Actually if that number is correct, its tie for 5th widest release with HP7.2. BOM has Twilight: Eclipse, HP6, IM2, Shrek 4 ahead of it with TDK ranking 6th.

But in the end screen counts are more important.

You're looking at widest release rather than widest opening. Shrek 4 and HP6 increased their theater counts later in their runs. Here is the list of widest openings:

4,375 would be tied with DH2 for third highest opening. And yes, screen count is more important. TDK opened in 17 more theaters than the Avengers, but the Avengers opened on 2,500 more screens.

Really? That's not what a few sites stated. One concluded a 175m opening while another called it at 169m.

And the Hollywood exchange is estimating a $165m opening.

I think you guys expecting a 180m or 190m may be going a little to high. It will be a pleasant surprise tho if it happens.

The 4,375 is the theaters count and not the screens count, correct? What's the screens count then?

I'm still expecting 180mil at least, I don't care what The Hollywood Exchange is predicting.

#TDKR‬ will have the 3rd-widest opening ever, and could wind up breaking 'Twilight Saga: Eclipse's 4,468 theater record

Should be well over 10,000. DH2 was on 11,200 last year in July. Avengers was on 11,700 in May this year. Early May means zero competition, so it would be pretty surprising to me if TDKR ends up with a screen count as big as Avengers. TDKR is dealing with a Spider-Man movie that was released just 9 days ago and a brand new Ice Age movie being released this weekend. DH2's 11,200 screen count is probably WB's target.

First of all, those numbers were directed at The Avengers.

Secondly, 180m is not too high. In fact, it's quite possible.

I think WB should give everyone who has been registered here for five years or more 0.0001pc of profits.

Good idea, Regwec!

Yeah right, lol. Like that would ever happen. It isn't fair though! I've stuck with Nolan and his Batman epic from the beginning like a lot of us here and have lurked the hype since 2001 and started posting in 2002.

With that said, Nolan's conclusion to his Batman story will be bittersweet for me. Batman Begins was the very last movie my older brother saw in theaters and it was with me. He was diagnosed with end stage liver cancer. He said that it was the best superhero movie he had ever seen. He left the theater happy with Begins and wouldn't stop gushing about everything from the characters, story, dialogue. He became obsessed with the score and wouldn't be quiet about the very end of Begins.

3 months later, he passed away at the age of 26 :csad: Now I'm the one that is obsessed! :woot:

I'm excited for Rises and at the same time, I'll be thinking of my brother who waited all of his very short life to see the perfect rendition of Batman which Nolan presented with Begins! The only way I can thank him for that is by viewing Rises multiple times.

July 20th can't come soon enough!

Well that will definitely prevent any record breaking, however on the flip side that usually means a higher multiplier. Avengers looks like it will end up with a bit lower multiplier than TDK (around 3.0 vs TDK 3.35), because it had the opposite effect on it. There was no competition in may but now that's it's been out for 3 months it's lost enough screens that it cant make it to 650M, and will probably peter out between 620-630 unless they do a re-release.

VERY touching! I remember watching begins at midnight on IMAX in Dallas with my girlfriend and I distinctly remember about 10mins into the movie when Wayne is climbing the mountain and picks the rare blue flower, with the score pounding, that despite how hyped I was for this movie (been a Nolanite since Memento) that I wasn't ready for THIS... It was a special film and after the screening was over we all cheered and everyone was talking to everyone in the parking lot about how amazing it was.

Nolan held up his end of the bargain on that last joker card scene with TDK... And I expect Rises to do the same...

I do believe this will go down as the best trilogy of all time as each film improved on the last while elevating its predecessor as well.

it's been fun lurking and getting hyped on these boards with you guys over the years! I do believe this'll be my last real geek "kid" experience with a set of films, and I can't wait to introduce these flicks to my kids one day!

:csad: Hmph. Once in a while, the superficial knock-about banter of the internet forum is pierced by something genuine that reaches right to the heart.

I am so sorry to hear about your brother. I hope that TDKR is just the film that he would have wanted.

Thanks! It will be since we had similar tastes in music/movies!

Remember people were somewhat low-balling the avengers nobody predicted it would open above 200, and i think most predictions were around 160-170 range.

Yes, the other thing helping TDKR's legs will be IMAX. Avengers had its IMAX screens stolen by the likes of Dark Shadows, MIB3, and Prometheus. TDKR is apparently going to have exclusive access to IMAX for something like 2 months (maybe longer). TDK had a 10 multiplier in IMAX from a $6m opening. If TDKR opens similarly to Avengers in IMAX ($15m), the 2 month exclusive deal gives it a chance to hit $100+ million in the format. That would be a boost of around $40-45m to the film's total gross.

Exactly. THE AVENGERS was tracking to do around 150-60 Million on it's opening weekend, but it just went way beyond even those astounding numbers. I'm expecting the same thing for TDKR; it's gonna be a monster.

It may have made $200M opening weekend but about 60% of the Avenger's box office sales came from 3D viewing.

Naw, the more accurate number is 52%. Without 3D, The Avengers grossed in about 160-175 million on OW (depending on who does the 'math').

Its just tough to really throw out a prediction anymore. There's no 3D, the film's run time is long. I do think having a 3:45 AM showing will help but not by much. It's tracking around the same numbers Avengers did according to surveys and what not. And if that's true, without 3D -- $180-$185 million is a good number.

But everyone and their grandmother could decide to go see this movie and it could end up taking $250M OW as the SHH poll suggested but I don't know if that is even possible. Every single showing would have to be completely sold out.

That or WB will have to make sure every theater/showing is sold out, lol.
