interesting point, in fact it was said that Clara was suppose to fall in the canyon an die that day, Marty claimed to have heard the story's of this happening (the canyon was even named after her)
if it was a matter of him being predestined to go back and save her (then the canyon should never been named after her, and he should have never heard of that story)
although, I guess his memory of this story and the canyon name, may have only been memory's from the original timeline, and they had already set forth chain of events that altered history, so at the point that he is reading the Grave, the name of the Canyon may have also been changed already, and no-one else knows of that old story other then him
