There's nothing inherently wrong with a predictable story. It all boils down to the execution of said story.

The story may be somewhat predictable. So was BEGINS and THE DARK KNIGHT.

It's all about the themes, how they intersect with Batman's world, the exploration of concepts, and how its all executed.

Begins was, but I don't think TDK was. At least not to me.

You misunderstand me; Bruce is himself committing a crime by taking the wrap for Two Face's murders, but I don't think he would allow somebody else to commit the same crime, given his rigid views on justice.

It isn't always a crime to hit people, but that's by the by.

Oh, ok, fair enough.

Sure. It was also a giant coincidence, which is the point I'm trying to make.

And why can't it be a "twist of irony" that his last name is Strange, and he happens to become an obsessive, demented maniac?

If it's gonna be his actual surname, then it's strapped on irony. Completely different situation if it's a nick.

Re: Harvey, it's a real cruel twist of irony because the story established what kind of person Harvey is: good natured, but with an ugly side. No doubt he showed both sides to the MCU cops, hence the nickname.

I know Mark Millar propably can't be trusted on his, but we all know he sain on Twitter that he knew the villain(s) for TDKR AND that one of the villains had a run on the comics in the early 80's (if I remember correcly) that was one of his favorites. Did Strange have any notable storys then?

No matter which way you try to spin this, you're sounding a bit hypocritical. So the degree of irony is based on if it's a nickname or a surname?

Here's a question for you guys: How would you introduce Hugo Strange? As another party invovled in the manuhnt for Batman, or as a criminal mastermind responsible for the Rise of the Freaks?

Yeah. I personally fail to see how it being a nickname for Dent makes it any less ironic/coincidental. As far as I'm concerned, a name is a name.

Another party. Joker, and more technically Batman, is the one who's responsible for the rise of the freaks.

Strange is a psychiatrist the GPD brings in to help create a psychological profile for Batman, much like what the FBI does for serial killers. As the film progresses, we learn that Strange has been harboring an unhealthy and disturbing obsession with Batman for some time. Perhaps his apartment is littered with newspaper articles, photos, and hundreds of notebooks full of Strange's findings and theories.

In trying to create a psychological profile, Strange dons his own batsuit and takes to the rooftops of Gotham - trying to live Batman's life in order to build a better understanding of him. This then evolves into Strange flat-out wanting to replace Batman.

No, that's a very simplistic representation of what I'm saying. There's an interesting story behind the irony of Harvey's nick and his scarring. Whereas with Strange it's just lame strapped on irony. That's his name, it's just coincidence that he's a weirdo as well.

Maybe being "cursed" with the name Strange added to his psychosis?

Maybe he was tormented as a kid (just like Oswald Cobblepot, just like Jonathan Crane), who would reverse his name into the taunt "strange Hugo!"

There, now it's not a coincidence but a psychological motivator.

Now, when Nolan doesn't include that backstory into his characterization, just pretend it is. :woot:

Congratulations to DaCrissaMan and Batman-News.com!

I can't believe people have taken the realism ball and ran with it so far that Hugo Strange is now too cartoonish. You do realize there was a man with an impossible, IMPOSSIBLE disfiguration in the last movie?

He's just a bald man with a beard! That's it! Are bald men not allowed to have beards? You can't just post a picture with the most exaggerated expression as proof that he couldn't work on film. I could post a picture of Tim Sale's Joker, with his GIGANTIC TEETH, and be like "Do you really want to see this toothy ***** in a movie?!"

As far as the name goes, this can't be stressed enough - it's a real name. Strange is a real last name. If it's realistic enough for...ya know, reality!...it's real enough for a Batman movie.
Quiet, you. If anything, the realism arguments haven't gone far enough. A man in a batsuit is unrealistic. I don't want Batman in the next Batman movie, and nothing you can say will change my mind.

TDKR is basically outlined in the "Prey" graphic novel.
In it, batman is on the run from the cops. They employ the services of psychologist Professor Strange to track him down. While this is going on, Bats is himself trying to track down a sophisticated cat burgler who is causing major problems in the city. As things progress, this cat-burgler decides to amuse herself by showing up batman at every turn, driving him nuts and slightly seducing him. In the meantime, we begin to find out that Professor Strange has a mannequin for a girlfriend, swarms of cronies and a predeliction for genetically engineering superhuman criminal henchmen to do his bidding.

I swerved from the plot of prey a bit but all these elements exist in the comics as foundational elements of the characters Selina and Strange.

Just reading up about it on wiki, this bit in particular caught my attention:

He deduces the Batman's identity and plays psychologically with him by placing life-like mannequins of his parents in Wayne Manor with audio tapes.

I'd actually want to see that, very ****ed up and dark.

:funny:

[BLACKOUT]Life sized mannequins of his parents with tape recorders?[/BLACKOUT]

That would probably be unintentionally hilarious.

I know, right?
I'm pumped for Strange and Selina now. Her playing with his heart and Strange playing with his mind.
I'd also like to see the scene where he captures Selena and thinks he has her in custody before realizing it was her ploy to steal the batmobile. Can't remember which story arch that was.

Slippery little girl she is. And with Marion Cotillard's french accent?
This could very easily match TDK.

I'm rooting for Catwoman and Hugo Strange now.

Intorducing Penguin as the new crime-boss wouldn't hurt either. IMO, he's a better fit than Black Mask.

Is Tom Hardy Maxie Zeus?

No, he’s not. But what the hell, you know? I’m sure I can say that I “heard” he was from a “source” and it’ll soon be all over the Net.
Look, I’ve got all of your emails asking “Why no news on BOF?” You want to know why? Because I only run legit news, not BS and bunk.
Here’s the deal: The only person who knows who Tom Hardy is playing is Chris Nolan, David Goyer, Jonathan Nolan and a few -- and I mean few -- select others.
With that in mind, I recommend that you should be very, very leery in regards to any “scoop” or “inside information” coming from any website -- including BOF (and fake BOF’s too).
So, if you want Batman movie news from a website that has the respect of both Warner Bros. and those folks I mentioned above, you’ve found it. Call me arrogant all you want, but it’s the TRUTH. Now, if you want BS, well, you’ve got a lot of choices -- including fake BOF’s.

Jett also said this over on facebook...

An FYI regarding the Tom Hardy/Hugo Strange rumor: BOF's Mark Hughes has long suspected that Hardy might be playing that character in TDKR and has discussed it at length for weeks now. What I believe has happened is that a BOF Message Board lurker passed it along to other site's as "inside news" as it's being reported... EXACTLY as Mark hypothesized.

Like Jett's never posted any rumors on his site before.

Crissa, I know you'll be tempted to do so, but don't respond.

Jett does add though that he's not discounting Strange as a possibility, just that he thinks this news isn't reliable.

Now you know why I'm very, VERY of posting "news" that's sent to me. I literally get 100s of emails each day with "scoops." Mark could well be right, but you didn't see BOF post this did you? *shakes head*

Ahuh.

I forget. Who reported time and time again that Paul Bettany and Lachy Hulme were the frontrunners for The Joker? We heathens don't pride ourselves on long-term memories.
