The Dark Knight Rises The TDKR General Discussion Thread - - - - - - - Part 156

1.) I do not remember this trailer like...at all. Does anyone else?
2.) Is the shot at 1:37 of Batman fighting Bane's follower in the film?

You don't?

After Trailer 3, the Nokia trailer is probably the best trailer that the film had.. The music is just phenomenal.

Do yourself a favor and check out the Man of Steel Nokia trailer too. It's amazing.

I think The Dark Knight Rises had the best set of trailers of all 3 films honestly. they felt so epic and conclusive.

I'm seriously tempted to grab the Mcfarlane Toys. But at the same time, I'm in the midst of a 4k collecting blitz and I honestly can't afford both. Literally just pre ordered the $125 Superman 1-4 5 disc 4k set, which made me cringe due to the price. What to do?

I'm glad the Nokia trailer dropped it only for getting a better quality of that dope Junkie XL version of Bane's theme from the MTV sizzle reel.

But as somewhat of a trailer snob I actually don't think it's particularly well put together, same goes for that Pizza Hut TDK trailer. You can just tell they are not put together with the same level of skill that the real trailers are and are basically glorified fan trailers that string together a bunch of cool moments without any sort of rhyme or reason.

That is all. :oldrazz:

Damn, I'm late to the party.
I also remember the Nokia trailer very well, and same, it was my favorite.
Loved the music. Didn't know it was Junkie XL though.

I was going to talk about the Domino's Pizza trailer for The Dark Knight.
It may be a little less well cut than the others, but I really liked how he used the more emotional part of the Batman Begins soundtrack to give us a trailer with a vibe less bombastic than the others (at least at its start).
And like you @Gothamsknight , I really like that line as the end of the trailer. Isn't this also an alternate take?

Speaking of trailers, there was also this :

I still love that shot of Batman running across the roof of the police car, I guess to get to the pod and try to save Rachel after the Joker interrogation. It's not much, but it was rare to see Batman move like that and... well, it's just a nice shot. It could have been cool to have it in the movie, especially because I don't think it would have destroyed the frenetic pace of that scene.

About that moment, there's a quick shot of Batman on his pod passing some cars. Well, if you didn't noticed it, you can find at another point in the movie an alternate take of that same shot, with the exact same cars and all. Just a random editing trivia. :D

Oh man, I was looking for this one! I used to love this trailer because of how ominous it was. And, of course, plenty of alternate shots in there haha.

I was working in a movie theatre when Rises was coming out and we definitely played that trailer in front of a few films. I want to say we started playing it a week or two before the film came out.

The MTV trailer was my personal favorite. Even thinking back on it now, it’s so weird to see Christopher Nolan at the MTV Movie Awards.

When I saw the film I was so disappointed that that piece of music from the trailer wasn’t in there.

I'm prettttty sure it is, if memory serves. I think he was working for Zimmer's company at the time which is where he cut his teeth for doing film composing. He's got a pretty cool remix on the TDKR soundtrack too.

Still bugs me that an official version of that Nokia/MTV track has never been released. I remember my hype just going through the roof when I first heard that.

Never forget. :funny:

There was also the Comcast trailer for The Dark Knight. I remember watching this thing on repeat when the film was about to come out.

Yeah it’s weird that wasn’t in there because Batman on top of the car was one of the main promotional images for the movie. I remember that being the first reveal of Batman’s new suit in Entertainment Weekly. And a lot of fan art used that image before we got an official poster.

Yeah, I think you are right. Beyond the remix, I think Junkie XL was already a collaborator with Zimmer on the rest of the soundtrack. I mean... those percussions layers were really, really overwhelming :funny:

Absolutely!
I remember the day that photo dropped, and how puzzled I was right away about the suit... Still is tbh, but hey, the film easily makes me forget about it!

That whole year before the release of the movie was very special, especially on this board. At that time, I didn't have an account but I read all the threads related to the movie almost every day. The forum was never as active as it was at that time. And it will be like that until Rises.
In comparison, The Batman threads seems a bit dead but it was also another time with a very different internet...

Have fans turned on the Dark Knight/Rises suit?

I remember everyone preferring it. Now it's crapped on, from what I'm seeing.

It was always controversial from what I remember. There were notable voices on this site at the time that were very against it, and against the overall “cleaner” aesthetic of the film compared to Begins. So not much has changed, really. I understand some of the criticisms of the suit and I’ll always be disappointed there wasn’t a version 3 of it that combined features of both, but I really admire it as the first major evolutionary step beyond the foam rubber that had been the norm for 20 years. The first to incorporate fabric into the design, the first to have a movable neck. Even if you’re not into it visually I think it can be appreciated on those grounds.

I always took that as a middle finger to the haters. I remember when Arkham Knight came out back in 2015, Rocksteady put out a public vote on which Nolan Batman suit they put in the game. The TDK suit won by a landslide.

Things like that just show me that the haters are just a loud vocal minority.

I think Begins suit worked awesome for the more 'creature of the night' version of Batman we got in Begins, and I still love that suit/cowl.

The TDK/R suit has its own appeal for me. The more tactical look I think works in a greater variety of scenarios. It can still look very classic Batman/menacing in the shadows/night. But through the two sequels you see it under harsh lighting, daylight, super contrast-y situations like Bane's lair. I don't think the BB suit would've worked as well in all of those situations. And that's to say nothing of the increased mobility. It totally worked l in context, which is all that matters.

