In 17 days, TDKR has made 378 million in the foreign market (a 31% lead over TDK), and will likely be at 430 million next week... Joker, who?

It's 49% actually.

Warner Bros. included some interesting comparison statistics in this weekend's report. The Dark Knight Rises is currently tracking 31 percent ahead of The Dark Knight across the same markets at this time when using the exchange rates that existed during The Dark Knight's run. Using today's more favorable rates, however, The Dark Knight Rises is currently running 49 percent ahead of its predecessor.

I think... to be fair, we have The Dark Knight to thank to the warmer international numbers for TDKR.

The love for that film and Inception meant TDKR was always going to be the biggest international Batman film.

This might even be the first time a Batman movie has been more successful in foreign markets than domestic.

Not the first time. Batman & Robin made more overseas than domestic, but it also flopped in North America. Failed to even reach its production budget (never mind marketing), while TDKR will beat its production budget by around $200m and its production/marketing budget by around $100m in North America. It's the first Batman movie to be a big success in North America and then end up making a large majority of its worldwide gross from overseas revenue.

They have good taste or they love it's almost a British movie. Probably both.

I'm glad I saw Batman & Robin in theaters, which btw was the first time I saw a Batman film in theaters.

I think the general rule is to make double of what the movie cost for a good profit. There was an article (LA Times I think?) that said that the production cost was 250M and the marketing cost was 150M (total of 400M) so if TDKR can make at least 800M (which it will), then WB should be rejoicing.

I don't think they'll be rejoicing. They have had a pretty lousy year so far.

I've always thought he's been an incredibly good sport when it comes to Newsies, the Disney musical he did when he was about 17. Musicals clearly aren't his thing (it wasn't originally a musical when he was cast), and the movie tanked at the box office, but it went on to become this big cult hit on video and has a ton of fans now.

As much as he reacts like when it comes to that movie (and I love that movie, but I can't really blame him), he also acknowledged that he can't say anything bad about it, because if he does, he knows he has a whole lot of fans of that movie to answer to.

In some of the interviews leading up to TDKR, he was asked a few times about the new Broadway stage version of Newsies, and I thought it was sweet how he congratulated the cast for making such a hit out of what he called "something we apparently made a shambles of".

I loved the "Newsies" growing up. I thought his portrayal of Jack Kelly was great.

Well for TDKR at least (not counting their losses at other movies). I'm sure they hoped for more but it it makes double of what it cost, then it's not a loss for them and they still got some good money out of it.

I didn't track it but it looks like Wrath of the Titans bombed, right? How did Dark Shadows do?

Interesting read, surprised at Potter being number 1 but then I guess it sort of caters to all ages so has the widest span of audience attraction. Batman is probably a bit dark for some.

While TDKR has to thank apart of its dividends to TDK and Inception, I practically consider TDKR's gravy train to derive directly from the film's story and characters/performances. Bane was an unknown villain following an iconic one (Hardy pitted against Ledger) and Anne Hathaway as Catwoman had many people out there scratching their heads and/or loathing the decision.

Three weeks later, Bane is one of the baddest and most exciting mofos in the genre, and Hathaway is receiving mountains of praise for her portrayal of Selina Kyle.

Dark Shadows and Rock of Ages were both big flops for WB. Wrath of the Titans failed to turn a profit worldwide as well.

I don't know if it really mattered when it's all said and done but there was something off too with how TDKR was marketed (pre-Colorado tragedy). I can't really explain it... I think it's because they wanted to keep everything a secret. The screenings were very select, late embargoes, very few magazine covers for the cast, fewer than usual press rounds, etc. I was really surprised that Anne only got ONE magazine cover to promote TDKR when I was expecting her to be everywhere. Bale and Hardy didn't get any in the US either (Bale had some foreign ones but not as much as during TDK). No interviews with the online movie blogs like Collider, /Film, etc.
