Luthor is only lame if one thinks criminal masterminds are. That being said, there are a lot of grander threats than Lex.

Only if said criminal masterminds are dealing with regular folks... when you're dealing with superman, there's no where to hide, no plans you can keep secret, and you can be easily dispatched to the deepest dungeon.. end of story... and of course, the only way they can keep Lex in the game is keep him shuffing kryptonite into Superman's face.. done that a billion times... bored to death... plus not to mention, it's a cop out...

Luthor could be great, but only if there is a great threat, I am kinda tired of the luthor and kryptonite scheme and really don't want them to go that route for MOS2. Wouldn't hate it, but just would prefer a villian we have not seen in a Superman Movie.

Exactly!!!

I don't believe this is a spoiler, but I will tag it just in case some have avoided the nokia trailer:

When he says: [BLACKOUT]"And it hurts, doesn't it?"[/BLACKOUT]

I am so reminded of him [BLACKOUT]talking to Darkseid in JL when he said "but you can take it, can't you big boy?"[/BLACKOUT]

That reminds me of the Hertz Donut joke in The American Astronaut. Look it up on youtube. It's worth it, trust me. :woot:

Yeah, I've never been a big fan of Lex becoming president. I like him better as a ruthless corporate leader.

Yeah. Though I wouldn't mind if he were a supporting character who becomes villainous at the end of MOS3. I liked the "We're destined to do this forever" bit in TDK. I'd want something similar to Lex, and leave it that way.

Comics are always open ended. If the trilogy ends with Lex coming forth against Superman, it can just be an implicit ongoing saga within the world MOS, with the major threats out of the way. A part of me wishes that this approach happens ;)

Pretty surprised at the comments about Lex being a lame villain for Superman.

Lex Luthor is Superman's antithesis. As Superman represents the best of humanity, Lex represents the worst. Superman uses his abilities to save people and guide them. Lex uses his talents to assert his superiority over people.

In fact, I would say Lex is the kind of person Superman wishes he could save. Lex has so much potential as a human being. Brilliant, innovative. He could do great things for the world and be a shining example, but he's all about himself, even when appearing to be altruistic. One of the best moments of their rivalry is in All-Star Superman, when Lex claimed he could've saved the world and helped it if not for Superman. Supes' response? "If you really cared about the world, you would've done that a long time ago."

Lex can offer Superman mental challenges, cause him to question himself, even give Superman physical challenges in the form of the machinations he can concoct. As mentioned, he's brilliant, one of the top smartest men in the world and manipulative, ruthless. He's given the Justice League issues, in comics and in animated form.

How would they put him on screen after Man of Steel? I don't know, but it would be a great change up, as I wouldn't want them to run another invasion type storyline. But there's plenty of potential in using Lex.

Perfectly stated. I agree with all of that. So much potential for Lex.

Yes.

I think the change-up might be necessary after this film. Trying to one-up MOS by throwing an even crazier and more action-focused villain at the screen doesn't sound like a wise idea, IMO. Lex is brilliant because he can circumvent Superman's physical prowess. That's what I'd like to see for a sequel, especially if we want to see Supes further develop as a character.

Lex would be an almost perfect villain for the next one. It would lead to a lot more development for all characters if done right. I think another alien invasion would be way to similar.

It's also similar to a line thats in
superman unbound. He has Brainiac beaten on Earth, and Brainiac starts to see and hear everything around him for miles. It hurts him and he freaks out. Superman tells him with a smirk, its something, aint it.

^ I think having Lex can allow a nice spacing out of events that I don't see bigger foes allowing for. TDK's crazy narrative worked because it was a semi stand alone story. I don't want MOS to be like TDK, even if that kind of structuring of plots worked for Skyfall. If anything, I want MOS2 to be more like Spider-Man 2, developing how Superman adapts to his new job with The Daily Planet and how he balances his new life around.

I want the villain to play a supporting role, and not dominate the movie. MOS3 is where I want the villain to CARRY the movie, because the audience should have already attached to the characters for two movies. And I want that villain to be an epic, out of this world villlain.

But he should have a killer henchman.

Exactly this. There needs to be downtime in MoS 2 where the world gets used to Superman (and he to what his role is now).

I would kinda like to see Lex be responsible for most of supes rogues in the MoS universe. Metallo, parasite, Bizarro, Doomsday, etc.
It would be One failure after another in trying to beat superman.

Good call! I love it when [BLACKOUT]he just kind of realizes someone is dealing with what he deals with all the time and can't handle it[/BLACKOUT]. Your [BLACKOUT]example and the Darkseid example[/BLACKOUT] are just perfect.

^ I want Lex to be INVOLVED with said supervillains. But I don't think he should create them, unless they are earth-technology based. I think Parasite should be an experiment of genetic engineering, but Doomsday should be unknown and alien. It's scarier that way.

As for Bizzaro, I think they should give him a tragic element.

yeah, oddly enough I was watching it when I read your post and saw him say that line. I was like, whoa, weird..Otherwise, I wouldnt even have remembered it.
Glitch in the matrix? lol.

Really, the Zod storyline opens the door for Lex to come in. He could capitalize on some of the public's xenophobia of aliens. The military could hire him to help them create weapons against a potential alien invasion.

Lex is the kind of man that would take advantage of Superman's abilities and use them against him. Use the fact that Superman has super-hearing and put the Man of Steel on a wild goose chase when there's no danger around.

Superman is so rarely condescending, so on the occasions where it does happen, I just love it; when he just gets that little smirk and says something you'd never expect him to say because it's not in his nature. Kind of like the oft occasion [BLACKOUT]where Superman and Batman are about to throw down and he is just like (paraphrasing) "Bruce, don't do this, you know better. Don't make me..."[/BLACKOUT]

Exactly. Luthor shouldn't be trying to destroy Metropolis or enslave humanity, but to discredit Superman and expand his own empire.

It's funny, but I'd like to see Lex in the Suit vs Batman in World's Finest. I think it would be an interesting subversion of expectations :)

I'm glad that in BB (and apparently in MOS) we get to see the grown up hero early on.

Agreed. I don't mind seeing the origin story again, but for Superman I don't think it's really necessary to follow it in a completely linear fashion.

Using the same flashback structure as BB and allowing us to see a grown up Clark early on is exactly what I was hoping they would do, so I have no problem there.

Which again reminds me of [BLACKOUT]the Darkseid episode of JL, so now instead of him I'm picturing Lex saying something to Batman after kicking his ass like "you can't win, yet you still try", and BAM Supes swoops in to start wrecking ****.[/BLACKOUT]

I would absolutely approve of said scenario :yay:

But that kind of drama have been so overdone in almost every other tv show we see... including in superman.

Lex would have made a great Batman villian...

^ " Lex could have been a great Batman villain"

Which is WHY I want Lex in MOS2 to get relatively little screen-time, with the powerful henchman doing villainous things sporadically, with the rest of the narrative being character driven. By putting Lex up against Batman in the sequel, his ability to be dangerous stands out, while Superman gets to fight a bigger intergalactic foe.

I don't want Lex in the mechanized suit for MOS2. I want Superman to be saving Lex from his disgruntled henchmen, and there to be an enchange of words, not blows for Superman and Luthor.

I hate getting ahead of myself but I think Luthor is all but confirmed but the sequel. The Lexcorp tower + Snyder acknowledging that he exists in this world + him being Superman's most famous villan= pretty safe bet. And that excites me.

As fun as Gene Hackman and Kevin Spacey were, we just haven't seen the modern Lex. And the fact that there's already a Lexcorp in this universe immediately tells us that this version would be the modern Lex Luthor (not that it's any surprise).
