A) As a movie, MoS is excellent.

B) It is not straight up comic and neither were Nolan's Batman films. And last time I checked, those movies did pretty well financially and critically.

A) That is your opinion. It is not fact.

B) That makes no sense

David Edelstein's negative review on RT just got counted twice, because his review was posted on two different sites. He's a top critic too. Wtf? They need to correct that.
Edelstein likes to troll comic book fans. He did it on purpose.

A very close buddy of mine whose opinion I hold in VERY high regard:

HOLY CRAP!!!
Yes.....I've just seen Man of Steel....there are no words for how AWESOME it was!!!
Spoiler and non spoiler review to follow when I get home :-)

Seriously...movie of the decade!!!

Not worried in the slightest for my own personal conclusion:word:

I honestly think those films especially the "classics" wouldn't be able to bear the level of criticism or critical standards a film like faces today. All this talk of character development...

With the type of logic that allows for magical kisses over and over and time warps by way of flight, bringing people back from the dead...

And all this talk of Shannon not living up to the hype, if we had a corny lex(and I'm talking spacey here) running around in this post 2012 cinema landscape.

Let's be serious here friends.

LOL... you have a point.. i don't think any of the dated Superman movies will stand up to today's critics...

But we'll have to judge MOS by today's film-making standards too... if it's getting so much (35% is quite a large number) consensus on why it's failing, then there is something wrong with it whether we like it or not based on today's movie making standards...

So, they're counting B-, 3/5 reviews as rotten, and now they're counting rotten reviews twice?

wow

Its very serious. BB/TDK serious except a helluva lot more action and if you are TRULY a Superman fan, you will love MoS. The GA will go crazy for the action alone.

To me it seemed pretty obvious from the trailers that this would be a very serious and heavy Superman movie with not a lot of laughs in it.

Is the tone of the movie really that far off from the trailers? Or is just a case of what works in a 3 minute trailer doesn't work as well stretched across 2 1/2 hours?

Do I prefer them? Yes. Do I think they are great movies? No.

I reviewed this film without comparing it to previous ones. And I felt it doesn't stand up on its own merit.

Then you prefer campy and dull movies, which is ok, to each its own. :word:

Let me ask this without spoilers...from those that have seen it, will kids like it? That's a major demographic Hollywood tries to hit during the summer.

It makes very much sense. Considering the fact that many who were involved with delivering Nolan's Batman is a part of MoS. You're just ranting, downplaying everything at this point which is fine but there is no need to do it with a boorish attitude.

It might... if you drag those kind of heaviness without breaks of levity for 2 1/2 hours, it might be depressing...

wow

RT's really seem to have it all together! Way too much emphasis on the critical side of things and not enough open interpretation on how you the viewer is going to react.

Yes, I absolutely love campy and dull movies. That's exactly what I said. Absolutely. You see right through these boards and into my very soul.

YES! I would like to know that too.. because my 2nd outing, I planned to bring my nieces and nephews...

I wouldn't take my kids to see it. they're 9 and 6.

Horseplay? I must have missed the scene where Zod and Superman decided to fight in Metropolis for the heck of it. And here I thought Superman was trying to stop the main villain from killing all of humanity.

Ozymandias meet parody, parody, Ozymandias. The man who destroyed the real city of NYC in the 80's with a space octopus alien.
Stop killing comedians with your seriousness!

Yeah, kids will like it as long as they can follow the basic plot. Kids love people punching stuff.

Too violent, or too boring (I mean for kids)?

Too boring and confusing with the non-linear storytelling. Which sucks because my daughter (9) loves Nolan's Batman movies.

Thank you. Thought I was going nuts for a second.

You're taking my comparison and dumbing it down to bad guys and good guys when that's not what I'm trying to point out at all.

It's about the consequences of both endings, how both didn't address those consequences very well, and how Star Wars waited until Empire Strikes Back to show the real severity of the situation. Which Man of Steel could easily do as well.

Frankly, I didn't need to see multiple scenes addressing the devastation as part of the closing. Seeing Superman's reaction to what he had to do in order to save the day was enough for me.

Criticize the camp all you want, sure it wouldn't date so well to today's cinema. But the story and characters were well developed and struck the perfect tone. That's where MOS seems to be missing with the critics.

I would rather watch donner's movie which executes the characters and story awesomely, even with its camp, over a superman movie that doesn't get the characters right and is bloated with overtly serious tones.

Now getting a 57 on Metacritic. Near other cbms such as Incredible Hulk (61), Iron Man 2 (57), X-Men: The Last Stand (58), Spider-man 3 (59), and Batman Forever (52).

I liked Man of Steel better than all those movies, but man some critics are tossing this film to the curb.

Its actually very simple:

When bad guys die en masse it's ok

When good guys/innocents die en masse you've got some 'splainin to do
