What is all this lack of character development talk?

You have to remember they made this film with the hope of making sequels. A lot of character development/relationships would take place in the 2nd film when Clark is working at the Daily Planet. The first film is about Clark coming to terms with his powers and responsibilities. There is only so much you can cram into one film. People expect it all in these days.

I was just offering a contrasting opinion to what was quoted from Roeper. Both me and my friend that attended really bought into the story and the development of Krypton. And when the action did arrive, on a scale never seen in a Superman film, it was glorious.
I probably misunderstood your intent then. It's pretty late here so I blame that. I'm not much of a Superman fan but I keep hope that this movie will change that a bit. I think we people that hang around on a forum like this are a bit more likely to enjoy it than the average person as well (disregarding purists and such of course).

It would be hilarious if Man of Steel manages worse reviews than Returns.

You act as if SR was reviewed poorly. It was quite solid in its reviews. It's obviously a polarizing film between the critics and fans.

As for Nolan, he comes across as a strong filmmaker, but not one who really revels in the genre.

I feel that Nolan's better at handling scripts, while Snyder's better at handling spectacle. I just wanted a Batman Begins-quality script. :/

Thing is, I dont feel that to be true at all anymore. The Nolan of 10 years ago, yes, but.....

In his quest for larger immense scope, Nolan has lost something in his film making.... how to make a film work as a cohesive story.

Inception and TDKR, IMHO completely fail from a narrative and storytelling point of view.

Im waiting for James Bs review.

if you guys go through the "rotten" reviews, they're not bad at all. Granted, there are a few 2/5's, but a majority I'm seeing are 3/5. I don't know how a "B-" equals to "rotten" when there was another "B-" and it was "fresh". It seems very skewed and doesn't make sense.

lolno

There's also a negative EW review out there. Though it's not Owen Gleiberman, which I found disappointing.

Yeah, it used to be Owen and Lisa. Lisa just left the magazine, thankfully. She was famous for giving one or two of the Twilight movies A's, while being tougher on movies that are actually...good.

Owen is probably my most trustworthy reviewer. This dude Chris who replaced Lisa is a tool.

It almost doesn't matter what the final rt score will be. All the "big name" critics from what i've seen so far seem to have already cast their verdict about the film.

I'm still waiting for one very postive review from one of the well known respected critics? anyone seen one so far?

This is a very odd feeling. "All" these negatives reviews, combined with half the forum's head exploding; yet I am still not returning my tickets, still can't wait, still haven't anticipated a movie in my life like I have this one, still expect to be mind-blown, and still hear nothing but noise until I see it myself.

What is this....... "rational thinking" I seem to be experiencing?

I hope I haven't caught something.

:cwink:

Ive never understood why Roeper was given much credit as a reviewer, he was a columnist that watched a lot of movies until Gene Siskel passed and they started having people fill in. He made entertaining TV, but while I liked his columns I've never cared for his reviews.

Honestly, I don't care what the critics say. I'm there on Friday and I'll judge for myself. Why get all worked up over an RT score when most of them are jaded wannabe film makers anyway?

I'm not acting like anything, just making a humourous observation. Lighten up.

just went up to 71%!!!!!!!!!! Looks like there is light at the end of the tunnel!

Well I realize this isn't what everyone had hoped but it is what it is. I normally agree with Roeper, and usually breath a sigh of relief when he gives a positive review. Now I disagreed with him on Captain America, so there's always hope. However what I'm more worried about is that what he wrote in his review is what I feared about the film going in. This film not only seemed like it was Rebooting Superman, but rebooting Superman 1 and 2. I never liked that Zod was chosen as the villain, I'd hoped that they'd go the Batman Begins route and have a villain that hadn't been previously used and focused more on Clark, and less on the villain, but instead Goyer, Snyder, Nolan, or whoever decided it was more important to go into the backstory of Zod and flesh him out. Honestly I could care less about Zod, there are way better Superman villains.

Now I haven't seen the film, so it's not fair for me to write a moratorium until I've seen it myself. But I am concerned for the negativity. But when so many people prop this stuff up like it's Cecil B. Demille's 10 Commandments, I have to put on the brakes and let people know this is a story about a guy who runs around in tights.

I've been reading through some of the critic "rotten" scores and some of the things they speak absolute make no sense whatsoever. Most of them try to be as clever as possible and confusingly spring together the best sounding word combinations, but the feel to most of these reviews just seem like most of these people critique their words thoroughly to keep a job other than the actual movie itself because this passage right here makes no sense AT ALL:

The movie can't decide if it wants to be a particularly thoughtful brand of superhero saga or a deafeningly generic summer action movie. So it ends up being both, to the detriment of it and us.

So in a nutshell, we get both a thoughtful superhero saga and loud action. Therefore, making it a bad mixture in whatever they expected to see. HUH?!?!? Lmao. I'll be my OWN critic. Most of these reviewers, good and bad, are so full of **** it isn't even funny....:word:

This kind of parallels Watchmen in the sense that critics tend to be rather harsh on it, while bloggers tend to be more soft on it. Though I don't think it will be as divisive as the 2009 film. I think most of the GA will be satisfied, and that's what really matters.
