I knew he would get banned. I suspect all new posters now, especially ones who suddenly join in conversations on threads.

Most folks wade gently into the forums, so whenever you see a hyper aggressive poster with an extremely low post count its almost certainly a formerly banned poster.

Yep. It certainly seem like the XMen TV rights transaction had nothing to do with FF live action movie rights.

Interesting thing about the first quote - and something we didn't know - is that Marvel already co owned Ego, so they didn't really need it from Fox. Instead of asking for something else - like co ownership of Galactus/SS/Storm - they ask to fully own a character they already owned lol. Never changer Marvel, never change.

You have to note that Marvel was denying that they were doing Civil War before it was announced.

The Gunn quote on the previous page lets me know for sure that both studios know that the fans want the FF back at Marvel. So why would Fox sit on the rights to a film that they know fans would bash from the onset? I also wonder what Disney's plan is. Have they offered a deal and Fox refused? Or are they waiting for the rights to revert, taking a risk that Fox won't crap out another one?

The not knowing is incredibly frustrating. One moment there seems to be a hint of a possibility, the next its gone. I'm intrigued by Marvel being present at both D23 and SDCC, but I won't get my hopes up over anything.

Probably best to leave this thread till we get more news.

I won't lie, Gunn's comment is disheartening :csad:

But that being said I wonder how in the loop he would be on it all? He didn't know the Badoon was held by Fox until he wrote them into GOTG1.

And what he saying now about Ego being shared all along is contrary to his previous comment on that trade:
"Yes, this is true! When I first pitched Ego as Quill's father, I THOUGHT we owned the character. After I had worked out a very elaborate story with Ego the Living Planet as a very important part of the Marvel cosmic universe, I learned that we actually didn't own the character. I had no back up plan, and it would be nearly impossible to just drop another character in. Thank God Fox came to us and wanted to make a trade...

That was a pretty definite statement that he couldn't have used Ego if they had not done that deal.

So...I don't know what to think, lol.

This right here Wobbly. First it was s straight up trade and now Ego was shared all along. Just doesnt sound right to me. They ask for a character they had in their possession. Strange indeed. I dont even know what to think now.

I'm guessing Disney wants to do a deal to get it all, including the XMen, or just let things run its course. And I gotta be honest, I would prefer to have the XMen over FF in the MCU.

Gunn is doing an AMA on facebook this Sunday at 1PM PST/ 4PM EST, someone needs to ask him that.

It could be that because the MCU is an amalgam of the comic book planet and
a celestial
Marvel only had the rights to a portion of what Gunn wanted to present.

I say keep the hope alive. Just be patient. It might take time, but I believe it will happen. Even if it takes years, it will happen.

For all we know, this back and forth on what was held where is part of the negotiations that are being held under some form of the ol' Get Smart "Cone of Silence" type device.

Then again, it is a smoke screen for Murdoch or the Mouse buying out the other. Horror thought, what if the Mouse and Fox tried to merge? Besides the revolt in many regulatory agencies world-wide, it might be that which gets us a MCU FF. (all in jest here, gang. Do NOT take that as a sign of something that would be happening).

Some of us might not have that long left to make it to a theatre to see it. I swear every time a car gets near my bike, I age another year. Given Utah drivers, I'm nearly as old as Stan Lee, right now due to that. :oldrazz:

I'm actually glad we have this statement from Gunn. I thought it more likely than not that they didn't have the rights, and it's good to have such an unequivocal statement.

I also like the fact that fans and Marvel are having this conversation and the FF aren't just forgotten as they're locked away in the Fox dungeon.

As for the Ego comments, there's probably some ambiguity. If it was like Quicksilver, both studios might have had a claim to the character, but Marvel lawyers might have stepped in and said: "Look, we don't want another Quicksilver situation, so let's lock this down. We don't want you using the character unless Fox signs off on it."

I'd have thought that change would have given Marvel more freedom to use Ego just as they wanted, not less.

If the roles were reversed and that's how Fox wanted to use him it would be a different story (another NSTW thing).

When Marvel used Quicksilver they changed his and Wanda's origin without issue (and a change they had to do for obvious reasons). Worth noting Fox changed his name to 'Peter' for their version. A courtesy change or something they sat down down and agreed to perhaps?

The only thing I can fathom to explain why Marvel wanted or felt they needed Ego completely (to the point Gunn certainly did think he wouldn't be able to use him without the deal) is perhaps there's some royalty clause on merchandising using the name? They have knocked out Ego toys for GOT2...

I'd lay money that's just Fox being Fox.

"Pietro? That's way to 'comic-booky'. We better make him 'Peter'. And for God's sake no costume."

Bleeding Cool posted the list of Fantastic Four characters that are off limits to artists for trading card sketch cards. At over 400 characters, I can see why getting the movie rights back from Fox may be tougher than we fans might expect.

 It's pretty cool looking through that list if nothing else.

And a couple names that jumped out at me were Terrax and Mephisto.

Those are a couple big names that I assumed Marvel had, particularly Mephisto.

I didn't have enough time to really look through the list. I'll have to do that later. Anybody else see any interesting names?

I thought Peter Fonda played Mephisto in Ghost Rider.

I think they technically called him Mephistopheles there. So, I suppose its possible they don't have the rights.

One thing you have to keep in mind is that the guy who signs off on handing back F4, assuming Marvel then turns it into a huge franchise, will have to answer to the investors as to why he couldn't make it profitable. Not really a position people want to actively put themselves in

If they don't have the rights, just add a suffix onto the end of the name like Sony did. Problem solved:

Mr Fantastic? Mr Fantastico.

Thing? Thingy.

Invisible Woman? Invisible Womaniser

Human Torch? Human Torcher.

Silver Surfer? Silver Surface.

:o

Before my post was removed (I'm sure it was because it was related Bannana'ed poster), I said I'm not interested in criticizing Marvel because I don't know enough about what's going on behind the scenes and neither, presumably, do any of us. We read stuff and say "Oh....see how stupid so and so was?" In fact, WE are most likely the ignorant ones. Let's pick up what we can, but just because you read something, doesn't make it gospel (which isn't, IMO, very reliable either, but you get the point).

Fox couldn't have done that for The Thing (no thingy).
