But the WSJ article just talked about how some things would be structured ( with some of their own speculation). This article took it a lot farther and made the leap to assume Disney is only interested in family content.
Disney is the master of family content. They dont need Fox if thats all theyre going to do.
There will be FUD until well after the acquisition is complete, trust me.
Technically what they are saying is true, 21CF WILL be cut down. Their output will be lower. Some of the cut down is due to redundancy, especially in marketing and distribution. Some of it is timing. Output will be lower again because of timing of releases and because:
Avatar, Alvin and the Chipmunks will go under the Disney umbrella. Avatar btw will be everywhere. Pandora lands will probably be announced for DLS and Paris in the next few years. Avatar merch will be everywhere.
X-Men, FF, and yes Deadpool will go to Feige and friends
There's no way output doesn't diminish because of that. They will still release the Kingsmans and Die Hards. Honestly I'm looking for reboots/remakes/sequels of 28 Days Later and The Fly. Also new Horror and R rated stories will probably come from them, but hopefully higher quality.
It's gonna be a long ride of articles like that even if Disney outlines their plans and roadmap. Once movies start releasing those articles will go away. We're long way from that though.
If I were Disney and if Venom bombs I would then go tell Sony "No more live action Spidey spinoffs if you want us to continue to produce Spider-Man films for you and have Spidey involved in the MCU. If you want to make your own live action Spidey universe go for it but if you do we are gone. You can't have it both ways. You want to be partners with us than be partners with us all the way, no more of these side projects like Venom."
If Venom bombs Disney will simply go to Sony and ask them if they want to sell at fair market price or take a hike. They will also be open to resign/extend the contract with a lot more amendments to it. The only bargaining chip that Sony has is that Disney still pays a percentage of the gross to them, no matter what.
Oh ok hopefully maybe Disney could trade with Sony for all the Spider-Man rights like something that isn't worth much to Disney but could be worth a lot to Sony got any ideas?
That's what I'm curious about and have few questions regarding this whole
Insomniac, Sony, Marvel deal
To my understanding
Insomniac is independant
The Spider-Man game is developed in house by Insomniac
Marvel went to Sony and Insomniac was Sony's first pick.
Insomniac picked Spider-Man.
Marvel just wanted a licensed game from Sony.
Spider-Man is using an Insomniac in-house engine
Marvel may have the rights to Spider-Man but not this particular game but Marvel can and hopefully will(I mean Disney is greedy after all) develop sequels or Spider-Man games with Insomniac and Sony can't do anything about this so the sequels can be and hopefully will be multi-platform I mean it's a Spider-Man game come on Marvel you know Spidey is popular with everyone capitalize on this.
What I'm curious about though is if it's possible for Marvel to hash out a deal with Sony to allow Insomniac to port the first game whether it be a complete edition like Spider-Man Wallcrawler Edition, or a remaster for the next gen systems and PC. a
Or can Marvel since they own the Spidey license can they tell Sony aato take a hike and tell Insomniac to port the first one over and do sequels.
Like for the first one maybe a trade can happen like Disney gives Sony something they don't need in exchange for the Spider-Man Film Rights, and an allowance to port Spider-Man PS4 on other platforms as well as release of any outstanding Marvel rights in regards to the character allowing for flexibility maybe no money changes hands just a trade then Disney/Marvel can pay for the porting costs, and publish it themselves.
Or maybe the second option the only thing stopping Marvel from doing this is pissing off Sony so when they just get the film rights they can do whatever they want and just get Insomniac to port the Spider-Man 2018 game to other platforms in prep for future sequels.
Also how likely do you think Marvel would just go to Insomniac directly to make a Spider-Man game assuming the current one will be a massive success for Sony only this time.
It's 1. Going to multiplat to maximize sales
2. Sony won't be in the equation
Very good question. We don't know the exact answer without looking at the contract. Disney has made blunders of deals before (The SW movie to Turner one year before deciding on Disneyflix is one. Maybe the Marvel netflix defenders shows as well).
Marvel's perspective was one of "okay we need to take these games in house and make quality games as opposed to **** like the Deadpool and Spider-Man ones from Activision, or the Iron Man one from Sega". Disney does not publish games anymore so Marvel had to go to a 3rd party. They may have just wanted to go to Insomniac, but when Insomniac went independent the publisher was a lot more hands on (their worst game was published by EA). The Sony - Insominac relationship has been pretty healthy with plenty of good combinations. It was a good first step for Marvel who seems to want to have a Marvel Game Universe as well, maybe that will be Earth 200000.
Yes, ideally Disney would have bought Insominiac and published the thing themselves on PS4, Steam, Xbox, Switch. Game has a low ROI and Disney is currently not interested in it (though I heard they may want to get back on it in the near-mid future).
There have been cases where a publisher published a game that was exclusive for a year (or more) before coming to other platforms. Oblivion, Bioshock, Mass Effect immediately come to mind. This case is a little trickier as it involves 3 players. Sony also has a copyright at the end of the trailers, as does Marvel. It might not be feasible to port this particular game to other platforms. Then again it might after X years or with a remake. We just don't know without looking at the contract. Can the North Koreans hack Sony again?
