The Holmes movies were winter blockbusters, were they not? I get the impression that winter blockbusters get to be more deliberately paced and less bombastic than summer flicks. Not to mention longer.

I think the line between summer and winter blockbusters has become very blurred in recent years. Avatar and Star Wars are the best examples.

Depends on what you mean by "faithful". Chris' Batman may not have been the world's greatest detective, but there are plenty of themes and ideas that I think will be hard to execute just as well.

For example, I think TDK is one of the best representations of the Batman/Joker dynamic we've seen in all of Batman media. I don't know if that particular aspect will be topped anytime soon, and that's just one instance.
True. I guess I meant faithful in terms of being more like a comic book, if that makes sense. Something more like the Marvel films, for example. A "comic book movie". Nolans films had a different feel to them and didn't just feel like a superhero/comic film.

That's one of the strengths of these movies, IMO. They were superhero movies, but in many ways went above the genre and didn't feel like traditional ones. I think that's why they've been so influential to movies both inside and outside the CBM genre.

Absolutely. I think the solo Batman franchise is just warming up. It could be topped soon with Affleck at the helm, or we'll get it the next time. At some point they will be able to make an even better Batman movie. I do have confidence in the Batman film that features Jared Leto.

I think you can certainly top TDK in various specific areas, but even with Affleck at the helm I have to admit that I find it difficult to imagine another Batman film that does all of the following at once:

-Defines the Batman/Joker relationship, even when the characters have no prior history
-Gives us the full Harvey Dent arc
-Gives us an Oscar-winning performance
-Taps into the zeitgeist and gets lauded for being a more than a CBM
-Becomes a pop culture phenomenon in the tradition of Batman 89

My personal opinion, I think Batman is too good a character, that attracts too much talent for us not to get plenty of more good/great Batman films in the future. But something with TDK's sheer potency will be tough to duplicate.

And if any superhero movie were to ever win Best Picture (doubt it but you never know), it would certainly owe something to TDK for blazing the trail and knocking hard at that door in 2008.

I would love to see a slower Batman movie with not as much big scale action. A couple of scenes where he has to fight some thugs but nothing more than that. A lot of detective work. Just being a watchful protector at night. A good story involving Bruce, the villain. But more of a psychological thriller. Maybe Cary Fukunaga or Denis Villeneuve directing it with as much control, if not more, than Nolan.

It probably wouldn’t draw very much money or a crowd, but I’d love to see a movie based around Commissioner Gordon’s early days and he’d narrate it. That would be my dream movie.

Well, Star Wars is yet to come out. But I thought Avatar was a lot more deliberately paced than summer films. At least the first two acts.

Maybe if we ever get to a point where superhero movies finally start burning out at the box office and the studios start looking for ways to make them on lower budgets we could see something like that. Batman is one of the few that you could conceivably do that with without it feeling tacky.

To be honest though, if we get to that point I'd rather just see the cable drama version as that would be ideal for a more slow burn mystery type of story.

I would really love to see a Batman film that loosely adapts Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth. I think that's something that would have the potential to be lauded as "more than a CBM" if done right.

Me too. That said, if it were to be done, it is more likely to be done as an animated film rather than a live action film IMO.

I mean, it could be done as an animated film that emulates the style of the book with a more strict adaptation, but it could also be loosely adapted into a film. It would have to be less surrealistic and the story would need to be a bit more fleshed out (along with some more action), but it could still keep the same core concept and themes.

It's one of the best stories to tell for a veteran Batman with a long history of fighting his rogues. They'd be able to include some of Batman's most famous rogues without the need for long backstories or set-up, and there's also a very cool mystery element at play with the story of Amadeus Arkham and all that.

Yea. I wanna see Two Face piss himself because the coin landed wrong on film.

I know this is completely off topic, but I just have to say I'm so glad Star Wars is happening. This is the first time I'm really feeling that special sort of hype for a film since TDKT ended. It's nice to get that feeling back.

I'd also like to point out that the tone of the trailer, particularly starting out with the light piano notes, felt extremely reminiscent of TDKR's trailer 3 to me. Makes me proud as a fan of the trilogy to see the bit of influence there- at least in how they're presenting the film. But definitely a full circle moment, as Star Wars was obviously a a huge inspiration for Nolan.

It's interesting to look at the way the Star Wars and Batman franchises have kind of traded off over the last decade and a half. Nolan's trilogy began right as the prequels ended. And now we have new iterations of both at the same time. It's a crazy age we live in.

^ Yup, and if you want to go even further back...Batman 89 came out 6 years after Return of the Jedi, and Phantom Menace came out 2 years after Batman & Robin.

They've never both been active at the same time, save summer of '05, but that was only for one summer. This will be a constant for the foreseeable future. Crazy times indeed.

Yeah, I totally got the TDKR trailer 3 vibe from the latest SW trailer.

So stoked for that film!

Anybody know if JJ is color timing SW in a lab instead of DI? It's got that filmic look similar to the TDK trilogy.

I'm not sure. I'm guessing no though. The extreme blue hue in the snowy forest stuff strikes me as DI. I could be wrong though.

The colors do seem rich, yet authentic though for the most part so I know what you mean.

Seems relevant, Happy BTTF day!

Talk is cheap.

But seriously, how exactly can this be possible with a man who flies and is an alien?
