Because the movie itself is good, like the book (apparently, I haven't read the book) was

Yeah, but people haven't seen it and thus it's not WOM that's causing this but rather some bizarre hype machine.

If this opened reasonably big and then had a small drop then I can say it's WOM because the movie is good. But this high tracking was happening before even critic's reviews.

It's quite an anomaly.

Saying Hunger Games looks like a sci fi channel movie is just as silly as saying Avengers looks like a TV show

I'm not saying cheesy bad CGI...but the overall look is like that to me.

People read the books and fell in love with them. You could tell this was going to break out since last year. But this past month or two WOM on the books has really been spreading (due to the impending movie release) and hype hit a fever pitch accordingly.

In the end congratulations to Lionsgate and I'm happy for all the fans of the book that they are getting an adaptation that pleases them.

Let's hope the same turns out true for fans of THE AVENGERS when the time comes.

Agreed. Why do people have to make ridiculous claims in an attempt to hammer their point in? Why not just "I don't think it looks good" or " the trailers didn't convince me to see it"? Making silly claims make you, in turn, look silly.

Hunger Games is going to rake in some serious dough. I went to a noon showing today, and the theatre is typically pretty quiet around that time. It was jam packed today and the rest of the showings for the day save for 2 were sold out.

The movie itself was pretty good, one of the better adaptations i've seen. Lawrence does a very good job as Katniss.

Oh, and it was fun seeing a couple of Cap alums in there. Abraham Erskine and Armin Zola together again..lol

Those other two screenings will probably be sold out too.
Good to hear .

I'll just stick with The Running Man.

According to Deadline.com,
It looks like THG will make somewhere between 60-75 million dollars for today alone .

Boxoffice.com says Avengers'll make 370 million domestic.

Also, why are we talking about Hunger Games?

because its the next biggest movie to hit this year after John Carter and before Avengers, and it looks like the movie for Avengers to beat (released this year thus far). Plus its a box office thread....so comparisons are inevitable. lol.

on another note...do people think Avengers will hit 1 billion? I would say definately min 800 mil and max 900 mill.

How is this a silly claim??? I'm being honest. That's the vibe the trailers have given me. I'm not trying to put down the movie. I saw nothing in the trailers that indicated a big-budget theatrical blockbuster film; it looked like something I would see on the sci-fi channel. Sorry, but I don't think I'm being silly.

It's like people who say Contraband wasn't a cinema movie; it was like a tv movie. Something I've heard from people on the net and in real life. The trailers gave off that vibe too.

You're putting too much emphasis on a film's look. If spectacle is the only thing that sold movies, then any Roland Emmerich or Terrence Malick film would be the biggest box office grossers of all time.

Hell, the Twilight series looks like it could be a series on the CW, and look at how huge it is. It's huge because of the fanbase and the character relationships; doesn't matter what the film *looks* like.

This is the box office thread. You know, the place to talk about box office

How the BO market is shaping up in the weeks leading up to the Avengers' release couldn't be more relevant

That's fine, but people are saying I'm silly for making an honest observation.

Anyway like I said I'm very happy for fans of THG that they are getting a movie that they like and does the books justice.

Agreed.

It's very important that the BO on the whole be a healthy one, with the general public wanting to go to the theatre.

agreed

I hope that Titans also does well as it is spaced far enough away from the Avengers to do no damage and show interest in action genre films

I think it's great that the spring has the Lorax, THG and Titans to serve up.... gets people into the idea of going out to the movies again

and like I said they are spring block busters Avengers still gets to kick off the 'Summer start"

^^^ Agreed.

I also hope that Wrath of the Titans is actually good enough to warrant success.

The original Clash of the Titans was my first fav movie and the first movie that I saw more than once in cinema. I liked the remake but I acknowledge that it's not great (not crap like some people say though). They made changes to story to distinguish this from the original, but they all fail and make the story and character motivations a muddled mess.

That said i'm still there opening day for WotT.

Well, the bar has been set. Hunger Games made $68M+ on it's opening day and Box Office Mojo ae predicting that it will make between $135M - $160M for the weekend.

http://boxofficemojo.com/news/?id=3400&p=.htm

What has been the prediction for The Avengers opening weekend?

Boxoffice.com predicted 155 million for Avengers. Taking into account they were about 10 million short on both their Thor and Captain America predictions, I'd say about 150-160 is a good guess.

Finishing off with a solid 370 million domestic (also from Boxoffice.com), all this needs is a good 630 million overseas push to make it to a billion, and two million after that to beat out TDK.

In fact, I'm going to order my RPX ticket in an hour or so, just so I don't get sold out just in case. Then I'll see the movie again on the 5th using my Regal Pass after I take the SATs. :D

Have been scanning other sites for opinions on THG; quite interestingly I have heard other people comment on the mediocre quality CGI making the movie look like something from the sci-fi channel.

All I'm gonna say is, I'm pretty The Avengers is going to be much bigger than The Hunger Games.

*shrugs*
