No it's a blatant young adult novel. The themes and characterizations in the books are focused on being accessible to teens.

*shrugs* Well, okay. I haven't read it but that wouldn't surprise me.

If THG makes a 150m+ OW it will be close. Good for THG, I am glad it doing well, I really enjoyed THG. It is a good movie.

I wasn't talking about the opening, I was talking about the overall world wide gross which is more important than "opening numbers".

I enjoyed The Hunger Games as well and I thought it was a great movie, it's NOTHING like Twighlight in my opinion.

$155! Wow! Again congrats to Lionsgate.

Hope this means the North American BO is a healthy one and that THE AVENGERS trailer got a lot more exposure this weekend!

Seriously. It hasn't looked good for over a year =\

And Lionsgate REALLY needed it after last year's three flops

It's nice to see a non-sequel open so well as non-sequels were not doing well last year at all.

What were LGF's flops last year?

It's amazing that LGF got this franchise rather than othet bigger name studios. WB and others must be kicking themselves.

Not to mention LGF just bought Summit last year. Twilight money + Hunger Games

Boxoffice.com Forum users are predicting around 800-1 billion for this. Not sure how accurate they've been in the past, though, so I'll check.

I cannot see it though. The overseas opening wasn't huge and there will probably be a significant (approx. 60%) dropoff in the second domestic weekend.

Yeah, for all its OW fireworks, THG is essentially an American phenomenon. Unless WOM starts getting overseas crowds curious, the domestic and OW takes are probably going to represent the bulk of THG's income. Which means that it looks fantastic on the front end, but if OS sales remain puzzled and lackluster, I see THG topping out around 750 mil WW.

Great opening, but it needs an overseas presence.

I'm guessing just a little more than $347,227,300 domestic overall maybe even $400,000,000 (but I see that as max). That's Iron Man 1's earnings (higher than Iron Man 2), then you have to factor in that Thor, Hulk, and Captain America probably didn't have exactly the same audience. It would pull in additionally from those who may have not seen Iron Man and a different property instead. Also Whedon fans (Buffy, Angel, etc.) who may not have seen any of them. I guess we'll see what happens with 'Cabin in the Wood' slightly.

Since we are talking about other movies here, has anyone seen The Raid: Redemption? holy hell that movie was badass, i see why it got so many rave reviews. I'm mad it didnt get a wide release. Its basically everything The Expendables could and should have been. The fight choreography is some of the best i"ve seen in years. Makes me wonder why more CBM productions dont get some of these foreign fight choreographers to work with them, cuz what those guys do with minimal budgets blows what we do here out f the water. Guys like Cap and Batman are supposed to be some of the worlds greatest hand-to-hand fighters and martial artists, but their combat scenes in the movies are so bland and underwhelming. They've got the stories/characterization down pat, the only thing mediocre are the actual fight scenes.

^And it'll make all of ten dollars in North America, or at least that's what it'll seem like. I suppose it's natural to have a lot of chop-socky type of action(and have it done well) when all your actors are trained martial artists. But you get away from Asian cinema and then actors aren't trained that way usually. And that stuff takes a long time to really learn to do well. Plus American audiences have a history of preferring bare-knuckle brawling and slug fests to obviously highly choreographed martial arts fighting. It's just more in our cultural blood. That's my best guess, anyway.

It's not about style, it's about choreography. Getting choreographers from Asia doesn't mean the fighting will start resembling Wuxia. It just means it'll be well done, unlike the utter ****e served up in Nolan's Batman films.

I even thing $750 mil is an overestimate; It'll probably be about $600 mil....which is still SPECTACULAR for a $70 mil budget non-sequel movie!!!

You need to stop thinking of THE AVENGERS as a sequel only.

It's an EVENT MOVIE that has a life of it's own. Honestly I'm sensing a phenomenon; wait and see.

I've heard lots of good things about this movie and I can't wait to see it. Unfortunately it probably will not get a cinema release in my country.

One of my few gripes with CA:TFA was the lack of truly spectacular fight choreography. Like you said CAPTAIN AMERICA is supposed to be the best fighter in the MARVEL UNIVERSE and the movie just didn't show it. It was one of those times I wish MARVEL STUDIOS had stepped in and demanded from Joe Johnston.

I REALLY hope JW rectifies this in THE AVENGERS!!!

Batman also. His tdk franchise fight scenes are unbelievably stale and uninspiring.

Unfortunately, I haven't seen The Raid yet. But the previews are astounding, and the word-of-mouth is deafening from those who have seen it. This movie needs a LOT more buzz; it's become the gold standard of action movies in recent memory.

Exactly..i"m not expecting Chris Evans to turn into Donnie Yen. I just want well done choreography. The Raid has no hyper-stylized Crouching-Tiger type fighting. Its as bare-knuckle and gritty as you can get. The difference is, the moves are quicker, better paced, and do a great job at showing the characters skill level. Thats what i want from these current CBM's. When the video game trailers for Batman and Cap have better looking combat scenes than their respective movies, you know theres a problem.

Pretty much.

I mean, the Hong Kong scene in TDK was sooooooo bad. And the thing is, i'm sure they were doing a little homage to Hong Kong cinema with that whole segment. Ironically enough they ****ed up the fight choreography so badly, it was like an amateurs attempt at Hong Kong style cinema. I remember watching that scene and honestly thinking "Did they let this into the movie by mistake?" lol.

Well, largely they've chosen to put most of their eggs in the character/story basket rather than in the action choreography one. I happen to think that's the more important of the two but it'd be nice if they learned to master both. This is probably why I prefer characters who are much more powerful as it is easier to separate their kind of action(which the HK guys don't specialize in) from basic hand to hand fighting that we should see in a Cap or Batman or DD film.

The hollywood films of recent memory that have great martial arts are the Holmes films. I like the way the fights are an extension of Holmes' personality and character. How he deduces how the fight is gonna play out before it actually happens. And the final showdown with Moriarty, where he could also do the same thing as Holmes was just fantastic.

It was BRILLIANT!!! Especially in combination with the verbal chess match before.
