Yeah sorry to quote from so far back
But the eyes themselves do still show a lot of emotion. Ledger's Joker, for instance seemed to have his eyes darting around a lot and narrowing which added a lot of nuance to the physical performance and really helped to bring the manic psychopath to life that little bit more.
That works for Joker due to the chaotic nature of his mind. Batman has always been more stoic.
Batman certainly puts on a front of being an emotionless tactician for the most part, but the emotional turmoil within bursts out quite often. Mosts comics depict him snarling into a villain's face at some point.
Which can be done via facial acting. We are kind of doing a disservice to the actor by making it seem as though the eyes are the end all be all for getting a convincing performance across. Good actors work within their confines.
I know the one thing that people are scared won't translate is the way Batman's eyes are able to naturally squint and take on different shapes. I think that's where contact lenses can come in.
But there is so much unknown in terms of how it will look, people are tentative. We have over 20 years of Batmen with exposed eyes on the big screen (not counting West), so it will be hard to deviate from that and win people over.