And for as much as people bag on the fight scenes, I appreciate that I can see that it's Bale under there doing his own stuff for the vast majority of it. It's why I never gave much of a crap about the warehouse fight in BvS, at least in terms of rating Affleck's Batman.

I’ve grown to love the TDK suit. The Begins suit is still one of my favourites, but the other served its purpose. There are some shots where it looks really great. I think the legs could have been made less busy, though.

My Nolanverse 1/6 collection is pretty much complete. I may add Ras and Scarecrow eventually, but not rushing to get those. But Ras is more likely as I think someone is gonna sell me a parted out set for pretty cheap.

But anyway, I received the DX19 on Friday which I got for a *steal*. And the Joker was a blank headsculpt I painted myself. Which I also finished on Friday, so perfect timing.

I’ll be getting a black belt for John Blake/Nightwing, as well. Thinking of putting together a Quasi-Nolan inspired Batgirl, too.

Yeah, TDK suit has been controversial since day one, and I'm surprised people has chosen it over BB suit for Arkham Knight. I like it and prefer it to the Begins one, but I still find it a little busy sometimes. IMO The Batman's Batsuit nailed better the tactical aspect of the batsuit that maybe Nolan was aiming to.

The Reeves suit is far more DIY and low-tech than what Nolan was doing. The Begins suit is the closer comparison because Bruce pieced it together himself in the film, but Nolan’s starting design philosophy was very different.

I have no attachment to that trailer since I don't recall ever seeing it - so as someone who it's 100% fresh to, I have to agree.

Halfway through seeing it for the first time I was thinking "This just feels like a random clip montage..."

I don't feel it's well put together, no.

Currently watching Rises for the first time since February of '22. I have some critiques I'd like to hear some of you chime in on.

First, I think the film could've used a little restructuring. I'd have loved if Bane broke everyone out of Blackgate after Batman's first return - forcing Batman to go out and attempt to round up everyone the best he can, wearing him out even further. This would've been more like Knightfall, for sure. And you can even have Bane waiting in the Batcave just like that story, and he breaks Batman there. I mean, Bane already knew his identity. Have Bane get rid of him because he's interfering.

^This is more a me-thing, but it would've accomplished more source material connection and would've had the same effect.
  • The Batcave - I wish it was a little more tricked out. It's very understated.
  • I'd have loved to have seen some Batman at the start, the moment where he decides he isn't needed, that he can't keep operating in the shadows to diminishing returns. It would've been a powerful thing to see.
  • Parts of Bane's/Talia's plan just seem weird, to me. Why not detonate the second the Bat-Symbol was on the bridge to ensure victory? Why bother torturing a city for months if you're just going to blow it up?
  • Alfred's line - "You are as precious to me as you were to your own mother and father, and I swore to them that I would protect you...and I haven't." - should absolutely have been in the final cut. This is a criminal omission.
  • There's not enough Batman in the film, I feel. When he is there - it's great. I just wanted more. Waiting 45 minutes to see him in a sequel is just too long. Luckily, the film is engaging from the start, so that helps. EDIT - I just found out he is Batman almost as much as the previous film and more than in the first. Weird.
  • The finale should've taken place at nightfall. It would've looked way better/cooler and fits Batman more.
  • I'd have loved to see more of the chaos of Gotham with ordinary people struggling, being killed, hurt, etc. I know, runtime and all.
  • I would've loved if Talia was a visible villain for the whole film.
  • Also, they should've shown Foley's death. That random closeup of him sleepy on the ground is pretty damn awkward.
  • Batman/Bane's second fight is pretty rough - Batman has a goofiness factor to him, here. And the yelling at Bane is a bit self-parody.

Positive Tidbits -
  • Anne Hathaway is very much Selina Kyle/Catwoman. She's a good sense of nobility, but she wants to hide it. But she also has a mischievous, selfish side. She balances the two so well. Anyone who says she wasn't a good Catwoman is full of it.
  • Batman is more Batman-y in his style in this film than he was in the last film. He's back to stealthy takedowns, gadgets, shadow hiding, just being Batman-like.
  • The shot of Batman jumping the Bat-Pod off the truck is epic.
  • This film is so gorgeously shot. It looks amazing. I think it may have the strongest 'look' of the film. Well. Maybe not better than Begins but certainly better than Knight.
  • Gotham is back to looking far more Gotham. It's more stone than glass, we see it more at night, and it's got more atmosphere.
  • Joseph Gordon-Levitt is awesome.
  • The music is incredible.
  • The shot of GCPD running in the tunnels to the sound of the national anthem evokes a lot of 9/11 emotion in me.
  • This really is such a great Bruce Wayne story. He's the heart of this film. I love it. Likely my favourite characterization of Bruce on film.
  • The finale from Bane/Batman's fight, to the chase through the city with Batman/Catwoman versus Talia Al Ghul - is freaking thrilling.
  • "No, I'm not afraid. I'm angry." - Love that line and delivery.
  • This is more of a sequel to Begins. Am I alone on that?
  • Bruce's triumphant climb is one of the best moments in the whole series. It's so damn perfect.
  • I love the courtroom scenes. Very comic-book Batman stuff.
  • Winter Batman stories/scenes rock.

Just leaving this here to make us all feel old. Good old Nokia flip phones...

This is one of those things where in the moment it feels so new, and yet 15 years later, you can feel it was part of a whole different era. Good times!
