The Avengers The Avengers Box-Office Prediction Thread - Part 1

Transformers ROTF had horrible reviews and word-of-mouth but it still grossed 900 million worldwide. What kept the film on top for several weeks? SFX and battling robots.

Battleship features Bay-esque SFXs and large scale action sequences. That alone could prove to a successful formula at the box office.

That doesn't make it good, and it doesn't make Bayformers good either.

Bayformer formula = soft core porn for the pre-pubescent boys mixed with loud obnoxious effects, dialogue that wouldn't pass 3rd grade reading level, and lots of shaky camera stuff.

It being number one right now only represents only the lack of choice at the box office. Some people might see battleship as a typical summer popcorn movie, I see it as the depravity of Hollywood of producing anything remotely entertaining, that hasn't already been done to death.

I agree. Battleship is just the representation of the cultural wasteland that is approaching, or already has arrived. I can't honestly watch a film that is solely dependent on visuals/SFX and action sequences. However, these type of films are on the rise nowadays. I sense Battleship will only continue that trend with it's successes.

I'm not saying Bayformers are the staple of film making. ROTF and DOTM were terrible, terrible movies. Yet, those two films nearly grossed two billion dollars combined.

You heard of inflation mate? :woot:
Oh , I totally agree with you about inflation,
But it would still take a MASSIVE amount of people buying tickets for one movie to make 200 million during a 3 day period .

Inflation makes a 200m dollar opening weekend inevitable at some point (probably sooner than we think) but I'd be astonished if TDKR got there.

As for Battleship, it doesn't strike me as much of a threat. Though it has the ingredients, for some reason I just don't see it hitting that big in the US. And Men in Black 3 looks atrocious. All in all, the 3 weeks after TA could be far worse considering it kicks off the summer.

If The Avengers is really as great as it appears to be, I don't believe that any movie will be able to seriously contest it in the box office.

Yeah I hear you, it makes me wonder about the human race. ;)

It's tough to call. Right now the competition is weak in the international market (until late April arrives) so Battleship could rack up 250 million easily. Stateside, I expect the film to slightly gross a bit more with 350 million (total duration). Overall, I expect Battleship to gross 600 million worldwide, at the very least.

It'll be interesting to see where Battleship stands after April 24th.

Battleship is not going to make $350m in th US. It'll be lucky to hit $150m.

Off topic, I really wish people would stop putting new Avengers clips in their avatars. It's easy to avoid the spoilery threads, but spoilery avatars... It's like "Hey what's that? *looks closer* Ah ****! Look away!!!" And you can't unsee it. :(

I think Battleship looks horrible and so does everyone I know, but I never believed it would be a "flop" simply because the scale of the action looks HUGE.

People have to understand that the GA doesn't think like most fans, if it looks "cool" to them then they will continue thinking so until they're proven otherwise.

Personally, I just want to see Battleship for the hilarity factor.
I mean, the alien "Missles " look like the pegs from the game!
It is going to be a laugh riot .

With the Avengers coming out 2 weeks before (in the US), what are people going to go see?
The big action/alien invasion flick with (so far) glowing reviews?
or
The big action/alien invasion flick that's getting poor reviews?

That's why it was moved up internationally, so it can make some bank before Avengers comes out.

I've seen a couple of posters with the clip of Thor deflecting energy blast from the aliens, I know it officially released but I don't want to see any of the action clips until I see the film.

So can you all please not use footage from video clips because some of us want the visuals to be saved for the actual film, I'd appreciate it alot.

How about a bout?

What frightens me is that Battleship could end being this year's Pirates, and gross a billion at the box office. The elements are certainly present. It's number one in the international market right now and it's yet to arrive stateside (where the greater potential lies for film due to the popularity of the board game).

Pirates had Depp as one of the most iconic characters in cinema history.

Battleship has... Taylor Kitsch... :funny:

True, if anything i think Rihanna will probably be the biggest draw of the movie. Still, i don't see it making over 600 million.

If I wanna see Rihanna's ass I'll just watch her music videos, she's sexy as hell but that's not a good enough reason for me to go see a film.

Very true. :funny:

Precisely our point.

This film is virtually Transformers 4, and it appears like Grade-A bulls**t. However, the general audience doesn't care, especially teenagers. If it looks 'awesome', then you can expect fellow peers to line up and buy tickets to the show on Friday or Saturday night.

The SFX and massive-scale aerial/naval battles are what the studio heads are banking on, and they just might get it. This movie will be released two weeks after The Avengers event. It's not a question of IF Battleship will cause a dent, but HOW much damage will it do to The Avengers?

In my personal opinion, I believe it won't dethrone The Avengers but Battleship could certainly take a mid-sized chunk no matter how poorly received the flick will be.

I still believe The Avengers will reach the billion dollar mark, however I won't be suprised if it doesn't because nothing's certain.

The Hobbit looks certain to score a billion. It basically has no competition and the fanbase is immensely large (like Potter's).

Other than that, I not so certain about any summer blockbuster hitting the billion mark. Summer 2012 is stacked.
