I'm in the city and using ATT. I'm on their "max" plan.

If you can switch I'd definitely recommend it. 12mbps is what my Mom gets and she lives in a teeny tiny small town. There should be better plans with other companies available to you in the city.

I have no idea......lol.

but I just checked and I have the max speed plan with my internet provider - and that's 12 mbps download speed.
Hmm... sounds crap lol.

also, I've seen people on the net suggest that you change the DNS setting on the X1, like using Google's DNS setting or using an "open" DNS setting, and that can speed up downloads.

is this safe to do?
It's ok to muck about with these settings as long as you can reset to default (which I think is not too difficult on Xbox). Just to be safe write down (or screenshot/take a photo of) the old settings before you change anything.

yeah. looks like ATT has a higher "gigapower" plan that goes up to 1GBps, but naturally it's not available in my area. :o

maybe I will start shopping around.

Wow really? What company are you with? And are you in a city or a rural area? 12mbps is super slow. I'm in Phoenix and get 150mbps with Cox.

Good. I knew 12mbps was low for US. 150mbps is very nice

thanks.

I'll try the wired option, then try the DNS setting, and then shop around for a faster service.

Good luck! And meanwhile I'll be hunting down a deal for the S. So far I've only seen trade-ins for £100 value and if I don't get any better might just keep my X1 and buy the S outright.

^ great to hear!!

I take it you were able to get your free game then?

Google Fiber just needs to overtake the entire country and give us al that 1GBPS speed. Too many small fish.

Guys this new Forza game is really dope.

Everyone I know who's got it has said that. I used to love Forza games but haven't played one in a while.

Anyone having issues with the Quick Reaume feature? Every game I have crashes upon entering the game after booting up my X1 from sleep mode.

is it safe to constantly leave the X1 in Instant On mode, and frequently wake it from Instant On and then put it back to sleep?

and, is it safe to constantly leave an external drive attached to the X1, that's kept on during Instant On to constantly download updates and stuff?

I'm using a 2TB external drive as my main drive and I'm downloading everything onto that.

I'm a bit concerned I will wear the drive down if it's constantly on and connected to the X1 during Instant On.

I haven't tried it out with any games yet, but so far I've been able to "quick resume" apps like the My Games app without any problem coming out of Instant On.

Yea it's safe. I keep my system in that state 24/7 and I'm using an external HDD as well. The only time I'll do a full power down is if I'm going out of town or something. Other than that though, I leave it in Instant On mode.

ah, good to hear. thanks, Pat!

the nice thing about using an external drive is that when it comes time to upgrade to the Scorpio, I won't have to redownload all this stuff again. of course, that's assuming Scorpio will work with external drives and will accept X1 formatted external drives ( would suck if the Scorpio had to reformat the drive and thus wipe out all of your data ).

There's no reason to think it wouldn't be compatible with the external HDD. I'd be boned if it doesnt tho. I'm using a 4TB HDD and Iv got ALL of my Xbox related stuff saved to it.

Good plan. It would be outright stupid for the Scorpio not to support the same stuff, especially being in the same gen as X1 and S. Not everyone has unlimited downloads per month so imagine redownloading everything again!

So you're thinking of upgrading to Scorpio one day? (I know you didn't want to get it at launch after getting the S).

Haha similar situation to me.

oh, yeah. I'm going to be upgrading to the Scorpio. I just don't think I will be doing it next year when it launches. I'm going to at least wait until the 2 year warranty on my S runs out in 2018 and then see how much the Scorpio costs then, how much I can trade in my S for, etc.

Of course, I also want to make sure the Scorpio has all the features I want ( 4k player, browsing capability with Edge, all-in-one media machine, etc. ).

Also, speaking of external drives, this may sound like a silly noob question.

But, would it be ok to put a little piece of tape on the "activity" light on the back of my drive?

That light constantly blinks when it's plugged into the S - whether it's on stand by or in use. And quite frankly, that blinking blue light is annoying at night, in a dark room, when I'm trying to sleep.......lol.

So, I was thinking of just sticking a piece of electric tape or something to cover that light up.

Would that be safe to do? Just a bit concerned that the constant use of the drive will make it hot which would melt the tape.

Should I be concerned by that or no?

I was also thinking of putting a piece of tape or label on top of the drive to label/name the drive should I ever get another drive for additional storage.

Cool, actually I think you said that before and I forgot the specifics. Makes sense.

Should have everything the S has. Would be a brainless move to strip anything out and force people to make a choice. Better to make everything either the same or better.

I don't think melting tape would necessarily matter but you could monitor how hot your drive gets. Not a stupid question as there's risk of fire when you do these things wrong. I cover lights like that with other stuff when I want to sleep too.

thanks, man!

but you never know with the Scorpio. look at the Pro. I don't think any of us thought that Sony wouldn't include a 4K player in their 4K-geared machine. Well.......we know what happened there........

Even with the PS4 and X1. Both lacked features their predecessors had ( like being able to store media files directly to the hard drive ). The PS4 can't even play audio cds and it still won't let you use a custom background of your own choice.

So, you never know with these new consoles. I agree it's always better to add to and make better. but often they do remove features.

and yeah. that light is annoying as ****. I'll try searching online to see if there's a way to turn it off first.
