They aren't.

Well, I've got nothing else. It seems more than a reasonable explanation to me, but if you don't think so, I really don't have anything else.

well honestly, I think the reason why Ps4 isn't doing as well as the wii u is because a lot of japanese gamers were turned off when it was announced that the Ps4 wouldn't launch in japan until march of this year, whereas it launched way ahead of time here in the west.

what reasonable explanation is there that sony & microsoft will have to go through the same processes to launch their console in unspecified regions and sony has done so in most but microsoft is holding back for almost a year?

No, that's not it. Like I said, the Wii U isn't doing well over there, either. Home consoles have just not being doing well in the last few years in the country, and the launch of the PS4 was just confirmation, more than anything, that the market for them is vanishing. It'll be a well documented situation in Japan for quite some time.

I just gave you one, but I like I said, it doesn't seem to be one you like, so I've got nothing else.

I know it isn't the whole story but it definitely had something to do with it

i'm well aware consoles are dying there, which is unfortunate, but maybe... something could happen to turn things around.

I guess all I can say is thanks for trying.

I think one reason the PS4 isn't selling that well in Japan is because there's a lack of "Japan-centric" games.

I wonder are Japanese gamers playing less games overall now or playing other types of games, pc mobile TV or whatever. They seemed like one of the most hardcore countries for gaming so it seems very strange, unless they are just playing old gen machines to death. I have a Japanese 360 and it was really fun playing co-op or multiplayer with them (before it died out totally) as they played completely differently, worse at some aspects and unbelievable at others.

the shift to mobile gaming prob has something to do with it.

sony is the one risking losing sales, seeing as how the halo collection is coming out and there's nothing AAA coming out on ps4 to compete with it.

true. Sony doesn't really have an AAA title coming out this holiday to compete with the Halo Collection.

Halo should boost X1 sales. but, will it be enough for the X1 to overtake the PS4? we'll have to wait and see.

if Sunset Overdrive, the new bundles, and the Halo Collection fail to significantly ignite X1 sales, though, then MS is in much deeper trouble.

Like Tron just got finished saying, theres multiple reasons. Taxes. Legislation. Retailer contracts, etc. PICK ONE and your question is answered.

I read some interesting stuff on the original Xbox's launch. Apparently it was pretty... rough.

The Japanese thought it was fugly (which it was). The original controller was way too big for Japanese hands.

Also, PC gaming has never been a big thing in Japan, so, that didn't help.

But really, given Japan's strong home console market, it wasn't going to be easy for an outsider to make it big. Japan mainly got a foothold in the West, because American companies just kept crapping out terrible, derivative games.

Though I was surprised to learn that the Xbox, and all its successors, including the Xbone, are actually very fairly priced in Japan. Better than in Europe, anyway.

There's a preference for buying from home companies like Nintendo and Sony I believe too. While US consumers seem to be even a little wary at times of many their own biggest companies rather than outright supportive.

There was also a major issue of getting Japanese companies onboard. A lot of them did not want to alienate Sony.

The 360 benefited from relations established with the original Xbox, but it didn't do great either. Still, they had something to show for their efforts.

JRPG fans will notice that the 360 got some exclusives, including Tales of Vesperia, Infinite Undiscovery, Last Remnant and Lost Odyssey. Though Vesperia was a timed exclusive in Japan.

I actually think the Xbone's region freeness would make it mildly more appealing than its predecessors.

everybody is doubting it but I firmly believe that these bundles and late this year the halo collection will be enough to overtake the Ps4.

I don't think so, but they will close the gap. Don't forget that Sony has the Destiny bundle coming out next month. That alone will move as much as the Call of Duty bundle.

it does make you wonder why Sony didn't have an AAA title ready to go this Holiday for the PS4..........

Dude that is ridiculous! The ps4 has a 5 million unit lead on the X1 and much better press. I'm sorry, but a few bundles and a rerelease of a decade old game is in NO way going to give the X1 a 5 million unit boost.

Because they aren't ready? Its best they hold off till they can release a game in its best shape then rush their studios to put one out. The fact that they are leading in sales probably made them more comfortable about making that decision. Presumably The Order 1886 could have been that game but its not ready. Guerilla and Sucker Punch both just released games in less than a year so they wouldn't have had time to have anything. ND is still busy at UC4 which isn't expected for at least a year. Who knows what the hell Santa Monica is up to

I think they felt that they didn't need it.

They did have a head start on Microsoft with Infamous, Last of Us, and Killzone.

And Knack... I guess.

I think they're pushing their 3rd party games, like Destiny.

yeah........they're probably banking on Destiny and the other 3rd party titles coming out later to sell better on the PS4.

if this were Halo 5 coming out, a true new gen Halo game, then it might be a different story.

but anyways......this Holiday season will be very important for the X1. it's now on pretty much equal footing with the PS4, so you can't use the price difference as an excuse anymore.

The X1 ( both in hardware and software sales ) has to have a solid showing and make a good dent in Sony's lead. If they can do that, then that will offer good momentum going into next year.

However, if that doesn't happen, if Sony still has a good lead both in hardware and software sales, then that's not a good sign for MS. that means they really did screw themselves over with the initial announcement/launch and may never fully recover, no matter how much they improve.

I could actually see the Xbone hitting 10 million by January first given Microsoft's aggressive marketing strategy. Problem is the PS4 will also sell a few million units.

For the record, I do think Sony has gotten complacent.

Microsoft has finally picked up the ball.

I think even that's a stretch but yea, say they do those numbers, it's not like Sonys machine will stand still. It's gonna be a hot item this holiday as well and the difference this year is they'll be easy to get a hold of.

It's optimistic, but certainly not impossible.

If Microsoft unveils a 400 dollar Halo Collection bundle in time for Christmas, count on it.

I think they really missed an opportunity with not doing a Destiny bundle. But I am guessing Bungie deliberately snubbed them.

oh, I agree with that, too. just look at the way each company announces new features and updates.
