So if it's too funny it's campy, and if it's not funny enough it's humorless. Yeah.

I kinda' agree with the humorless part, but Cavill manages to sneak some "winks" in, but in a non-cheesy way. It just makes him more relatable.

How funny is the Superman world really though? All the jokes come from people reacting to him and his sometimes "aw, it's nothing" responses to mundane stuff to him that is shocking to us.

i dont even understand IndieWires description, they wanted a blockbuster superman movie but got a modern blockbuster and thats why they dont like it?

Ign gave it a 9/10, they said they didnt give it a 10 because clark was too serious

SlashFilm - "a super film that delivers on all levels"

Indiewires review is a negative on RT he gave it a C+ and yet on metacritic it is a 58/100. Yeah that makes me confused

None of the negative reviews really bothered me so far. Seems more like a taste issue than the movie actually being badly made, and they definitely seem like the minority opinion so far.

I did listen to the IGN review. They said Superman himself was humorless.
I've never thought of Supes as being the levity within his own stories. But my favorite versions of the character so far are 'The Animated Series' & 'JLU'. He was pretty serious.

In terms of comparing the two ratings, anything under 60 on RottenTomatoes is "rotten". That's why 3/5 can go either way.

So The Playlist and IndieWire have different reviews. Playlist positive, IndieWire mixed/negative

I posted this in the other thread, and I dunno if people like David Faraci here or not, but his review is really good and down to earth.

Whatever problems Man of Steel has - and it has enough to keep it from being a cohesively great movie - it has enough good to make it a must-see. Like I said up top, a couple of thousand words ago, this is the Superman movie we’ve been waiting to see. The fact that it leaves room for improvement only makes me more excited for the next one.

i can understand why they took a more serious role for this movie... i mean, look at Lester's Superman II, III, and... well, we all know about IV...

Eric Kohn 58 While certainly the most dazzling Superman movie to hit the big screen, the 143-minute Man of Steel is also the longest, and it only justifies that heft because it leaves room to keep the effects coming.
Superman Returns was 154 minutes...Superman The Movie was also 143 minutes.

I saw Superman I and II in the theater. Didn't even bother with the other two until they were on cable. I loved the first two movies, so seeing that franchise fall was just sad...

yep, and lots of action with a solid story is WHAT I WANT from Superman. This isn't Ironman3 or Avengers guys, were every 10 seconds there is a Joke. I personally am not a fan of that method.

we are at 89% so far, id imagine it'll remain in the 80%s

i like the first two as well (i personally the Restored International Cut of Superman II, but thats just me)... just happy that they're giving the attention Superman deserves, and from the sound of it, it's really paying off

What? a critic not doing homework? Maybe he tried to forget SR all together? At least he kinda liked it I guess

Me too. I was only 4 when my dad took me to see the first Superman movie (he bought me a program at the movie theater, which I have since lost), and I thought the movie was amazing. And I love the original Superman II...I was 6, and I remember all of the kids in our row cheered at, "General, would you care to step outside?"

After that, it all went downhill. Superman is long overdue for a good film.

RT's percentages make no sense. 10 reviews in, 9 good 1 bad, yet its at 89%?????

My father told me he saw Superman 3 in a crowded theatre when it opened in 1983 and everyone walked out discussing things along the lines of "WTF Was that" LOL..

I agree here. It's not knock on that style though. It just isn't my preference. I want a superhero movie that takes itself seriously. The comics have been doing it for decades.
Though it is nice to have some of the Marvel movies for a change of pace.
