scenario where The Avengers defeats The Dark Knight, and tops Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, which, with a $169.2 million Friday-Sunday debut last year, is Hollywood's all-time opener, but only hangs onto the record until The Dark Knight Rises opens July 20.

I'm more interested in what industry experts are predicting. The above article gives an indication of what insiders and experts think of The Avengers' prospects. One has to presume that they have some early stats on ticket sales, tracking data and the like that informs their analyses, rather than relying on mere guesswork. The expert predictions will roll in from now until the movie debuts. When/if Paul Dergarabedian, the industry's foremost prognosticator, weighs in with his prediction we'll get a real idea of how The Avengers is going to do.

As far as domestic take goes, that's generally what analysts are predicting (maybe on the low end). Foreign is a real wild card though. No Marvel Studios film has done more than 311 M oversees which isn't all that great. Even if it makes a leap to 500 M, 1 billion world wide is still a stretch. I'm thinking 850 - 900 M

It sounds realistic that both Avengers and TDKR could beat HP's record (by a small amount if it happens). But Avengers would get the chance to do it first so at least have the record for a couple of months (if not longer).

Yeah I can see that but i think with the 3d tickets it should boost Foreign up to about 400 to 450

The way everyone who has seen it has been coming out with their minds blown, I think there will be a extremely positive word of mouth effect that many may not be anticipating.

This is mooe overseas friendly than the other Marvel films I think. Megasequel, epic scope, disaster film & extremely effects-heavy.

Not to mention that foreign box office loves 3D movies, and I think this movie will deliver despite not being shot in 3D cameras.

Yeah, I think they love watching 'big' films in 3D even after all the **** 3D films in the last few years.

Well I can't speak for everyone, but this is the case for the closest cinema to me: If it is available in 3D they will only show it in 3D. So you just can't avoid it. I would if I could.

I had to pay extra to go Gold Class to see Thor in 2D. You can't escape 3D here. It's not a case of loving 3D, it's a case of nothing else being available.

That's not the case where I live. While we do pay a premium because we're close to a major city, there are 2D and 3D options for all major releases. It costs more for 3D, of course, but the IMAX prices are really ridiculous. IMAX is $14.50 for a matinee ticket, $16.50 for later showings. Am I going to see The Avengers in IMAX? You bet. But I already feel like a chump and it's still three weeks away.

My tickets were £17.90 each!

Heh. Be lucky you don't live in Australia. $25 just for a normal ticket at both of the cinema complexes near me. That's a matinee price. $37 for Gold Class in the evenings. Can't imagine what they'd charge if they had an IMAX screen.

Good Lord! Those prices are ghastly! I guess I have to stop whining about the high price of tickets now.

Cost me $23.50 for my ticket. I can pick up 2 DVD's for under that.

And that's what annoys me. Thor was a nightmare film to see in 2D. 5 cinemas within 30 mins of me and only one was showing it in 2D and was only screening one session. I lost my **** that day.
