Man the chick playing hill is hot. Not sure how I'm supposed to believe all this hot women are military career females. Guess that's hollywood.

Yep.

Spy thrillers like Bond and Bourne give off a distinctive image when arriving to the appearance of spies and government agents -- most of them in reality are chubby or fat, unattractive, repellent, etc.

This film is virtually Transformers 4, and it appears like Grade-A bulls**t. However, the general audience doesn't care, especially teenagers. If it looks 'awesome', then you can expect fellow peers to line up and buy tickets to the show on Friday or Saturday night.

The SFX and massive-scale aerial/naval battles are what the studio heads are banking on, and they just might get it. This movie will be released two weeks after The Avengers event. It's not a question of IF Battleship will cause a dent, but HOW much damage will it do to The Avengers?

In my personal opinion, I believe it won't dethrone The Avengers but Battleship could certainly take a mid-sized chunk no matter how poorly received the flick will be.

Battleship can only be appreciated as action-driven entertainment spectacle. Stuff blows up over and over (and yet Avengers makes it look tame!).

I enjoyed Battleship for explosive spectacle fun and, to be fair, Kitsch was better in this than in John Carter while Rihanna slotted into her role well without seeming like some pop singer trying to act.

So you've already seen Battleship? Do you think it will be a serious competition against The Avengers?

If people go see a film for Rihanna they should hang themselves.

Oh, don't be a snob. There's nothing wrong for people flocking to see a movie just because of someone in it. Hell, I was going to write off GI Joe 2, until I saw Bruce Willis in the trailer, now it's one of my most anticipated movies of the year.

You would see a movie just for Bruce Willis?

Yeah? I think people are crazy that they won't see a movie with Bruce Willis. He's like the ultimate badass. There are few people I will go out of my way to see in a movie that I normally wouldn't, Bruce is one, Russell Crowe another, and Charlize Theron.

Johnson is a bonus for the movie. Either way, I liked the first GI Joe, so I probably would have gone see the second regardless, but I know many people who hated the first one, are going to be checking the one coming out because of Bruce.

I love G.I.Joe (cartoon series, toys, comics, etc) but I hated the first one with a passion of a thousand sun. :cmad: It's nice to see Willis in the sequel but that isn't enough for me to check it out, unless the reviews are universally positive.

ROTF, DOTM, and OST were sequels to successful franchises. The better comparison for Battleship would probably be Clash of the Titans.

I could give a crap about the critics. I went to see Drive, the trailer looked good, the reviews were through the roof, but I ended up board to death. I went to see the highly acclaimed Warhorse, that movie was pretty terrible (The Black Stallion and Black Beauty are ten times better) and I just had to role my eyes at the ridiculousness of the whole thing. Critically acclaimed and oscar winner The Hurt Locker, they only good thing about that movie was the two lead performances, but from a military standpoint, it's horribly done.

There are a few critics that I really care about, such as Peter Traves from Rolling Stone, Moriarty from AICN, and Devin from CHUD, among others. I'd usually check their reviews first before I make a decision whether to watch a movie that I'm unsure about. G.I.Joe didn't get good reviews, but I watched it anyway and ended up hating it. I'm not going to give #2 the benefit of the doubt next time.

Except Battleship is on route to outgross Clash, and it's sequel, combined. Why? Because Hasbro and Universal modeled Battleship after The Transformers franchise.

I agree with you on that warhorse78 -- I never found the intrigue with Drive. The 'climax' was incredibly underwhelming.

Drive was a good film, but I didn't find anything special about it.

It's on track to make 300 mil foreign, which is the same as Clash. But domestic might not be as kind, especially with The Avengers there to steal its thunder.

You're assuming too much, and underestimating the competition. Half this thread expected Battleship to flop (and so did film experts), and yet it's now predicted to make 300 million in the international market (unknown variables in Russia and China -- stock and box office totals could rise further).

Domestically, it's a toss up, but the popularity of the board game and the Transformers-esque SFX and action sequences could provide an X-Factor. Quite simply, it's alittle too early to count out Battleship. Thus far, it's exceeding expectations.

The fact that Devin liked it(somewhat..."that'll do Joss, that'll do") says a lot to me.

Yeah, Devin isn't a critic that is easy to please, so when he actually likes a movie, I pay attention.

Battleship is already on general release in the UK. I couldn't get to the media screening, but I went with a friend to see it the day it released (we decided to go to the movies and it was a toss-up between that and Hunger Games).

Battleship is a lot of fun, and a ton of **** blows up. Not as much humour as the Avengers, and obviously it didn't have the geek-out moments as it's not the same sort of film adaptation with a devoted geek following. And more crap blows up in The Avengers, for sure.

I think Battleship will compete against the Avengers, yes. The fanboys/girls will definitely aim for Avengers, the mainstream will be more divided - it will be down to the TV trailers, billboards and press reviews to help sway their decision.

I'm suprised more stuff blows up in The Avengers, because the action looked much bigger in the trailers for Battleship than the trailers for The Avengers.

Although I shouldn't be too suprised, The Avengers does have Thor, Hulk, Iron Man, Loki as well as his army of aliens in it.

It just felt to me that there was a lot more collateral damage in the Avengers. The destruction was monumental.

I will say I'm not entirely convinced by the way some of the earlier battles were orchestrated. There was obviously a need for action ahead of the final showdown, which obviously meant a lot of infighting (on a grand scale).

What do you mean you're not entirely convinced by the way some of the earlier battles are orchestrated?
