@ Andrew: I mean that it's weird that Stan did that with MJ, building up her introduction so much. IMO, it would've made more sense for him to do something like that for Gwen given his intentions for the relationship.
Anyway, If you think about it, "The Night Gwen Stacy Died" is essentially a love story between Peter and Gwen. At its core, it's a story that forever cemented their tragic Romeo and Juliet type love in the Spidey mythos, and made Gwen the iconic figure that she is. If Conway just wanted to shove the character aside, there were other ways that he could have gone about it.
Hardly anyone compares MJ or Gwen to Betty Brant.
edit: I'm not getting into the soulmate stuff since that's really just a matter of personal opinion. IMO, you can fall in love with different people at different points in your life and love them fully for different reasons. However, Gwen Stacy will always be "the one that got away".
