The Avengers The Avengers Box-Office Prediction Thread - Part 1

Then would you have removed any action leading up to the third act? Because the way Whedon did it the team will not come together until the last 1/3 of the film, and there's no way they'd start fighting Loki's Army from the get-go.

No. Now you're leaping to conclusions and going to extremes. I wouldn't have removed all the first and second act action, but (if i had the luxury) I would perhaps reshape or modify a couple of parts.

Of course they wouldn't fight Loki's army from the get-go, so there had to be other conflicts. In my view, not all of it felt natural.

That's my view anyway.

You can't make everybody happy with these sorts of movies. There will always be somebody nitpicking something. And with a movie this anticipated, people will dig deep to find flaws to exploit.

You can't make everybody happy with ANY sort of movie.

There will be likes and dislikes, even for the most acclaimed movie.

So it seems like a billion+ dollars is in the bag now right? Like I've been saying all along, it doesn't matter how much the previous marvel movies have made because if The Avengers is as mind blowing as I thought it would be than it's going to make it's money on it's own merits.

Fanboy reviews on Twitter mean nothing, it's the general audience reaction to a film that matters.

That being said I still see 155mil as the best case for The Avenger's opening weekend but I'm predicting like 145mil.

But not everyone who saw the film early is a fanboy. And pretty much everyone loved it. I just heard that lady that interviewed the cast say that she's not a comic fan at all, and she loved it.

yep, there was an older lady with me who was being interviewed at my screening. Said her grandson dragged her to the movie but in the end she thought it was absolutely wonderful.

That's the difference between this movie and THG. Yeah the latter had a huge opening but most people who saw it were not blown away. This baby is blowing the minds of everybody who has seen it, CBM fan or not.

It's also the difference between this and the rest of the marvel films

Well also the difference between this and most films, period.

If it's as good as people are saying and a definite step up from previous Marvel Studio releases, then hopefully this is the new standard going forward. No turning back.

That would be cool, but without Joss I just don't see it happening. I do think though that now that people have gotten a taste of what it's really supposed to be like that they'd take the hint moving forward.

I'm sure the audience will.

This is my hope.

There was a lot of physical clashing between the characters. I began to be aware of it happening with regularity, and to me to began to feel a little forced on occasion. But it is action-packed as a result, and that was thrilling to watch.

Obviously the film is about the formation of the team, and the big showdown climax doesn't happen until the last act, so in order to have action before that, it meant the heroes themselves were engaged in a lot of clashing. Conversations boiled over into full-on throwdowns a lot, and I mean a lot...

Sounds like a Howard Hawks movie; me like it.

Knowing Joss, i guess these people comunicate as well with words as with fists; meaning, these are not just fights; they serve a purpose. Like Hawks. Or in the comics themselves.

Just a-suposing. I havent seen it yet. :yay:

The part I bolded is actually not true. The members of the team argued several times, but they never actually came to blows because of the conversations themselves.
In the one pivotal team argument scene, they did not come to blows at all but were hit by an explosion caused by a mind-controlled Hawkeye. Banner's transformation and subsequent attack on Romanoff resulted from the explosion. Thor attacked Hulk to save Natasha. Natasha went after Hawkeye to stop him and break Loki's control. Tony and Steve actually ended up working together to save the Helicarrier. And in case you didn't notice, the entire argument was caused and/or escalated by Loki using his staff, which was in the lab with the team and may well have contained the Mind Gem.

Oh, and in the big three-way battle on the mountaintop, Iron Man attacked Thor without uttering a single word at first. There was banter during the fight, but no convo leading up to it. Cap tried to reason with Thor but that was after the battle had commenced. Hence, no conversation leading to a throw-down there.

Hulk did sucker-punch Thor during the final battle, but that was just Big Green's way of saying "Job well done.":woot:

But maybe there is a conversation/fight scene that I'm just not remembering now. Feel free to remind me of it in detail, if you can.

How can you possibly (still) believe that people were *not* "blown away" by Hunger Games? Right now, it's chalking up its FOURTH straight week at #1, was at $322 mill *last* week, and is already in the Top 25 grossing (domestic) movies of all time. And there is *nothing* that is tracking right now between it and May 4 to slow it down. There is every indication that it won't be dethroned from the #1 spot until Avengers, at which time THG will have held the #1 spot for six straight weeks. Six. Straight. Weeks. Think about that for a minute.

Curiously, HG didn't seem to resonate as well with the foreign audience, in stark contrast to it's inexplicable domestic success as compared to its contemporaries.

Too bad it didnt make so much overseas

What's that got to do with it holding the #1 domestic slot for 6 weeks in a row?

Shadowlord inferred that people who saw THG weren't blown away, but a 6-week win streak says otherwise. THG got legs. Long ones.

Nothing. My too bad was a genuine "too bad" lol
Wonder why it didnt appeal to the international crowd. Besides the book being more popular here

It's still too early to really assess THG's overseas. Boxofficemojo shows only 2-3 weeks of returns --- from 3/22 to 4/1 or 4/8. Check back in a couple of months for a more complete breakdown of the international percentage.

Well I'm glad to see good movies doing big business. If the avengers is as good as everyone says, I hope it does even bigger busines. Hopefully it will show people that great films can make a ton at the box office too.

I agree with cherokee, people shouldn't belittle THG in any way. It could stay on top until May 4th in the states, and that's a massive accomplishment.

hmm, i guess so. Was wondering if there was another reason though
