The "Keep Hope Alive" (that the rights can revert back to Marvel) thread - Part 9

Talking about the fanfares before Marvel movies, the other studios used the original fanfare a decade before Marvel Studios started making movies, yet Marvel Studios decided to make their fanfare almost identical. And yet people speak like MS is some sort of a victim here...

Um....the Marvel name is on the fanfare, no matter who did it first. :) So, whether one company or another used Marvel on its fanfare first, second, whenever is not the issue, it (the name) belongs to Marvel.

And they still created that titlecard for the other studios to use. Why should they not be allowed to use their own creation with their own name on their own productions?

I'm pretty sure that title card is technically Marvel's. Marvel Studios existed well before Iron Man (they go back to the 90's, I believe), they just didn't really have much to do with the movies. They're officially part of the production on them, though. There's actually precedent for not using the traditional logo, too. They used a Marvel Knights card on the last Punisher and Ghost Rider movies.

The thing that disheartens me the most as an FF fan, is just how much prestige they have lost in recent years. I mean, this was Marvel's top tier title. "The world's greatest comic magazine." The history with Lee & Kirby braking ground on an entire new universe that was yet to emerge. The characters that were given birth in the book.

When I was a kid (and I'm guessing several here are old enough to remember) The Thing was a Flagship character. Yes,little Johnny. You know how people think of Iron Man today? That was Aunt Petunia's blue-eyed nephew, back in the day. He was probably 3rd after Spidey & Hulk in popularity. (Which I'm also disappointed how far down the list Hulk has fallen, but that's another subject entirely) Thing was so beloved, he got his own book: Marvel Two in One that paired him up with other Marvel heroes. Nowadays...do kids even know who the Thing is? Do they know anything about the FF? We had the old "Ring, ring do your Thing" cartoon.Yeah,it had nothing whatsoever to do with the FF as we know them, but it just goes to show how much kids loved the character, that he got his own starring cartoon.

Agreed. The Thing is one of the most likable Marvel characters, and Marvel Two in One's were great. But hey, comics aren't what they used to be. I remember the good old days when Reed Richards, Scott Summers, and Tony Stark were actually likable characters rather than *******s.

That's what I was saying. I was basically responding to Ene who was acting like FOX and the others created that title card.

I hope the dumb FFINO gets the Marvel Knights treatment if not nothing at all.

I agree they should use the Marvel Knights logo instead of the traditional one if they have some control in the title cards use. By doing so it might help general audiences from confusing this title with ones put out by Marvel Studios. In addition I have always viewed the words Marvel Knights to be something used on their darker projects like Punisher & Ghost Rider which you would expect to have more mature content then a Fantastic Four movie that really should be more or less a story about a family with powers. So despite the Marvel Knights logo having been used with the Fantastic Four comics at times in the past, I personally never felt the 2 things fit well together. So, it could be used to suggest the movie is darker, and could keep people that would have went to see it as a family movie away. It could backfire though as it seems the trend is to make everything darker and edgier if you want people to see it. Except with Marvel I think they have been quite successful at proving that a lighter movie can be equally awesome if done well. I just hope Marvel makes Fox sorry for being greedy. It would be one thing if Fox was throwing money into the movie like they do for X-Men to try and end up with a blockbuster, but when your only goal is to meet the minimum requirements to a contract so that you can hang onto the rights that is a pretty greedy business move and I really hope it comes back to bite them in the end.

what baffles me is why Fox can't understand that Fantastic Four has so much potential to be a great franchise and so on. They have the power to make a great film let alone a trilogy. Maybe the whole merchandise and other things that they can't produce is what is holding them back? But that wouldn't explain X-Men. They really should have planned this out years ago and how to dive in to make a great Fantastic Four.

I truly feel like Fox is running on borrowed time with these franchises.

Fox, despite cranking out the most films for an individual franchise, really hasn't been successful as the other studios.

DOFP is their only Marvel film to gross over $400 million. And considering they've released 9 films including the FF films (working on the 10th and 11th with the FF reboot and 'Apocalypse'), that says ALOT about their films.

Sony has released half of the amount of that, and has never grossed under $600 million.

Fox needs to straighten up. They can only go so far now that they're beginning to lose the luxury of familiar and nostalgic faces like Patrick Stewart and Hugh Jackman.

Familiarity and quantity is why they've stayed afloat, but times are quickly changing.

First Class, DOFP and now Apocalypse is their only hope to continue the franchise to get better and better. The previous xmen films just seem so bland now looking back on it. They have such a big universe. It seems like they are realizing that with them having spin offs now. I don't care what studio owns what characters, as long as the CBM are good and entertaining to all fans.

Um the fanfare was created by Marvel and first put in use on the first Spider-man film. It's been used in Marvel collaboration productions since, with slight changes, some showing flashes of the comic characters relevant to that movie.

Marvel owns the rights to the fanfare, as their marketing team put it together, which is why the original one used with Marvel Studios was the same other than saying "Marvel Studios".

A quick side discussion since franchise rights are something that we tend to keep an eye on here. Fox have confirmed that they are looking into an X-Men TV series however

But here's the slight complication: While sister production company 20th Century Fox controls the film rights to the X-Men characters, the comic itself is owned by Marvel, which is based at rival Disney. A live-action TV series requires Marvel's blessing – and that has led to some delicate talks.

Looks like we were right about the TV rights, wonder what Fox are willing to offer in order to see the TV series happen.

The Fantastic Four rights would be nice. :oldrazz:

Oh man.

"Give us Fantastic Four and all related characters and you can have tv rights to X-Men."

That's the bargaining chip.

There's still time, Marvel. Get the rights back, keep this movie from coming out, and give us what we know you CAN give us.

:lmao:
It's not even official concept art!!! Instead all we get is a 2nd-hand artist rendering. Fox's cageyness would be hilarious if it weren't so ominous.

Official concept art, even if the designs shown aren't what ends up in the movie, is more early promo media they could have released to give fans something to talk about and, hopefully, enjoy.

But nope. Nothing.

Yes. YesYesYes foX-Men is a lost cause anyway. Make it happen!

There's no way the rights to an X-Men tv series are worth the FF. Fox would never sell the FF for that.

There are other things Fox would probably like to have though, such as X-Men merchandizing rights. Throw enough things together in the pot, and I think Fox would trade the FF for it.

Fox doesn't seem to think the FF are worth much of anything after two awful attempts and third one they apparently don't have any faith in or excitement for.

We know for a fact Fox is far more interested in their cash cow the X-Men, putting actual effort into that property(enjoyment of that effort obviously varies from person to person, but there is effort compared to FF).

Marvel absolutely has the upperhand right now. They're doing just fine with making C list characters freaking household names and making money hand over fist while doing it.

So I hope, that during all this bargaining, Marvel is saying "Give us the Fantastic Four and all related characters or no dice" and they stick to that.

Those are good points too. Also, I remember in the past we've speculated on these boards about the possibility that there is a "renter's fee" of sorts between Marvel and Fox with respect to these past deals given how Fox allowed the rights to DD expire without trying to sell them back earlier and get something for them. If Fox is paying some sort of annual rent to hold onto these rights, that would also make the FF less valuable to hold onto.
