Going to be interesting to see what the % drop off for this weekend will be for Venom. At this moment, it is sitting at ~$230 Million Worldwide. For any other film, that is pretty respectable, but for a Marvel branded film that is chump change. If this doesn't easily clear $350 - $400 million worldwide this weekend, then Sony has big problem. If they are dumb enough to push forward and yank Spidey from the MCU, than all they will end up doing is further damaging the brand.

... of course then to really understand how profitable a film is, you also have to consider home video, merchandising etc.

This could become a key point. Venom was their best (non-Spider-Man) chance. Morbius, Kraven etc. don't have anywhere near the potential of Venom in terms of name recognition, interesting story-telling potential, recognizably (Hey! I've seen that black guy with the teeth and tongue.) etc.

If Venom had knocked it out of the park, they might really have something they could build on. If it makes money, but not crazy money, they may want to rethink if/how they move forward. They also can't bolster lack-luster box office results with merchandising revenue.

And as we've been discussing, I don't know if that means they'll bring Spider-man in sooner, or they'll realize they need to work with Marvel.

I think Venom's results should at least be making some at Sony wonder how viable their strategy may be.

I would think it's almost a certainty that they have spent some time considering the sustainability of this whole endeavor. I keep going back to the same thought in my head: even the most inept execs at Sony have to had momentarily thought "Hey, there's a realistic chance that this is the pinnacle of our success. That it's all downhill from here."

Of course, their Morbius movie could surprise us all, and be a tremendous financial and critical success. The simple fact, however, is that Sony has done nothing (i.e., laying the groundwork in Venom) to suggest that this is even remotely the case.

Very, very important points. Venom is supposed to be the bedrock from which they build a connected universe and eventually snatch Spider-Man back to be a part of. Comparatively, Venom is thus far trending lower than The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and that film pushed ultimately pushed them to Marvel Studios. Right now I'm not getting a good feeling of Venom's chances to keep the train going this weekend. I think this film is already running out of steam.

2 Turd 2 Hunt

Turd Hunt 2: Turd Harder

Turd2stic

(My inner 12 year old is really enjoying this)

:pal:

I hope no storm in bp 2. They are not gonna shaft lupitas very well received character in the sequel because some of you want a forced romance from the comics to take place. I know Feige is smarter than that.
Agreed

I don't like the BP and Storm pairing, at all.

It's almost insulting... Why are they even a thing? It's like someone thought "hey, these are the 2 most recognized African super heroes, that means we should make them a couple".

Bleh.

I'm Team Nakia all the way, so I would prefer Coogler not bring in Ororo as a potential love interest. But I'd love to see her (re)introduced in a Panther sequel. She could be a confused teen, weaponized by the big bad - sort of like in X Men: Apocalypse, only good

As long as they don't use her as a love interest for T'Challa, then yes, having her in BP 2 would be cool.

For me Ororo should be a bigger deal than just a cameo though and she most definitely should not be anybody's trophy wife.

Venom will turn Sony a profit unless they spent silly money on marketing (they have done that in the past but probably not with Venom).

Yeah, Sony spend A LOT on marketing.

Homecoming: $140M

Marvel Studios:

Infinity War: $150M
Guardians 2: $80M

Deadline:

That means they had an insane marketing budget, LOL! If break even was that high. That means they spent more marketing the movie than making it. I do have a hard time believing that.

Isn't Nakia's character supposed to be destined to become a villain?
Classically, but idk it feels wrong for this nakia to do that. It's not in line with her character. The comics version of nakia was much different even before she went crazy.

It's sony. They went overbord with ASM 2 and HC marketing, why wouldnt they with this one?

Yeah, but it doesn't make sense to spend 150 mil in marketing a release in a slower month of the year. If Venom were a July film, then I would buy it more easily.

Yeah, I remember when Fant4stic came out, I was curious how much they were losing on it, so I did some research, From what I saw, the amount the studio gets ranges from about 45% to 55% depending on many variables (studios get more for better performing films and less for poorer performing films, and they get more for domestic than foreign box office receipts as a couple examples of the variables). So, assuming 50% should be pretty close in most cases.

Studios get 25% in China, ~40% OS on average, and anywhere between 40-60% Domestic, depending on the studio and its negotiating power.

I don't need Ororo as a love interest but I'd love to see her introduced as a wider universe character who is still learning her powers at the time.

I see no reason why Storm cannot be in Black Panther 2. She doesn't have to be in there as a love interest. It also would allow us to get more into Storm's roots and her backstory more organically.

Storm should absolutely be in Black Panther 2, to cement her as one of the female leads in the MCU. We need to communicate to the audience a side of Storm nobody has ever seen before. Using Marvel's biggest solo franchise to dive into Ororo's African roots is too good of an opportunity to pass up.

Now I don't neccesarily need or want her to serve as a love interest for T'Challa, though.

Storm doesn’t need to appear in a BP sequel in any capacity other than a cameo in a post-credit sequence. One shouldn’t shoehorn characters in a movie just for the sake of setting something up. If Coogler doesn’t want Storm in the sequel then Storm should not appear. I’d rather she be introduced in a proper X-Men film then be shoehorned in.

I prefer she's introduced in an x-story first, her Wakanda connections are a pretty recent thing in the comics, and seeing Wakandans worship her as a goddess would be weird considering all the crazy s**t they've seen
besides, seeing any other actress stand next to angela basset with that white hair would be a sad reminder of what should've been...lol

Absolutely. She doesn't have to be there as a love interest. Nakia is great and there's no reason to leave her out.

Coogler and the cretive team of Black Panther did a fantastic job respecting and celebrating african culture, and I see in Black Panther, with that creative team, the best place in the MCU to introduce Ororo, respecting her african origin. She is an iconic X-Men member, of course, but I see Black Panther doing a better job in giving her a respectful introduction.

It will really show that Storm is different this time and I know Coogler can give her the origin she deserves. I would love for Storm to become one of the leading figures of the MCU with a wider presence outside of the X-Men.

storm being in BP2 woldnt be a shoe in at all. the deal will close early next year. Coogler has all of 2019 to write the script. even if he gets told June/July next year to introduce her thats stil 6 months to come up with a solid origin story.

BP2 has already a built in storyline. After T’Challa opening the rest of the world to Wakanda, the Wakandians may now think this isn’t a good idea after the events of Inifinty War, you can have some tribes question T’Challa leadership. In comes Storm who with her powers the Wakandians may think is a Godsent.

storm being the first mutant would be awesome. Since its normally wolverine who gets the spotlight.
